“Isabelle ‌ fed her husband ground glass instead of sugar and watched him die/because she was sick of how bourbon made him mistake her for prey,â€? she wrote in her poem “Wicked Women.â€? Drawing inspiration from family stories her mother told her, Miner, a SUNY Oneonta senior, wrote the

4 County Artists Claim LEAF’s Top Prizes LEAF/From B1 The other top winners were: • Jessica Stoutenburg, Worcester Central art teacher, whose mixed media collage, “Growth,” won grand prize for artwork. • Katie Bobler, 14, Laurens, whose sketch, “From Me to You,” won the under18 category. It depicts an older woman handing the word “Hope” to a young boy. • Steve Ziglar, who re-

cently moved from Boston to Mount Vision, took first place in the adult category with his photograph, “Pink Poppy.” “I’m so moved by all this work,” said Mandigo. “It’s hard to believe there’s evil in this world when there’s just so much good – especially here in this area.” Though Stoutenburg had originally told her art students about the contest, she couldn’t shake the image of her own ideas. “I started

sketching during lunch,” she said. “I was feeling it more than I was thinking about it.” After putting her three children to bed, Stoutenburg spent a week working on the piece until 2 a.m., putting together an image of seeds growing out of life’s troubles. “These seeds help you move past that negativity,” she said. That attitude is prevalent at LEAF, (the Leatherstocking Education

on Alcoholism/Addictions Foundation), said Mandigo. “We had a board meeting just before the show and they all just fell in love with it,” said Mandigo. “It embodies our message so well.” Bobler taught herself to draw faces by studying other artists on Instagram and other websites. “I like to draw people looking at each other,” she said. But the characters in her drawing aren’t modeled on anyone in particular. “It’s how you interpret it in your own life,” she said. “You can get hope from anywhere.” Ziglar dug through a lifetime of photographs taken while working for the New England Wildflower Society. “There was one growing in my backyard and I’d never seen a pink poppy,” he said. “I was fascinated by it. I just made sure it wasn’t the kind of poppy that is used to make heroin.” “Everyone who sees it falls in love with it,” said

Mandigo. So much in love, that when Molly Swain bought, Ziglar donated the proceeds back to LEAF for their next art prize. “Art helps people communicate with each other,” said Mandigo. “It helps us

feel like human beings.” The “High On Life” is moving to the Smithy Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown, where an opening reception was planned 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

M

urals reflecting the daily lives of occupants of 183 Main St., now the Oneonta History Center, dating back to 1866 will soon decorate the Dietz Street side of the building. The Greater Oneonta Historical Society has contracted with artist Carol Mandigo to paint “Windows In Time” above each of the first-floor windows that were brickedin decades ago. “It’s part of the society’s mission to beautify Oneonta and make the society’s

building – and downtown – come alive in a way that honors the history of the community,” said Bob Brzozowski, GOHS executive director. The paintings are due for completion by fall. The first brick building in downtown Oneonta, 183 Main was originally Walter Brown’s hardware store. In the 1870s, it was Wilber Bank’s first Oneonta location. For 30 years, the Laskaris family operated a restaurant, ice cream parlor and candy store. When that moved to Main and Chestnut, the

Laskarises opened Jo-Ann Dress Shop on the site. Most recently, it was the site of Galinn’s Jewelry. Carol Mandigo has a fine arts degree from SUNY Stony Brook University and has been painting murals for years. She co-founded the Catskill Puppet Theater with John Potocnik. Her greatgrandparents owned Winney Hotel on Broad Street in the early 1900s. Donate to the project at www.OneontaHistory.org via PayPal. Checks may be sent to GOHS, Box 814, Oneonta NY 13820; write “mural project” in memo.

Please read it carefully. Mortgage foreclosure is a complex process. Some people may approach you about “saving” your home. You should be extremely careful about any such promises. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. There are government agencies, legal aid entities and other non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about foreclosure while you are working with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANKNYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state. ny.us. New York State tourism award is “What’s On Deck” for the Cooperstown/Otsego County Tourism Board. Apryl Felver, an account executive with Adworkshop, accepted the 2013 Tourism Excellence Award for Economic Development on behalf of the county Tourism Board at the seventh annual “I Love New York” Empire State Tourism Conference Thursday, May 2, at the Conference & Events

Center in Niagara Falls. Deb Taylor, tourism director submitted for the award, writing, “‘What’s On Deck?’ solved a significant problem facing Cooperstownarea businesses: families were traveling from all over the country to participate in summer baseball tournaments … but on days off, they were leaving the county. “The program used QR codes to drive people to a mobile website with agendas for their downtime.”

Friends, Family From 11 States Honored John Thomas Hershey HAMILTON – Mr. John Thomas Hershey died April 15. His wife Lorrie, son Michael, daughter Brittaney, sister Lisa Heinrich and parents Beth and Graham Humes celebrated his life with family and friends at Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, on April 20. He was also honored by his brother Malcolm G. Humes and sisters Meg, Katie, and Lizzie Humes. Allen Bartlo, Dan Heinrich, Kurt Waldenberg, his brothers-in-law, and Lt. Shane Hinton, his son-in-law, were also in attendance. Cousins, nephews and friends came from 11 states to pay tribute to John, who

was loved for his wit and his generous support to all, especially to the younger members of the family. Many John T. Hershey members of his community in Hamilton expressed their love of John, who helped them with chores and sometimes escorted them for the Office of the Aging in Madison County. He also touched the lives of so many in his work on the Colgate University security and events staff. Coaching youths in baseball and

football and playing golf brought John friends among his son Michael’s teammates. He was born March 3 in Greenwich, Conn. In 1986, he graduated from Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pa. College years were spent at Hartwick College in Oneonta and Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa. While living in Cherry Valley, he was president of the Cherry Valley Springwater Co. He was also vice president of the Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce. Donations may be sent in his honor to the Cherry Valley Memorial Library.
