But where do those traditions even come from? “Traditions help your wedding have a special meaning,” said Paula Fassler, owner of House of Brides on Southside Oneonta. “They help connect you to the past.” ► THE DRESS: Is there any image more iconic than the bride in her white gown, floating up the aisle on a cloud of lace and tulle? “It’s about purity,” said Fassler. “It’s the bride’s first time down the aisle, first time as a wife.” But the shades of white vary these days, from champagne to ivory, for every bride and every Symbols of purity skin tone. surround House of Please See TRADITION, B3 Brides’ Paula Fassler.

This Winter Carnival All About Chocolate CARNIVAL/From B1
Friday-Sunday, Feb. 6-8 in downtown Cooperstown. Kicking off the
event will be an “Oompa Loompa” foot race instead of the parade, where kids in crazy costumes can race down Main Street to jump into a giant pile of candy. “It’s a great way to start off the weekend and get us all moving,” she said. And for the grown-ups, they’ll have their own candy-themed fun, with a Bar Crawl featuring cocktails from Alex & Ika, Doubleday Café, The Otesaga, Mel’s at 22 and Bocca Osteria. The carnival will feature live music on Main Street,
AllOTSEGO.dining&entertainment
games and vendors, as well as the dog show, 5K race and chicken wing, chili and dessert contests. “Can’t have a candy factory themed event without desserts!” she said. Davidson is hoping to get in a few new events, including a spaghetti dinner, hosted by the Angel Network, a student cabaret, hosted by Friends of Art and Music, and a college rugby match. “A lot of people around here haven’t seen a rugby match before!” she said. The lip-synch contest, which was noticeably absent from last year’s carnival, will also return. And hopefully, Davidson said, there will be some snow so local artists can create snow sculptures along Main Street, as well as a snowman contest on Sunday morning. But with the 50th carnival just a few years away, Davidson is hoping to reinvigorate the event and draw crowds back to Cooperstown. “We’re really hoping to bring people out who haven’t been here in a few years,” she said. “And we’re making some big plans.”

right off the altar. “All the girls had to dress alike so no one would be able to tell which one was the bride,” said Norah Doyle, owner of Rainbow’s End, Oneonta. “Otherwise, she might be stolen and held for the ransom of her dowry!” ► THE FLOWERS: “Having a bouquet gives the bride something to do with her hands,” said Claire Satriano, a florist at Mohican Flowers, Cooperstown. “But roses have different meanings too – red is for love, pink is for passion, white is for purity.” Some brides put thyme in their bouquets for good luck, and Amish brides carry no flowers at all. “They put flowers all around the house and give them to the mothers, but they don’t carry flowers on their person,” she said. And, of course, there’s the bouquet toss. “It’s said that whoever catches the bouquet is the next to marry, so sometimes, you’ll see girls fight over it!” she said. ► THE VEIL: A fragile wisp of tulle over the bride’s eyes sounds lovely, but according to Doyle, it wasn’t always such a romantic tradition. “In the time of arranged marriages, the bride wore it through the entire ceremony,” she said. “So when it came time to kiss the bride, the groom got to finally see what he had paid two cows and three goats for!” ► THE CAKE: It isn’t a special occasion without cake, says Marjorie Landers, of Cakes by Marjorie, Cooperstown, and it’s tradition for the couple to save the top of the wedding cake to eat on their first anniversary. “I went to a 25th anniversary party where they took their wedding cake out of their freezer and ate it!” she said. “I heard it wasn’t very good.” But after a year, she said, the cake should still be tasty. “It’s about renewal,” she said. “I did the cakes for all my kids weddings, and they said a year later, it still tasted good.” ► THE RINGS: “A diamond is forever,” is the classic slogan for the engagement ring, but not just because it’s the hardest mineral in existence. “It’s white and clean, sparkly and fresh,” said Liz Pereira, Wolf Wilde Jewelers, Oneonta. “It’s beautiful and rare, like true love.” Even where we wear them has meaning. “On the ring finger of the left hand is a vein that travels directly to your heart,” she said. “You wear your wedding band on that finger so it’s close to your heart.”
