Couple To Reopen Worcester General Store, Downtown Mainstay By JIM KEVLIN WORCESTER

he only full-service market between Cobleskill and Oneonta – its loss was mourned by merchants and shoppers alike in this largely intact Victorian downtown – will soon be back in business. These days, Brian Caulfield, a contractor from New York City – he and his wife, Elizabeth McGuckin, have owned a house here since 1999 – can be found inside the

century-old structure, gutting the former market with the goal of reopening it by mid-July as the Worcester General Store & Market. He kiddingly reported to one of his daughters: “It’s under construction, already behind schedule, and over budget.” But it’s his business, so he doesn’t have to explain it to any boss. The alarm went up in the community in February, when word circulated that Bill Vadja, who owned the business since 2002, Jim Kevlin/ OTSEGO.life had concluded he could no longer continue, a Brian Caulfield is moving wife Elizabeth and their children to Worcester victim of the polar winter. “It was costing me Please See STORE, B2 and reopening the market.

New York City Couple Begins Transforming Worcester Market Back Into General Store STORE/From B1 $100 a day in January, he said at the time. “And people were just not coming out, so I was losing $100 a day just by putting the key in the door. Three community meetings were held, and Vadja was offered assistance, but to no avail. In the end, Caulfield, who had expressed interest in acquiring the market over the past several years, stepped forward and leased the space

from the Worcester Grange, which owns the building. “This is the best! exclaimed Town Supervisor Diane Addesso, who happened by the other day while the new owner was being interviewed. One of Caulfield’s first steps was to remove the drop ceiling on the interior, revealing a varnished wood ceiling, which he intends to preserve. The new owners envision an old-fashioned
