He also worked in the art department for the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival entry “Deep Powder,” filmed in Hudson, where he got to get a little creative with his props. “They give you a tremendous amount of leeway,” he said. “Since it’s about a secret ski society, we had all these old wooden skis that we carved up with all these fake names and symbols — but no one’s ever going to see them that closely.” He also had a chance to work on a film by his idol, Wes Anderson. “I drove the van to the test shoots for “Moonrise Kingdom,” he said. “My mom took me to see ‘Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou’ because Henry Cooper” – Cooperstown’s Henry S.F. Cooper –“was in it,” he said. “It sort of came full circle.” Ultimately, Moffat says, he would like to produce. “I love working with writers and directors to watch it develop,” he said. “The collaboration is a little exciting.” And he still has that old camera he used to shoot the chicken footage. “We got it out just a few weeks ago,” he said. “We were using it to watch old movies.”

Arthur L. Stockin, 92; Farmer’s Percherons In City’s Memorial Day Parade For Years ONEONTA – Arthur L. “Sam” Stockin, 92, who used to ride his white stallion in the Memorial Day parade, passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at the Chestnut Park Nursing & Rehab Center. Sam was born on Sept. 16, 1921, in Meridale, the son of the late George and Rose (Mondone) Stockin. On Nov. 15, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Frances M. Bender, at the Treadwell United Methodist Church. They celebrated 52 years of marriage until Frances’ passing in 1995. He was involved in farming for most of his life, owning and operating two dairy farms over the years. Sam had a deep love for horses, having many on his farms over the years. His favorite was a big American Albino show stal-
lion that he raised from a colt, which he would ride in the Oneonta Memorial Day parades while carArthur Stockin rying the American flag. After retiring from farming, he drove school buses for the Laurens Central School district for 20 years. He was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church. Sam is survived by his daughter, Raneé (Bob) Stockin-Moss of Laurens; his sons, Ronald H. Stockin of Lander, Wyo., and Michael C. Stockin of Morris; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, Kylie and Klara Whittaker of Delhi, Aidan and Camden
Barbara M. Rizzo, 74; City Born, Retired From State Labor Office ONEONTA – Barbara M. Rizzo, 74 , retired claims examiner at the state Department of Labor, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at Fox Hospital with her loving family at her side. Barbara was born on July 13, 1939, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late James D. and Anna E. (Gritt) McKean. She married Anthony M. Rizzo on Nov. 18, 1961, at St. Mary’s Church. He predeceased her on Oct. 29, 2007. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Strike & Spare Ladies Bowling League, the Sixth Ward Athletic Club, where she played in the Thursday Afternoon Card Club, and the OHS Alumni Association. She was also a Mary Kay sales representative. Barbara is survived her sons, Michael Rizzo and his wife, Terri of Loganville, Ga., and Clinton Rizzo and his wife, Kim, Town of Maryland. Also, eight grandchildren, Nicole, Tyler, Ryleigh, Brett, Lance, Derek, Damian and Aaliyah; her great-granddaughter, Lenora; her sister, Judith A. McWherter of Oneonta; her brothers-in-law, Nicholas S. Rizzo and Joseph L. Rizzo and his wife, Michal Ann; two nieces, Nicola Rizzo and Erin Doucas and her husband, Christian; a nephew, Joseph Rizzo; a great-nephew, Logan Doucas; many cousins, and her dear friends, Philip and Jeanette Colone. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by her father- and motherin-law, Nicholas and Anna Rizzo.
The funeral was Tuesday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary’s, with Father David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating. Interment followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. Memorial donations may be made to the the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820. Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

William C. Peters, 75; For 21 Years, Served As Schuyler Lake Fire Chief EXETER – William “Bill” C. Peters, 75, Town of Exeter, Schuyler Lake fire chief for 21 years, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Bassett Hospital, after a long illness. Born at Bassett Hospital Sept. 30, 1938, Bill was the son of Lewis C. and Gertrude (Rathbun) Peters. He was raised in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1956. He enlisted in the Navy in 1956 and served as a sonar operator aboard the USS Thomas J. Gary, a Destroyer Escort. Following active service Bill remained in the Naval Reserve until September 1962. Upon his return to Cooperstown, Bill worked at Western Auto and thereafter, and for many years, he worked as a buyer in material procurement at Remington Arms in Ilion. Most recently, Bill worked at Bassett Hospital. Bill was an active and dedicated volunteer in his community. It could be said that his favorite activity, even more so than bowling which he loved and excelled at, was volunteering in the
fire service. He was a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department in 1960-1972, the Richfield Springs Fire Department 1972-1974, and in the Schuyler Lake Fire Department from 1974 until his death. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Nancy (Reynolds) on Dec. 14, 2013. He is survived by his son, Mark Peters of Cape Cod, Mass.; his daughter, Jaci Lamb of Cape Coral, Fla.; his stepson, John (Lori) Lamb of Exeter; and his stepson, Brett Utter (and his significant other, Heather Minnich) of Newington, Conn. Bill, or “Billy Bob” as he was known by members of his family, is also survived by his sister, Donna Robinson of Cooperstown and his brother, Lee (Dottie) Peters of North Carolina and his brother Jerry (Kathleen) Peters of Connecticut. Bill is also survived by five grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown, with Rev. Bill Delia, pastor of the Cooperstown United
David L. Duncan Sr., 59; Enjoyed Tinkering With Cars MARYLAND – David L. Duncan Sr., 59, a lifelong area resident who worked at Hawley’s Auto Recycle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, Jan. 29, 2014, at Bassett Hospital. He was born on April 30, 1954, in Herkimer, son of the late Frank D. and Shirley Slater Duncan. He was raised and educated in Richfield David Springs and Duncan Milford. On Oct. 5, 1974, he married the former Darlene Hawley in Schenevus. They first made their home in Cherry Valley and for the past 35 years in Maryland. David first worked for Dave Drake Farms in Milford and later for his fatherin-law, Glen C. Hawley at Hawley’s Auto Recycle in Cooperstown Junction. He formally retired in 2002, but would still turn wrenches in his garage at home. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Darlene; two sons, David Duncan Jr. of Otego, Derek Duncan and his wife, Shannon of Cooperstown Junction; one daughter, Naomi Grigoli and her husband, John of Maryland; two brothers and their wives, Frank D. Jr. and Teena Duncan of Schenevus, Joseph and Joyce Duncan of
Frankfort; two sisters, Terry Kilts of Cooperstown, Dawn Covey of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins; a special friend, Wesley “Chester” Baldwin.
Methodist Church, officiating. The Schuyler Lake Fire Department will conduct the fireman’s service as part of the memorial service. The family will be present from 5 pm until the service to receive friends. Burial and committal will occur in the spring on the family plot in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
