or the Cooperstown Presbyterian Church’s congregation, there’s more to worship than hymns and a sermon. “It’s a Christian function to take care of the Earth that God has given us,” said Karen Mihan, head of the Environmental Stewardship Team. For the last two years, the church has been an “Earth Care” congregation, a designation given by the Presbyterian Church USA to churches who focus on environmental stewardship in worship, education facilities and outreach.

And to help inspire others to take up their mission, the church will also have a display at the Milford Earth Festival on Saturday, April 11. “It will help tell other churches what we’ve done,” said Mihan.

Even the stained-glass windows got an energy-efficient makeover. “We installed new covers on the outside to help insulate,” said Blabey. And the work has really paid off. Since insulating the attic of the Church House, $1,500 has been saved on heating bills, and new furnaces allowed the congregation save money during the just-ending long, cold winter. But savings are not the impetus. “We should be doing these things anyway,” said Blabey. “The cost savings are a side benefit.” Earlier this year, one couple donated LED bulbs for the sanctuary, and just recently, a collection was taken up to put LED bulbs in the chapel. “You

Gabrielle Sadler, 20, At Cobleskill; Brother Anthony, 13, In 8th Grade CHERRY VALLEY – Funeral service for the sister and brother who died in a triple-fatality at a home near the Cherry ValleySharon town last week has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, April 10, at First Presbyterian Church. Calling hours for Gabrielle Sabler, 20, and Anthony Sabler, 13, will be 4-7 p.m. the afternoon before at Lappeus Funeral Home, Sharon Springs. Father John Roos will perform the funeral mass. The Sablers, along with Ashley A. Tefft, 22, died in a fire at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at 165 Hone Road in the Town of Cherry Valley, state police reported. They ruled the cause of death as accidental, “caused by asphyxia due to the inhalation of smoke and heated combustible material.” The origin and cause of the fire remained under investigation. Both were the children of Frank and Doris (Bialt) Sabler. According to the funeral home, Gabrielle was born in Staten Island on July 12, 1994, graduated from Sharon Springs Central School and was studying computers at SUNY Cobleskill. Ashley was her close friend. Anthony, a Sharon Springs eighth grader, enjoyed spending time with his friends playing video games, soccer, basketball, and volunteering at the church. In addition to the parents, survivors include three brothers, Frank, Benjamin, and Alexander; two sisters, Elizabeth and Christine; a maternal grandmother, Jeanne Lagasse; two aunts, Jeannine and Celina Bialt; and four uncles, Bernard, Marcel and Alfred Bialt and Steven Sabler.
