hen Jane Cook was offered the position as principal of Oneonta Community Christian School in 2007, Pastor Norman Moran, the school’s founder, told her to pray on her decision.

“He told me the school was founded on prayer,” she said. “He said it was the most important piece of my decision to accept.” Now, 30 years since its founding, that Biblical foundation is still as much a part of the school as it was in 1985. “We’re known as a school of prayer,” she said. “I’ve been at board meetings where we aren’t sure if we’re going to make payPlease See OCCS, B3

Larry Holmes Might Be In Oneonta For Launch Of ‘Meeting Marvis’ Audiobook FRAZIER/From B1 Dillon hosts of the Art a La Carte radio show, was most recently seen in “A Christmas Carol” at The Farmers’ Museum. Brunson, Orpheus Theatre’s former technical director, is perhaps best known for his annually recitation of “I Have a Dream” at the Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration in January. Potter, the owner of Pie in the Sky, met Fraizer in 2009 after watching a movie about the “Thrilla in Manila” fight. “I called the number for his father’s gym in Philadelphia, and although the gym had closed, the number still worked – and Marvis answered.” The two became close friends, and Marvis visits every summer. And now, Potter is hard at work on his next book, a biography of heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who was featured in “Meet Marvis” and has told the author he will be at the kick-off. “We’re hoping to pack the place,” he said. “People will have a lot of fun.” And Frazier will be on

hand to sign copies of the book. “Meet Marvis” followed Frazier’s life and boxing career, from his famous father’s training in the ring to his own rise as the 1979 Golden Gloves Heavyweight, to 1983 loss against Larry Holmes and his 1986 loss to a young Mike Tyson, as well as his post-boxing career as an ordained minister serving in prison ministries. The audiobook is a “dramatic reading,” rather than a straight narrative, with Dillon reading for Jamie, and Brunson reading as Marvis and Smokin’ Joe. “It’s not as easy as it sounds,” said Dillon. “When we started, we thought we could knock

it off in a couple weeks, but now it’s a year later and we’re just finishing up!” Both Dillon and Brunson have plenty of acting experience, ..???... but Dillon found that audio is something completely different. “I’ve done radio advertising, but 30-60 seconds is nothing compared to eight hours,” said Dillon. But when they’re in the studio, what comes out has been more than Potter could have ever planned. “I just listen to them read,” he said. “When I was writing the book, I’d write something and think, ‘I hope readers can understand what I’m trying to say here.’ And Reggie always delivered that. I enjoyed the whole experience.” In the two years since it’s been released, “Meet Marvis Frazier” has gained an international following, with copies being shipped as far away as England, South Africa and Australia. In March, it was released as an ebook through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and iTunes.

In Crises, OCCS Trustees Would Pray And, Somehow, Things Worked Out OCCS/From B1 roll, and we spend an hour praying – then, sure enough, the next day, we make payroll. The efficacy of prayer is remarkable.” Oneonta Community Christian School was founded by Moran and a group of parents who wanted an alternative to public schooling. “School isn’t one-sizefits-all,” said Cook. “We try to address all the learning styles – hands-on, visual, audible and spiritual training with a Biblical world view.” The first location was at Main Street Baptist Church with 18 students, three teachers and a principal, Ron Woudenberg, who now teaches at Emmanuel

Baptist Academy in Penn Yan. But the school quickly grew, and has moved twice since before landing at the current location, 158 River St., in 1996. And now, with 84 students in grades K-12, they’re starting to look for a new location. “This is the most students we’ve ever had,” she said. “Now we just have to decide if we’re going to buy, build or stay where we are.” In a rapidly changing world, OCCS works to find the balance between preparing the students for the modern world and teaching them “old-world” arts. Students can check out laptops and iPads to use during the

day, but they’re not tied to technology. “We still teach cursive writing, starting in kindergarten,” said Cook, who graduated from Hartwick College in 2002; she completed a master’s in counseling ministries from Baptist Bible College, Clark Summit, Pa., in 2008. “We have our students write thank you notes when someone comes to visit or they receive a scholarship. It’s about teaching them to have a respectful heart.” They also do considerable volunteer work, including visiting nursing homes and raking leaves for the widowed and the elderly. Because they are a private

school, they are not subject to the rigorous testing that public schools face, including the Regents exam and Common Core curriculum. And because of this, there have been financial struggles throughout the years. “Tuition only covers 50 percent of the cost here,” said Cook. “But we’re blessed with generous donors.” The school boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, and alumni go on to great careers. “David Gedney, who graduated in 1998, works as a video editor for National Geographic and he did a segment on human trafficking for Oprah,” said Cook. Cook’s youngest son, Jonathan, studied there, and one of her twin sons, Mike, teaches math at the school. OCCS will celebrate 30 years on Friday, April 24 with a party at Foothills, featuring student performances and readings, with an address from Dr. Keith Marlett, chair of Davis’ counseling department. But to Cook, the most important thing is preparing her students to go out into the world as kinder, more thoughtful people. “We have very little bullying The more things change... here,” she said. “We live by the ‘Do Unto Others’ rule, and we use the Bible to reinforce that.”

THE FREEMAN’S JOURNAL B-7

OBITUARIES

Louise Y. Woods, 88; Pioneered E.R. Woods, Cooperstown’s Oldest Baseball Store COOPERSTOWN – The funeral mass for Louise Y. Woods, 88, who with her husband founded F.R. Woods, Cooperstown’s oldest baseball store, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Catholic Church, with Father John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Calling hours for Mrs. Woods, who passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015, at her home in Lakeland Shores, will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday the 19th in St. Mary’s sanctuary. She was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Alfred W. and Paula W. (Grösser) Engelmann, who were both natives of Germany. A graduate of Mineola High School, Louise and her family moved from Long Island to Cooperstown, where her father purchased the 25-acre Lakeland Shores housing development site on the southeast shore of Otsego Lake, and also founded the Lake Front Motel. On Dec. 29, 1946, Louise married Francis Richard Woods in Cooperstown. True entrepreneurs, their first business was a paper recycling plant in Cooperstown Junction. They later sold wholesale goods from a storefront on Main Street in Cooperstown and then purchased 61 Main St., directly across the street and opened F.R. Woods. They first sold toys upstairs – in what was known locally as Toyland – with fine collectible gifts downstairs, and later purchased 63 Main St. next door and started the first sports and baseball memorabilia store in the village. Louise became wellknown by many tourists from around the country for her excellent customer care, as she would custom design team jackets and jerseys to meet particular needs. When licensing and royalties became an issue with Major League Baseball the business model changed, but Louise never lost her

touch in always making sure customers received what they wanted. F.R. Woods later became the first New Era hat retailer, and Louise always took the time to measure any potential customer’s head in order to give them a perfectly fitted ball cap. Upstairs business suites were later converted into the Baseball Town Motel, making it the closest possible tourist accommodation in the village to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. A faithful communicant of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, Louise was always praying for someone in need. A non-judgmental and truly selfless person, she will be remembered as a wonderful mom who would do anything for anybody. Louise is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Norman Johannesen of Cooperstown and Lorelei and David McCall of Wakefield, Mass.; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Jason Johannesen and his wife Melina, and their children Savannah and Leif, Kim Johannesen and her husband Patrick Shepard, Erika Johannesen, Noah Johannesen and Ainsley McCall; her identical twin sister, Haidy Zoeller and her husband, William of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Gail Pyontek and her husband, Edward, of West Trenton, New Jersey; a niece, Paula Wykoff and her husband, Terry, and their daughter Tulsa and her husband Joseph Lepetich; and three nephews,

Alfred Zoeller (and his four children, Lonnie, Alexander, Christian and Brett) and Keith and Erik Pyontek. She is further survived by a very devoted and special family friend, Janet Hotaling, who worked side-byside with Louise for nearly 50 years and in later years provided her with wonderful care. Louise was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Francis R. Woods, who died March 22, 1999. Following Monday’s funeral, interment will be in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
