Compass in hand, flashlight in the other, he worked his way along the high terrain, calling out, hearing nothing in return. But eventually he shouted, and a human cry came back. hile some kids were saving their allowance for a new video game or a Barbie, 5-year-old Charlotte McKane was saving hers to help

Charlotte’s Circle. “I started getting supporters.” Now 18 and a senior at Oneonta High School, Charlotte this year became the youngest recipient of a Trailblazer Award from the city’s Commission on Community Relations & Human Rights. CHARLOTTE/From B1 honored at an April 16 reception by Mayor Dick Miller and Common Council. In 12 years, Charlotte’s Circle has raised over $70,000. Every month, she receives a list of needed items from Family Services, The Violence Intervention Program and Catholic Charities, ranging from toiletries to linens and household items to bus passes and gas cards. Then she goes shopping and fills it. “We do two specialty items,” she said. “We do a baby basket with clothes, diapers, toys, toiletries and a disposable camera, and
a housewarming basket of cleaning supplies.” Unlike most nonprofits, Charlotte says, her charity doesn’t do fundraising events. Each donor receives a monthly report of what was purchased and comments from beneficiaries. “Too often, you give your money and you never see the outcome – showing what the money does encourages support. You don’t want to give $25 and see it go into some CEO’s pension fund.” They also receive money from the Dewar and Eggleston foundations. The average donor gives ten dollars a month, and with no overhead, all that money
goes directly to the charity. “We’ve never had a lack of funds,” she said. “Family Services has told us that without our constant support, they might have had to stop giving out hygiene items.” In addition to the Trailblazer Award, Charlotte was “Miss March” in the 2007 Build-a-Bear calendar as part of their “Huggable Heroes” program. She was also honored with a proclamation from Congress and the state Senate, as well as awards from the NAACP and Opportunities for Otsego, and a scholarship from Kohl’s department store.
In her spare time, she was a member of the FIRST Robotics team and the Envirothon, and participate in the Speech & Debate Nationals in Birmingham, Ala., in June. Though Charlotte will start college at Mount Holyoke this fall, Charlotte’s Circle will continue. “The project will go on,” she said. “We’ve already begun the transition.” For Charlotte, giving back comes naturally. “There’s no reason not to,” she said. “I’ve always been really grateful for what I have – this is a way of improving the quality of life in this community.”

Hawkeye’s Prowess In Woods Lives On HAWKEYE/From B1 run in the family.” Indeed it must, for Bruce Shipman – and there are many Shipmans still among us – traces his lineage to dad Glyndon, to grandfather George, to Albert (whose brother, Bruce’s namesake, fought at Gettysburg), to perhaps Oliver, who ran an iron mill in Springfield Center, to Chandler, to Robert, to Samuel, to the most famous woodsman in America. David Shipman, that is: Natty Bumppo, The Leatherstocking, Pathfinder, Deerslayer, La Longue Carabine and – most famously, in “The Last of the Mohicans” – Hawkeye,
inspiration for Cooperstown Central School’s new athletic nickname, adopted Tuesday, April 23, after “Redskin” was dispatched in a flurry of community-splitting debate. For a period, there was some disagreement over Natty Bumppo’s origins; after Hoosick Falls claimed “Nathaniel Shipman” as its own, and even tried to erect a monument in his honor in 1915, as recounted by Ralph Birdsall in “The Story of Cooperstown” (1917). But Alan Taylor’s Pulitzerwinning “William Cooper’s Town” (1996), definitively proved the Cooperstown connection, tracing early records and bolstering them

with details from James Fenimore Cooper’s “The Pioneers” and his “Chronicles of Cooperstown.” Taylor Bruce concludes Shipman that David Shipman, who had resided in Hoosick Falls for a period, was living at the south end Otsego Lake, along with Indian John and his son – models for Chingachgook and Uncas respectively – when William Cooper first visited the area in 1785. While David Shipman had only one son, Samuel, that son had numerous offspring, and today – nine and 10 generations since Thackeray declared of Hawkeye (via Birdsall), “La Longue Carabine is one of the great prize-men of fiction. He ranks with your Uncle Toby, Sir Roger de Coverley, Falstaff, historic figures all” – there are many dozens of Shipmans around Otsego County and southern Herkimer. Some 150 attended a family reunion in a West Winfield park some

half-dozen years ago. (Notables include Donna Shipman, NBT Bank’s vice president in Cooperstown, by marriage to Bruce’s nephew Don of West Winfield; their son, Don, is anchor man at WKTV Utica.) Bruce, among the eldest and the family historian, was born in 1937 in the vicinity of Great Sacandaga Lake. His mother, Ada, died in childbirth when he was 2 and, when the boy was old enough, he “ran the woods.” The lad lacked a hook to catch fish plentiful in the Adirondack streams, but was occasionally able to stun one with a rock and bring it home for supper. When just a lad – 3 or 4 – he remembers his father Glyndon and grandfather George discussing the family’s legacy, and it’s been part of his world ever since. In his home, just west of Columbia Center, Herkimer County, the elder Shipman reviewed multiple pages of a detailed family genealogy he’s pieced together over the years. He showed his forearm, covered with hardly noticeable but distinct fatty tumors, a family trait – the bumps in “Bumppo,” Also at hand were his first edition of Birdsall, Hurd’s 1888 “History of Otsego County” – the frontispiece is the Leatherstocking, standing at the foot of Leatherstocking Falls in the Town of Otsego – and “The Shipman Family in America,” by the late Rita Carl Shipman of Athens, Greene County. The first Shipmans arrived from England in 1639, landing in Saybrook, Conn. Shipman men fought in King Philip’s War (1675-78), and every generation since has served in the military. David Shipman moved to Hoosick to fight in the Revolution, probably in the nearby Battle of Bennington. In 1787 he still owned land there, Taylor found, but the author surmises David was caught up in the westward migration that followed

the American Revolution and had settled near Cooperstown by then. As for Bruce Shipman, by first grade he was in school in West Winfield, where he met his future second wife, Janice – the couple has been married for 23 years. Graduating from high school in Mohawk in 1955, he worked briefly for Sperry Rand but, with the Korean War in progress, he signed up with the Marines. He was chosen for flight school, but opted for ordnance instead. Based at the Naval Air Station in Opa-locka, Fla., his six-year tour of duty took him to Cuba (before Castro), Panama and Greece. On his return in 1962, he rejoined Sperry – by then, it was Univac – where he worked for 16 years. For the next 23, he tended an Erie Canal lock between Herkimer and Utica. Once, a newspaper reporter overheard him remarking on how the Leatherstocking Region was a misnomer, since it included the Mohawk Valley, well beyond his famous forebear’s hunting ground along Oaks Creek, and he was written up in the local pennysaver. He retired on turning 60. His brother, George, who lived in Edmeston, died in 1980. But Bruce still has two sisters in the neighborhood, Luella Harper, 82, in Columbia Center and Glenis Heiland,73, in Cedarville. His two sons are also veterans: Bruce lives in
North Columbia and Glen in Orlando, Fla. While Bruce is comfortable in nature, the most avid outdoorsman of his generation was “Uncle Raymond,” who lived near Schuyler Lake and was “in the woods all the time.” He would go into the underbrush with his traps, to emerge a week later with the furs of multiple minks over his shoulders. His prowess earned him the moniker, “One Shot Shipman.” Once, while walking along a stream, he spotted a deer in a nearby cornfield. He reached down, picked up a round pebble from the stream bed, dropped it down the barrel of his shotgun. End of story – for the deer. A few years ago, Bruce took his cousin, Bernie – Raymond’s son – to Cooperstown’s Lakewood Cemetery, where a cast-iron Hawkeye stands atop an obelisk, dog at his side, scanning Glimmerglass’ far shore. “Who does that statue look like?” Bruce asked. Bernie’s jaw dropped. “It looks like dad!” Glen daughter, Heather, was discharged from the Air Force with an injury, but two years ago she married Sam Baker, another airman. Her wedding portrait hanging on her granddad’s wall has her holding a family heirloom, a shotgun – it hosts a Damascus twist barrel – dating back to the 19th century. The Hawkeye strain lives.

Mortgage foreclosure is a complex process. Some people may approach you about “saving” your home. You should be extremely careful about any such promises. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. There are government agencies, legal aid entities and other non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about foreclosure while you are working with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANKNYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state. ny.us. Ted Lamb, 80; Longest-Serving Member Of Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department COOPERSTOWN – Theodore E. “Ted Lamb, 80, a native of Cooperstown who will be remembered for his faithful devotion to his beloved village, died Friday morning, April 26, 2013, at his home on Linden Avenue. Born Oct. 15, 1932, at Bassett Hospital, the son of Eldred J. and Beatrice A. (Pratt) Lamb, he was a sixth generation descendant of Deigh Chamberlin, who settled the Westville-Hooker Mountain area in the early 1800s. In his youth, and later with the help of Harry Peplinski and Bob Pierro, Ted enjoyed operating the ski tow located on the family farm in Pierstown. After attending the Cooperstown Central School, Ted served in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1955. He
At 57 years, the longestserving member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Engine Company No. 1, Ted took great pleasure in driving the department’s 1952 Mack Fire Truck, which he lovingly called the “Old Girl, for many parades and funerals. “Ted is a fixture in that truck, said Chief Jim Tallman. “He was always working on it, driving it or getting it ready for a parade. He had a lot of stories, and I admired him. He was also a Cooperstown Native Son and a 57-year member of Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Celia B. Lamb of Cooperstown, survivors include two sons, Theodore E. Lamb, Jr. and his wife Kim

the Cooperstown Central School, as a custodian for 31 years and as a bus driver for more than 46 years, having the joy of busing four generations of children. For 43 years, he was the friendly ticket seller at CCS basketball games.
of Clay, and David E. Lamb and his wife Lorie of Schuyler Lake; six grandchildren, Taylor, Shelby and Cooper Lamb and Lindsey, Daeltun and Charlie Sue Lamb; one sister, Joyce A. Crowley and her husband Robert of Turnersville, N.J.; one brother, Larry J. Lamb and his wife Sally of Pleasant Brook; one brother-in-law, Arthur Blessin and his wife Beverly of Fly Creek; one sister-in-law, Betty (Blessin) Schmigg and her husband Gene of North Carolina; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ted was predeceased by his three brothers, Lowell, Stewart, and John. The Lamb family will miss not only our husband, father and grandfather, but especially our “best friend.
Calling hours, hosted by Ted’s sons, were Tuesday, April 30, at Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home. The Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post and a firefighter memorial service were conducted that evening. A private burial was planned Wednesday at Hartwick Seminary Cemetery. En route, Ted was accorded the “final alarm, being driven by the Chestnut Street fire house aboard “Old Girl.
