What’s In A Wedding Ring? Golden Doesn’t Mean Just Golden Any More

ourteen countries, 19 public transportation systems, two pagan rituals and one volcano later, the Kleszczewskis are back home to Oneonta. “It’s not enough to talk about the world,” said dad Mark. “We wanted to live in it.” The family – Mark, mom Ewa, and sons Eric and Michael – took “a year of plenty,” visiting family in Poland, that turned into two years of criss-crossing Europe. Since they all have dual citizenship – U.S. With Bobbies in and European London. Union – that simplified travel through Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and points in between. At first, the parents planned to homeschool their sons, who were in middle school at the time. But European rules required Eric and Michael be enrolled in public school, where they experience not only a different curriculum, but a whole new way of learning Please See EUROPE, B3

Ring Choices Among Offerings At Foothills First-Of-Year Wedding Show RINGS/From B1 girl’s best friend. “They’re still the most popular,” said Liz Pereira of Wolfe Wilde Jewelers in Clinton Plaza. Becky Davidson-Nielsen of Davidson’s Jewelry deals exclusively in estate jewelry and says she’s seen couples coming in looking for traditional, antique pieces. “People really enjoy vintage jewelry,” she said. Brides are pondering these kinds of issues as the traditional opening of the 2013 bridal season comes with the first fair of the year, the fifth annual Bridal Expo noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Ian Austin/ OTSEGO.life Foothills Performing Arts Center. Wolf Wilde’s Liz Pereira Over at Teleky, Potter expressed similar sentiholds a halo-styled ments to Pereira. wedding ring, a popuWhite, it would seem, is the new color. “It’s lar choice these days.

all white gold,” said Potter. “Occasionally, we do still sell a yellow gold band, but it’s mostly white.” White gold, which is a mixture of yellow gold and nickel, is stronger than yellow gold. “Platinum was popular, but it costs more,” said Potter. “And the price of gold has gone up so high, so people started going with white gold.” The strength of white gold has always been popular, often used in yellow gold rings to hold the stone in place. Over at Wolfe Wilde, Pereira is seeing a new trend towards rose gold, gold with a higher copper alloy that gives it a distinct pinkish hue. “It’s really becoming more popular,” she said. And for the men, the trend is picking up towards “alternative metals” such as titanium

and carbide for their wedding bands. “They’re much more strong and durable,” said Potter. “It’s extremely tough.” And while matching bride-and-groom wedding rings are a growing trend, many high-end engagement rings now come with a matching wedding band that locks into place next to the ring itself, which helps prevent damage to both rings. “They can rub up against each other and weaken the metal,” said Pereira. Now armed with the latest trends, the onus of picking out a ring no longer falls solely on the man. Often, the bride-to-be will help customdesign her ring. “It will be unique to them,” said Pereira. “It will suit their specific needs and wants.”

Skype Kept Traveling Boys In Touch With Home EUROPE/From B1 “It’s a lot of memorizing,” said Eric, now an Oneonta High School sophomore. “Chemistry was just reading, no experiments. They have different ways of doing math: I did a proportion on the board and even though I got the answer right, I got a zero because it

wasn’t their method.” He even got points off on an English test – it was based on the British spellings. And teaching methods weren’t the only culture shock. “It’s a lot of forced manners,” said Eric. “When the teacher walks in, you have to stand up and say

hello. If you don’t, you get detention.” All this, and in Polish too. “Mark tried to teach them the American way with youtube videos and online materials,” Ewa said. “I told him, ‘I am taking over the learning’!” But the boys took a challenge and turned it into an opportunity. Michael practiced his art and won a place in the “Laureate Circle” of the “Doodle for Google” contest, and his piece was displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Warsaw. Eric participated in a local Olympics and took home medals for high jump and javelin. The family got to take part in a record-setting coloring contest, coloring the world’s longest paper dragon – 12,000 meters. Part of the learning experience was to be open to local culture, not just the tourist traps. “We were interested in things that were commonplace to them,” said Mark. Food, in particular, was one of the best ways they found to experience other countries. In Barcelona, the boys got to eat Dragonfruit, which is sold at many open-air marketplaces with a small spoon for immediate consumption.

“It’s a riot of colors and tastes,” said Mark. “We found this interesting vegetable in Italy,” said Eric. “We called it a ‘zumato’ because it tasted like a tomato, but it looked like a zucchini.” While they usually used their E-U status to connect with people, being a tourist came in handy when it came time to smuggle to zumato into the Vatican Museum. “It was sticking out of my backpack and security didn’t know what to make of it,” said Mark. “We told them we were just American tourists and they just let us go through.” Also in their travel bags was their GPS, with hopes that it would help them better navigate their travels, but it almost made things worse. “It tried to take us into the canals in Venice!” said Michael. “It was blank in Croatia,” added Ewa. “There were roads that were so new, they were still steaming.” Even abroad, the boys made a point to stay in touch with friends from home via Skype and Facebook. “Michael made friends he hadn’t even met yet,” said Mark. “We really got to be part of that global village.” “Once we came back,

The Kleszczewski family display mementos of their two years abroad. Mom Eva holds a book of French cooking. Eric wears medals from sporting competitions and holds a volcanic rock from Mount Vesuvius. they didn’t feel lonely, even though they’d been gone for two years,” Ewa added. Eric skypes daily with Polish friends, and introduced many of them to his friends in Oneonta. “We play video games together,” he said. Though the family obtained “five secret family recipes” and created one of their own, in two years none of them ate a “real hamburg-

er.” “I missed American comfort foods like pizza and Chinese food,” said Mark. “It’s good, but it’s not the same over there.” But no matter how far they roamed – even when they were in Rome – it was still good to come home to Otsego County. “It wasn’t until we left that we really began to appreciate the beauty of this place,” the father said.

IN MEMORIAM Edi Hofbauer, 75; Ran Alpine Ski Hut 45 Years ONEONTA – Eduard Hofbauer, 75, who with wife Ingrid ran the Alpine Ski Hut in downtown Oneonta for 45 years, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Bassett Hospital. Edi was born on Aug. 28, 1937 in Munich, Germany, the son of the late Anna Hofbauer. One of Edi’s dreams was to become a U.S. citizen; while he was still a teenager, an uncle sponsored him to come to the United States. He spoke little English and had a trade school education. For his short period of time living in New York City he played water polo for the New York Athletic Club. He joined the Army and became a citizen while serving at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii, in 1959-63. There he met his wife, Ingrid, whom he married in East Orange, N.J., in

Shannon Service ONEONTA – A service to celebrate the life of Collette Shannon, 83, who passed away on Dec. 1, 2012, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, pastor, officiating. Condolences to the family may be made online by visiting our website at www. grummonsfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

1964. In East Orange, Edi learned the skiequipment business in a ski shop with friend, Warner Eduard Seher, and Hofbauer became the first Puma representative in the U.S. A friend, Herb Trappenburg of Stamford, helped him plan the opening of the Alpine Ski Hut, and he settled in Oneonta and raised his family here. The Hofbauers eventually expanded the business into a sporting goods store, selling skis, bikes, and other athletic equipment, and Edi prided himself on the service he gave customers. When the new city manager, Mike Long, was about to attend his first Common Council meeting

in September, Mayor Dick Miller noticed that afternoon that Long’s desk in Council Chambers lacked the engraved nameplate that everyone else had. Miller “called Edi, and it was delivered an hour later. He was old school, taking care of his customers.” “He loved Oneonta,” said the mayor. “He loved his family. And we all loved him back. He was past president of Oneonta Rotary, receiving a Paul Harris Award. He served on the boards of the Family Y, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society, Oneonta Country Club and the county Youth Bureau. He was a member of the Eastern Winter Sports Representatives Association and the Elks. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Monika Hofbauer-Baldwin and husband

Perry Baldwin of Orlando, Fla., and Heidi HofbauerBuzzy and husband Brett Buzzy of Oneonta, and grandchildren Mickaela, Anika, Dakoda and Nikoala Buzzy, and Jenna and Serena Baldwin. Calling hours were planned 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. The funeral was to be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Teressa Sivers, pastor, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Alpine Ski Hut Scholarship Fund, payable to the Oneonta City School District, 31 Center St., Oneonta, NY 13820; or the Oneonta Rotary Fund, for the Student Exchange Program, P.O. Box 1122, Oneonta, NY 13820. Arrangements were with the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

OBITUARIES

Sue Stevens, 94; In Navy, Contributed To War Effort Vs. Japan COOPERSTOWN — Suzanne “Sue” Stevens, 94, a charter member of Cooperstown’s VFW Post who decoded Japanese transmission during World War II service in the Navy, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. She was born Suzanne Whyte Gross in Cooperstown on May 7, 1918, and delivered by Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett at The Thanksgiving Hospital, the site of today’s Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home. In 1922, she and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lora J. Gross, left Cooperstown and moved over 20 times, returning here in 1942. Her father was one of four gentlemen who, in the early

1920s, bought the land that, when donated to the village, became Doubleday Field. As the family traveled, Sue attended 23 schools, graduating from Berkeley (Calif.) High School in 1936. She then attended The Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Chicago and Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C. In World War II, she enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at the Naval Security Station in Washington, where she received a top secret clearance and was assigned to decoding Japanese messages. In school and during the war, she had the opportunity to assist both First Ladies,

Eleanor Roosevelt and Bess Truman, in preparing Red Cross packages for servicemen overseas. On June 20, 1945, she and Cooperstownian Edward (Wad) C. Stevens, were married at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. In November 1945, following her honorable discharge, she returned to Cooperstown and worked for Aid to Dependent Children with the Welfare Office. She was a charter member of the Sergeant Walter P. Eggleston VFW Post, a 31-year volunteer at Bassett Hospital, and a volunteer with the Susquehanna SPCA

and Pegasus 4-H Club. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and was an active member of the Cooperstown Art Association. She was also a member and past president of the Criterion Club. Survivors include daughter Joni Stevens and her husband John Stevens of Williamsburg, Va.; son Tom Stevens and wife Laura of Cooperstown and Punta Gorda, Fla., daughter Brenda Ayers of Greenport, and grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. A family celebration is planned in 2013. Arrangements are with the Tillapaugh Funeral Service.
