50th Anniversary Of Beatles On Ed Sullivan Brings Back Memories Of Still Fervent Fans BEATLES/From B1 “When Ed Sullivan came on, the whole staff came back. We might have even locked the doors! We just all had to see what this ‘Beatles’ thing was about. They played “All My Lovin’ “’Til There Was You and “She Loves You to a record 73 million viewers. “If they had played something off ‘Sergeant Pepper,’ we probably wouldn’t have liked it or remembered them, said Steve Markuson, who teaches the history of rock music at SUNY Oneonta. “But they got in, and then they could get weird. And after that night, radio was never the same. “I was working at an IBM plant in Fishkill and that was all you heard on the radio: Beatles, Beatles, Beatles, said Fred Cleveland, who owns Eighth Note Music in Oneonta. “You weren’t ‘in’ unless you had a Beatles record, said Markuson. The next year, Meg and a friend boarded a bus to New York City to see the Beatles’ Aug. 15, 1965, concert at Shea Stadium. “We were in the nosebleed section, she said. “The band was so tiny, I wasn’t sure who was who — and all the girls were screaming. I think I even still have the tickets. When the Clevelands
opened the Eighth Note in the ‘70s, the Beatles influence was still huge, even though the band had broken up. “People would hear them play, then come in and buy a guitar,â€? said Cleveland. “They’d say to themselves, ‘I can do that’. We could see the traffic building. They really kicked everything into high gear for rock ‘n’ roll.â€? He even occasionally tuned a piano for John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, who maintains a summer residence in Treadwell. “Sean Lennon used to come in and see what we had,â€? he said. (Mom and son have also lunched at the nearby Autumn CafĂŠ.) But not all the Beatles memories were as happy as that first performance. “I was home watching a basketball game when I got a call from CNN,â€? said former broadcaster Brian Madden, who teaches at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick. “They told me to go down to the Dakota, because John Lennon had just been shot.â€? Madden stayed there all the next day, standing on top of a news van parked on the corner of West 72nd and Central Park West as mourners placed flowers and cards. “It was my first really big news story,â€? he said. “I went live every hour, report-

ing updates. And even with their breakup in 1970 and passing of Lennon and George Harrison, who died in 2001, the Beatles live on into the next generations. “I don’t remember not being obsessed with the Beatles, said Darcy Gibson, Oneonta, who plays full Beatles albums live as Sgt. Pepper’s Phony Hearts Club Band and the Justice League “I’ve been playing them since I was eight, when I first picked up a guitar. At the end of 2012, 48 years after the Beatles first landed in the U.S., Bassett themed its annual New Year’s Eve gala at The Otesaga “All You Need is Love, complete with the cast of Beatlemania playing tunes in full costume. Both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr still play live to sold-out crowds. “I saw Ringo at the Westbury Music Fair in 2003, said Gibson. “Those first moments, straining to see, and there was this thrill when Ringo came out on stage, ‘Oh my God, a Beatle is right there’! And Tillapaugh still gets giddy talking about that episode of Ed Sullivan. “They changed music so much, she said. “They helped it evolve, they pushed the limits.’

Traveling Couple Finds Friend In Homer HOMER/From B1 e-book. Dillard, who teaches at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and Webber, a community organizer in Portland, married a year ago July, got in their van and headed cross country. They pursued a zig-zag course to Portland, Maine, then zig-zagged across a southern route back home. Courtney and Matt had devised the idea of “Breakfast with Strangers during conversations with other diners in what was the couple’s Saturday morning ritual, breakfasting out. They advertised their idea on craigslist.com, which enabled them to line up some breakfast dates, and the listing also generated $8,000 in donations to help finance their trip. In September, they arrived in Cooperstown, had a cup of coffee with Mayor
Jeff Katz and Pat Szarpa, Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce director, and they put her in touch with Osterhoudt, an Oneonta native whose family moved to Cooperstown when he was a baby. He was raised in Phoenix Mills. “We’d like to take you out for breakfast, Homer remembers them asking him. “Where would you like to go? He chose the Cooperstown Diner. The resulting interview – it is posted on www. breakfastwithstrangers.com – recounts Osterhoudt’s love affair with the Hall of Fame Inductions. “The game and the Hall have become a quintessential piece of who he is and he has become an integral part of the town and its history, the couple recount. Annually, Homer now can be found in the VIP section of the ceremony in the
field to the east of the Clark Sports Center, as he intends to be Sunday, July 27, when the crowd is expected to rival the 82,000 that showed up for the Cal Ripken Jr./Tony Gwynn induction of 2007. “Before the ceremony he is likely to be found just outside the Hall standing proudly with a sign around his neck proclaiming, ‘I was here June 12, 1939, and at all inductions and games since World War II.’ (Homer offers a caveat: in addition to two WWII lapses, he represented Cooperstown Baptist Church at one convention that occurred on an Induction Weekend, requiring him to be absent.) “What words of wisdom do you live by? the couple asked Osterhoudt. His reply: “Be friendly to people. It helps you to be open, try new things and grow. By the way: Homer’s breakfast consisted of cinnamon-roll French toast and milk. Yummy.

James F. Faliveno, 67; Developed, Marketed Monu-Cad Worldwide CHERRY VALLEY – James F. Faliveno, 67, founder and president of Monumental Computer Applications Inc., Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully in his home on Jan. 26, 2014, following a brief illness. Born Aug. 18, 1946, in Gloversville, to the late Fred Faliveno and Mary Viscosi, Jim attended local schools and graduated from Ithaca College. Monumental Computer, now serving the industry for almost 30
years, grew out of Mr. Faliveno’s experience in the memorial business. The company’s product, Monu-Cad, has a library of 12,000 designs that can be cut onto stone, replacing what had been a timeconsuming artisanal process. He was recognized in his profession, teaching sales management for the National Monument Association and serving as president of the state Monument Dealers Association. Jim married Jeanne Burton on
Aug. 5, 1995, in an outdoor ceremony at home in Cherry Valley.
