It’s not a costume party – it’s the rehearsals of Fly Creek Philharmonic. “Everybody gets wacky and has a good time,” said Schaeffer, one of the 13 original participants. “We practice for three months, and it gets us through the winter.” The show, on Friday-Saturday, March 13-14, marks the 20th year for the Philharmonic. This year’s theme, “Two by Two,” celebrates songs about animals, from “The Flight of the Bumblebee” to “Teddy Bear Picnic.” Even the instruments have animal themes. “This is the ‘Frogavarious’,” said Ellen TilPlease See PHIL, B4

She pursued a degree in business at SUNY Oneonta, but as soon as she graduated she was on her way to the bright lights of Broadway. “I hit the ground running,” she said. “Auditioning was my job. I auditioned every single day.” And it quickly paid off. “Within a month, I had booked a gig as one of the ‘Hot Box Girls’ in ‘Guys and Dolls’ at a regional theater in Wisconsin,” she said. “I was out there for three months, then came back and kept auditioning.” She toured in the ensemble with productions of “Flashdance” – where she also understudied for the main character, Alex – “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Chorus Line” before landing in the ensemble of “Into the Heights,” where she also understudied for Nina, Vanessa and Carla. And in addition to “Hamilton,” she also performed in “A Piece of My Heart,” at the Signature Theater, as a “lab,” where a show

triangles and kazoos. “She had such fond memories of that, so she wanted to do it with her friends,” said Paula Schaeffer, Bill’s wife and a fellow original member. They played in her living room and performed a show at the Thanksgiving Home. They submitted a tape and were selected to perform “The Toy Symphony” on the show March 13, 1996, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minn. “We hadn’t gotten to speak with Garrison Keillor much before the show, so he met with us afterwards and we jammed,” said Paula. The next year, they began their Methodist Church residency, with costumes, themes and, occasionally, new words to classic songs. “Susan wrote words for the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus about a woman who couldn’t remember what another woman’s name was,” said Paula. “So where the ‘Hallelujahs’ were, instead, we sang, ‘Her name is Susan’!” Susan Rodd passed away last year, and this performance is dedicated to her, with the proceeds going to
