Old Street Signs New By LIBBY CUDMORE

W
ith a painter’s eyes, May-Britt Joyce noticed that something was amiss in Cooperstown. “I saw that all the old street signs were rusty,” she said. “They looked terrible.” The 34 black-and-white street signs that marked intersections of Pine and Lake, Walnut and Linden, and Hill and Main Streets – among others – had fallen into disrepair. “And I thought, ‘I can do something’.” She consulted with Village Trustee Cindy Falk, who chairs the Streets Committee, Instead of something green like about repainting the signs this... herself. “We didn’t realize how bad they looked,” said Falk. Joyce began with the sign at the corner of Hill and Main streets, on Irish Hill. The village delivered the signs to her and in her basement workshop, she sands, primes and then repaints the signs with rustproof paint. The village then picks them up and erected the fresh signs. May-Britt Joyce’s Volunteerism Part Of A Trend In Cooperstown SIGNS/From B1 “I get just as excited seeing a finished sign as I do a painting!” she said. The signs were made in 1946 and hung the following year, replacing wooden signs that had been erected in 1932, according to clippings unearthed by Village Historian Hugh MacDougall.
In repainting these signs, Joyce is following a tradition of Cooperstown volunteerism – Ralph Russell repainted and repaired them for years. “My friends are telling me I should put my logo on them for history!” she said. At one point, Roger and Dorothy Smith noticed the sign outside their

Spurbeck’s Grocery, at Leatherstocking and Railroad, had rusted, and they repainted it. (As is MayBritt, Dot’s also an artist.) May-Britt is focusing her efforts on the signs in the downtown to help the village get ready for a busy summer. “The one down by Fair and Lake is next,” she said. “It’s really bad.” Just the other day, Kurt Carmen, the village streets superintendent, advised Joyce the first repainted sign was to be reinstalled at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at Lake Street and Pine Boulevard. It’s part of a trend in Cooperstown, seniors working actively to better their community. “Rich McCaffrey suggested we

from fire hydrants,” said Falk. “It’s something the village would do eventually, but it’s always nice to have a helping hand.”
At the Candidate’s Forum in Village Hall of March 9, Charles Hudson suggested a way for young people to help their neighbors: “I had the idea that we could put together a service where people could call up and get kids to help them shovel snow and rake leaves,” he said. “If it was sponsored by the village, I think it would fly.” Richard Blabey, a retiree who lives at Grove and Chestnut, chimed in: He makes a point of digging out fire hydrants, and suggested others might consider the same. “It’s a small community, like a family,” said Joyce. “And you always want to make your family home look nice.”

Gibson Helped Create ‘Choice Card,’ Henson Makes Sure Vets Aware Of It CARD/From B1 tion crusades is to let the 5,253 veterans in Otsego County know about the Choice Card program, a new health care initiative – U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-19, co-sponsored the bill – to give veterans greater access to local health care. “We have reliable, competent doctors here in Otsego County,” the congressman said in an interview. “Let’s use them!” It goes like this, Henson explained: Any veteran enrolled in VA healthcare can see a doctor at Bassett or Fox – once the hospitals are declared “eligible facilities” – if there is more than a 30day wait at the VA hospital in Albany. “All veterans should have received their Choice Card,”
said Henson. “If not, they can come see me.” In addition to expanding medical coverage, the Choice Card reduces costs for co-pays, deductibles and prescription drugs where it’s accepted. “My big concern is veterans taking the Choice Card and thinking it exonerates them from all financial liability,” he said. “I don’t want to see anyone get stuck with a huge bill, so call ahead to make sure where you’re going accepts the card.” One snag that has developed, according to Gibson: No “eligible facility” has yet been established locally. “They’re counting the Bainbridge VA clinic as within the 40 miles,” said the congressmen. “However, if someone has to have
AllOTSEGO. seniority
a procedure done, it’s going to be performed in Albany” – outside of the 40 miles. “I’m working on a bill now to clarify the language so they can be treated at one of our hospitals.” Less useful, Gibson says, is that the 40-mile radius is “as the crow flies.” “Do you know any veterans that fly? Me neither – they drive. It may be 39 miles to the clinic, but driving there may be 50 miles. They have the Choice Card, but no way to use it!” But while the language is being clarified, the Veterans Services provides a van to transport vets from their homes to Albany for their appointments. “We run Tuesday through Friday,” he said. “We take good care of them.” But whether it’s questions about the Choice Card or concerns about benefits, Henson wants to help. “I want people to learn about what they can receive,” he said. “They deserve to be compensated.”

Betty Peterson, Longtime Florida Resident, Leaves Local Survivors ONEONTA – Elizabeth Rose (Betty) Peterson, a longtime Florida resident lived for the past year at St. James Manor with her daughter, Beth, passed away on March 14, 2015. She was born in Springfield, N.J., in 1921, to Margaret and Phillip Bono (Americanized spelling), the fifth of eight children. While still in high school, Betty met her future husband, John, in a soda shop. They were married just before World War II. John was a career army officer, which allowed the couple to travel the world. Three of their four children were born in different states, and one overseas. In the early 1960s, John retired from the military, and they moved to Miami, Fla. A few years later they moved again to Sarasota, where she lived for over 40 years, even after her beloved husband passed away in 1985. In Sarasota, Betty was an active member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church, and the Sarasota’s Lions Club where she participated in many committees, including the Rosary Guild. She

was the guild’s treasurer for many years. Betty enjoyed working outside the home as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, reading, and occasionally going to a casino. When John was alive they always had a boat and spent many beautiful Florida days on the water. Even though both John and Betty were from the Northeast, they always vacationed south of Miami in the Florida Keys or Everglades. Betty’s eyes would light up when she told stories of growing up in a large, happy family, or when she met her husband, or her overseas travels, or the experiences she had as an army wife. Among her many survivors are two daughters who live locally, Lisbeth NielsenGildea, at St. James, and Margaret (Peggy Peterson) and her husband Ken Golden of Oneonta. On Saturday, March 21, at 12:30 there will be a celebration of her life at Saint James Manor in Oneonta, New York. We will miss her.

EAST SPRINGFIELD – Jane Martha Rathbun Herring, 80, an East Springfield native, died peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2015, at her home in Wappingers Falls, where she had lived for more than a half-century. Jane was born on Feb. 6, 1935, the daughter of Dean O. Rathbun and L. Marguerite Jones Rathbun. She grew up on Shadowbrook Dairy Farm, a real farmer’s daughter and a country girl at heart. Jane pursued her teaching degree at SUNY New Paltz, then was a substitute teacher in the Wappingers Falls School District, but her primary focus was being a loving wife and mother. She had a lifelong love of music and taught the organ for years. Jane was a 50-year-plus member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wappingers Falls serving as church elder, Bible study leader, and on committees too numerous to list. She was a faithful member of the Women’s Morning Fellowship, knitting and crocheting countless baby sweaters for Church World Services. Jane was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American
Revolution. On July 22, 1956, in East Springfield, Jane married Frederick Albert Herring, who survives at home. She is Jane M. also survived Herring by her son, Dean Frederick Herring and his wife Susan of Youngsville, N.C.; her grandson, Michael Herring and his wife Sarah, also of Youngsville; her brother, Richard D. Rathbun of East Springfield; and her sister, Ellen Delocis of Hopewell Junction. Interment will be in East Springfield Cemetery in May, more information to follow. Contact Richard Rathbun for more information. Memorial donations may be made to Church World Services through the First Presbyterian Church of Wappingers Falls or the East Springfield Cemetery Association, c/o Richard Rathbun.
