THURSDAY-FRIDAY, MARCH 27-28, 2014

Polish Troupe Took Fran Raeder To The Stars DANCE/From B1 Polish neighborhood of Green Point, Brooklyn, and although she always loved to dance, didn’t start taking classes until after graduating from St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, when she was invited by a friend to one of Lazowski’s lessons. “We had one class per week and we’d rehearse for our show,” she said. “I loved those days; I could eat all I wanted and not gain an ounce!” The group performed for polka parties and at dances all over the Tri-State area, and quickly gained a status as one of the premier dance troupes in the area. “We became a family,” she said. “We traveled here, there, everywhere. We’d get a call, Gene would borrow his father’s car, pile all the girls in and off we’d go!” And their status wasn’t just reserved for local Polish families — Elizabeth Taylor invited the troupe to dance for her third husband, Mike Todd, at an internationalthemed birthday party at the old Madison Square Garden at Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th streets. Pianist Arthur Rubinstein gave them a space on the dance floor at the New York’s Delmonico Hotel. “He wanted something different,” she said. She and Gene were even invited to perform at the 1956 Harvest Moon Ball at the old Madison Square Garden. And even though they didn’t win the dance contest, their lively dancing caught the eye of Arthur Murray, who invited them to dance on his TV show, “The Arthur Murray Party.” “I was on the same bill as Eydie Gorme!” she said. She also posed, with the group, for the Polka Kings album cover. “I love these costumes, but they’re solid woven wool, they weighed a ton,” she said. “We got dressed up and they took us out to Central Park for the photos.” She danced for 10 years with the company, performing with the Metropolitan Opera in “Petrushka” and in an original ballet choreographed by Lazowski, based on the legend of Pan Twardowski, a sorcerer who gave his soul to the devil in exchange for fame and power.

But her career as an interior designer was soon taking up much of her time, and she retired from the troupe. “I gave all my costumes to the other girls who were interested,” she said. “But I kept the boots.” In 1990, after her husband Paul retired, the moved to Cooperstown. “I wanted to live in a Victorian house in a small town,” she said. “I got both.” Paul died in 2007. Though she no longer dances, she still holds true to her Polish pride. She served as a translator at Bassett Hospital, and when Polish exchange students

come into town through Rotary, she meets with them to talk about the old country. “I go back to Poland every two years for three weeks,” she said. “I go see my cousins, eat, sit and talk.”

And although she no longer gets out on the dance floor, she still wears the red boots whenever she gets the chance. “I just enjoyed doing it,” she said. “We had a good time.”

Foundation To Aid Club

Thursday, March 27

FOUNDATION/From B1 the organization, targeting students who exhibit good sportsmanship and community responsibility. Every year, the Sixth Ward Athletic Club gives four $500 scholarships to students who show “scholastic leadership, citizenship and extracurricular activities.” The club also gives a scholarship to the male and female athletes of the year and donates to the wrestling program, Little League and youth soccer. In addition to scholarships, the foundation also has plans to give money to other area non-profits, including – most recently – the Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump. “We used to have a jumper, but she moved away,” said Gravelin. The foundation also has plans to reach out to community organizations, including the Oneonta Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA and Hospice. They were named a “super-donor” to the Conservation Alliance of New York, giving over $1,000 to Otsego and Delaware food banks. “This is only our first year of the foundation,” said Gravelin. “But we hope to be able to contribute more for years to come.”
