Managers Explore Ways To Market Oneonta Country Club To Public REACH OUT/From B1 Becoming more accessible is a way of attracting new and younger members. “We want young people to come play,” said Matt Shulte, the club’s PGA pro. “…But they’re just buying a house, starting families. It’s unfair to ask them to come out and spend all their time here.” Another part of the club’s new strategy: Kids play free. And Schulte runs youth golf clinics. “You have that moment where they

first get that ball airborne,” said Schulte. “And you know they’re hooked for life.” And to further widen its appeal, the club has partnered with the Oneonta Tennis Club to use those faculties for a reduced fee. “Now we can say we have a swimming pool!” said Weaver. “It just happens to be five miles away.” The club has also begun reaching out to SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College. “The SUNY Golf club comes out and plays

and Saturday and Sunday,” said Weaver. “A lot of college kids don’t even know we’re here, but we give them a break on membership.” And it’s a strategy that’s been working. “It cost $29 to play a hole in April,” said Weaver. “People come in and they see how nice a course this is.” Of course, membership has its privileges, including exclusive tee-times, a club account and locker, and reciprocal arrange-

ments with other courses, including ones in Ithaca, Delhi and the Mohawk Valley. But Schulte and Weaver both hope that more young people will see that a round of golf is more than just a game. “When you’re out there on the course, you govern yourself,” said Schulte. “You learn integrity and etiquette, and you take those things with you as you grow. You use those skills for life.”

GOLF COURSE REFLECTS FAMILY’S STORY

120TH/From B1 ty,” said Duncan. “Golf was becoming very vogue.” Built as a 12-hole course, it was one of the first designed by Devereux Emmet, a pioneer in the field who is reputed to have developed more than 150 courses, including the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., as well as The Otesaga’s Leatherstocking Golf Course and Meadowbrook. The course was reduced to nine holes in 1907, perhaps, as course biographer Victor Salvatore Jr. speculates, when Mrs. Alfred Cooper Clarke, PellClarke’s aunt, “got sick of golf balls whizzing onto her property.” In 1904, after Pell-Clarke died, Arthur Ryerson took

over as course manager. But in 1912, when his eldest son died in a car crash near Philadelphia while the rest of the family was touring in Europe, the Ryersons took the first available boat back to America – the Titanic. “The rest of the family survived, but Arthur died with all the other guys,”

said Hyde Clarke, a direct descendant of George Hyde Clarke, Hyde Hall’s builder, and great-grandson of the Titanic victim. A resident of New Canaan, Conn., he maintains the family cottage overlooking the course and summers here. Surviving the Titanic, Arthur’s widow, Emily, took over the management, launching a series of luncheons and costume parties to keep the course running through the lean 1930s. After her son Jack took over the course, he opened it to the public in 1942. “It’s a course that’s attainable to the people,” said manager Sarah Stewart. “There’s something very sweet about this place – it’s accessible to women, to youth.” Under Jack Ryerson’s command, the club flourished. But he still managed to find time to play on more than 1,015 different golf courses over 36 years, a feat that landed him in “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” in 1954. The current owner’s

Sarah Stewart points to a memorial marker for golfers William Kernan Jr. and Henry Bowers, killed in a lightning strike in 1893, a year after the Otsego Golf Course opened. The tree that they were hiding bore this marker until it fell 100 years later. Now the marker resides in a place of honor among the historic photos and relics of the course that line the wall of “The

parents – Arthur Ryerson Hyde Clarke Sr. and is wife, Rosanna – took over after Jack retired in 1970, and their son found himself tasked with keeping the greens neat from age 14 on. “I would go out there and mow at 6:30 a.m., before any of the golfers arrived,” he said. When that Arthur Ryerson died in 1986, he had willed that the course be given to the Albany Diocese, but Salvatore, himself a grandson of the Arthur Ryerson who died on the Titanic, the Clarkes and other family and friends raised the money to repurchase the property. And with over 120 years of history, the connections are still being made. Stewart had her first date with Bobby Amore, who now teaches youth golf lessons, on the clubhouse’s back porch after a round of golf. It was a course Amore grew up on. “Kids couldn’t

play at Leatherstocking until after 3 p.m., so I would get dropped off at play at Otsego,” he said. “And afterwards, I’d get a Coke and Hershey bar and sit out on the bench out front, watching the other players come in.” It’s a tradition, he said, he still sees in the kids who play today, and it makes

him smile every time. “The adults don’t treat you like a kid on this course,” he said. “You get out there and you play, and they respect you.” And as the 121st season opens, the mission remains the same. “This club serves the community,” said Stewart. “It’s our goal to make sure that this place is always preserved.”

He was 72. Born April 23, 1942, at Bassett Hospital, Jerry was one of seven children of the late Edith Snyder and Cecil A. Goodspeed. After his education in Cooperstown, he enlisted in the Army National Guard on Nov. 16, 1959, and served with Company C of the 108th Infantry. He received his honorable discharge on Nov. 15, 1962. That same year, he married Georgia Flint on Oct. 6 in a ceremony at the Cooperstown Methodist Church. Through the years, Boo-Boo worked at Stan Wrench Excavating, Bob Mulligan Garbage Disposal & Excavation, and the Village of Cooperstown. From 1970 to 1988, he was the superintendent for the Town of Otsego landfill, and later served as a truck driver with the town highway department, retiring at

Frances and Harold had two sons, Thomas and John, and the family followed the father’s Eastern Airlines’ career to Columbus, Ohio, Birmingham, Mich., and Pittsburgh. He died in 1967 and Frances, the ever devoted mother, raised her sons alone in Pittsburgh and San Diego, before settling back into Pittsburgh for the remainder of her life. She never remarried, but enjoyed family time with her son’s families. She saw all six of her grandchildren grow up and met two of her greatgrandchildren. Frances loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, was a wonderful singer, and her occasional trips to Atlantic City were fun diversions. Given her Cooperstown girlhood, listening to baseball on the radio or watching it on TV was an evening pastime. Both sons survive, Thomas Watson (and former daughter-in-law, Cheryl) and John Watson and Suzanne; grandchildren Thomas (Natalie), Mark, Christopher, Casey, Kelli and Blake; great grandchildren Johnathan, Gabriel and newborn Catherine Gloria Hope. Also, one brother, William R. Kraham and his wife Anne, a sister-in-law, Jane Kraham, and many nieces and nephews from her large family. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, Robert S. Kraham and wife Katherine, Charles Rohan Kraham and wife Mary Ann, Paul M. Kraham and wife Cora, John Carroll Kraham and wife Consuelo, and Richard A. Kraham; and five sisters, Helen Hourigan and husband Edward, Kathryn Grady and husband William, Gertrude Howard and husband Raymond, Mary Farber and husband Sidney, and Madeline. To the Fox Hospital Community:

We are pleased to report the successful completion of our modernization project. To date we have raised over $1.6 million to supplement the $8.7 million state grant to convert our medical/surgical inpatient units to single occupancy private rooms. The project was finished in March and already we are hearing praise and thanks from patients. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of all those listed below. We salute their generosity and sincerely thank each one for ensuring our community hospital continues its history of first-rate care.
