EORGE W. BUSH MOST FAMILIAR WITH WHAT COOPERSTOWN OFFERS BOTH BUSHES HERE: Expo/Met Gary Carter invited former president George H.W. Bush to his 2003 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. “41” attended with his grandson, Robert. HILL & BILL: In September 2003, former president Bill Clinton accompanied his wife, Hillary, to Cooperstown while she was campaigning for U.S. Senate from New York. They visited the Hall of Fame. THEN IT WAS FDR: Thengovernor Franklin D. Roosevelt keynoted Owen D. Young Central School’s first graduation in June 1931 in Van Hornesville, just north of the Otsego-Herkimer line. Young, the GE founder then being mentioned as a candidate for president in 1932, invited him. Within a year, FDR was front-runner for the White House, and was elected that fall.

An avid Heitz in ’91 fisherman, Guilfoyle looked forward to Saturday mornings in April on Otsego Lake. “Would you be available tomorrow morning for a tour of the Hall?” he asked Heitz, who was Hall of Fame librarian at the time. GARFIELD ROOTS HERE: Solomon Garfield, great-grandfather of President James Garfield, a Civil War general and second president, after Lincoln, to be assassinated, moved to the Town of Worcester in 1790. The president’s mother’s family passed through Otsego County where his dad, Thomas, met the young Eliza Ballou. The Ballous continued to Ohio, Thomas pursued and married her, so the president was raised a Buckeye. A state historic marker on Route 7 is near Solomon’s cabin.

Seward, Idelson Saw Glimmers Of Greatness SEWARD/From B1 recruited for The Otesaga fundraiser was from faraway Texas, an oilman who had recently escaped the taint of an SEC investigation into his failed company and was, in effect, between jobs. Granted, he was the vice president’s son, a VP who was running for president with no assurance of victory. As it happened, he would drive over in a rented car from Kennebunkport, Maine, where he’d just agreed to join his father’s campaign. That father was George H.W. Bush, now frequently referred to as “41.” The son was George W. Bush – “43”. We now know the two would become the first
father-son presidential combination since John Adams and John Quincy Adams in the early days of the Republic. “He was very unassuming,” remembers Seward, who arranged for the future president to stay overnight at Edgewater, then 1 Lake Street, the imposing brick mansion built in the 18teens by Isaac Cooper, second son of William Cooper, the community’s founder. Owned by the Delaware Otsego Corp., it was home to its president, Walter Rich, a man with a formidable political sense. Not enough, however, to predict his guest’s future; Rich was out of town, and didn’t bother to come back
to greet his visitor. In the years the followed, Rich would often tell Seward, “If I knew this guy was going to be elected president, I would have come back from wherever I was.” Seward doesn’t remember anything that Bush said at The Otesaga that night, but he remembers him as approachable and down to earth. “He’s the kind of guy you’d love to have a beer with.” Even then, he had nicknames for everyone, Seward said. “We had a little press conference before the event, and a reporter asked him what his ambitions were,” said Seward. “I’ll never forget his answer: to make some money and stay out
of jail. He accomplished both of those – in addition to becoming president of the United States.” The next year, Seward was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in the Superdome in New Orleans. “I looked him up,” said the senator. “He was part of the Texas delegation, and we spent a little time together.” More than a decade passed. In 1999, Seward was into his second decade in Albany, moving into the leadership, where – now in his 14th term – he is firmly ensconced. As for Bush, after his father’s successful election he had invested in the Texas Ranger baseball team and served as its managing partner, the public face.

man for the Hall of Fame, now president, also remembers that regular-guy casualness: “He wanted to go for a run, so his detail asked to borrow my mountain bike.” But Idelson also recognized the future president’s growing heft. “I moderated the press conference,” he said. “You could see where he had the charisma and presence to become president some day. He showed the mettle to go to the top in the White House.” Again, Bush again presided at a fundraiser at The Otesaga. He also hosted Texans drawn to Cooperstown by Ryan’s induction in a tent on the grounds of The Fenimore Art Museum.

Bush and the Republican governor, George Pataki, drove in from Albany. Future first lady Laura was along as well. he was thinking of buying a baseball team. “The Houston Astros?” asked Heitz, who has seen press reports that the team was for sale. “He said ‘no’.” “It was kind of a onesided conversation,” said Heitz. “He seemed distracted. It seemed like he had other things on his mind and was just kind of passing the time.” Later, he surmised it was an unsettled time in the younger Bush’s life. The Texan’s oil company had gone bankrupt, and he had been investigated – and cleared – by the SEC. Unemployed, he had driven over from Kennebunkport, Maine, where he’d agreed to work for his vice-president father’s presidential campaign. It was also about the time, after a carousing youth, he’d given up drinking, the librarian learned in later research. The pledge turned out to be permanent. Heitz mentioned he had been a Marine. “I was in the National Guard,” Bush replied. “Then I made a big mistake,” Heitz recalled. He recounted the story of a judge from Texas who arrived on an inspection tour at Camp Pendleton during the Vietnam Era with a commission in the Texas National Guard signed by LBJ. Knowing nothing about the Marines, “he caused quite a stir.” Bush own service would later become a source of controversy. “At that point, the conversation with George Bush ended,” said Heitz. “Just like that. He didn’t respond to that story. He said,
‘Well, I’m driving a car to the airport in Albany and I’m going to have to leave soon.’ So I said goodbye and wished him well and went over to the library. About 45 minutes later, Heitz stopped by the museum. George Bush was in the museum shop, trying on Texas Rangers’ hats. “I thought that was a pretty good clue,” said Heitz. A few months later it surfaced the future president was in a group seeking to buy the Texas Rangers.

OBITUARIES
Dorothy S. Wood, 90; Active In Arc’s Founding COOPERSTOWN – Dorothy S. Wood, 90, who raised five children in Cooperstown, passed away early Tuesday morning, Feb. 4, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born July 21, 1923, in Westmoreland, Oneida County, the daughter of the late Ray and Villa (Carr) Stoddard. When Dorothy was 11, her mother died and she was raised in the Gilbertsville area by her grandmother, Carrie Stoddard. She graduated from Gilbertsville Central School, then the Utica School of Commerce. During World War II, she was a secretary in the Oneonta area, including serving as office manager for several physicians. On Aug. 20, 1946, Dorothy married Robert Wood in a ceremony in Maple Grove, near Gilbertsville. The couple moved to Cooperstown in 1957. Dorothy was active in the early years of what became Arc Otsego, and served on the board of directors for many years. Dot and Bob and their daughter, Mary Anne, spent many happy retirement years touring the country in their camper. She was a gardener, an avid reader (of mysteries, political biographies and tales of early explorers) and an experimental cook (her “curry-con-carne” is a family legendary disaster tale). She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as deacon. She was also a volunteer at Bassett Hospital and The Meadows. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William and Marie-Christine Wood of Eugene, Ore.; her daughter and son-inlaw, Barbara and Timothy Gill of Cooperstown; her Legal
