The Green Earth in Oneonta installed a rooftop system in 2012 that fills 25 percent of the health food store’s annual electricity need. “Over a two-day period a few weeks ago, we made $90 of electricity,” said owner Dean Roberts. “Since we installed it, we’ve saved $7,500. It’s a good deal.” But solar power doesn’t just help the owner of the panels. “When you produce more than you use, it feeds neighboring buildings and residences, so the utility company doesn’t have to spread that arm,” said Doherty. “If we can install systems to a high level, the companies can predict where they can cut back and eliminate a lot of those inefficiencies on the grid.” “On a peak day, we make 10 times as much electricity as we use,” said Roberts. “It saves us money every day.” That electricity goes back onto the grid, and in New York, NYSEG gives credits for the power your produce. “You can use those credits to reduce your bill in winter, when the panels aren’t producing as much power,” said Doherty. It’s what he hopes to do in Schoharie County, where he was just awarded a contract for the Solarworks Schoharie community initiative, where 20 homes and businesses have agreed to install solar panels. “It will help drive the price down,” he said. “And they’ll help educate their neighbors.” He hopes to get a similar solar community model started in Otsego County. “Finding a contractor for anything is intimidating,” said Doherty. “People get
