Much of it is ‘60s vintage, featuring garish colors of the day. Much of it is car-related or beerrelated. Matthew, 28, describes his apartment as a man cave, (although given that he’s engaged, who knows for how long.)
And, about a year ago, the two brothers – you may know Jeff as proprietor of Legends Are Forever on Cooperstown’s Main Street – got talking about stuff, and concluded they had a business opportunity. The older brother – upper-30-something – was able to capture the baseball memorabilia craze of the past 20 years. Today, though, baseball items that

used to be available only locally can be obtained via multiple Internet sites. And Cooperstown shirts and hats and other souvenirs can be found at Target and WalMart. “This is much more rare than a Mickey Mantle bat,” said Jeff, surveying such a cornucopia – a Coke button sign, a Mack truck ashtray topped with a small carving of the company’s signature
A couple of years ago, Jeff had rented that wooden building – formerly Diastole furniture – on Route 28 about a half-mile north of Fly Creek’s blinking light, and was using it for storage.

The raised letters – today, they are flush – signify it’s a vintage item. “I picked it up on the side of the road,” he said. The brothers have 1,200 items in all, including 100 neon signs, many displayed against the store’s bare brick wall.

Brothers Have 1,200 Retro Man-Cave Items At Richfield, Fly Creek Sites MAN CAVE/From B3 and looking led to buying. That put the brothers in high gear, scouring tag sales for items that fit their niche. Jeff happened on one yard sale and made the owner an offer for everything, loaded up his pickup and drove off. And the two recognize they have an unusual talent for this. “A lot of people in life have never bought an item with the intention of selling it,” said Matthew. Whenever these two brothers see something they like, even if the owner doesn’t know it’s for sale, they’re unafraid to ask, “Would you sell that to me?” If the answer comes back – “What will you pay for it?” – they know they’ve got a deal. “I’ve got to know what they think it’s worth. I have to know what condition it’s in. I have to know if I can sell it,” the younger sibling said. Antiques might be listed in a catalogue, which sets a price. “With this stuff, you have

Is it a gift?” he asked the customer. “I worked at a bar for 20 years,” she replied. “This was the sign I turned over and on every night.” Matthew concluded, “I gave her something back – what must have been a fond memory.” Such examples underscore, the market is in flux. “I buy stuff, put it in the closet. Two months later it’s worth 20 percent more,” Jeff said. As the stuff continued to pile up, the brothers – the collection amounts to 1,200 items – ran out of space in the Fly Creek building and discovered that renting a first-floor store in The Garfield, one of the blocks renovated by Jay Bernhardt, Richfield Spring’s former redeveloper, was cheaper than renting a storage unit. So, over the winter, after working all day for his brother in Cooperstown, Matthew got to

to have a perceived value.” One day, for example, a woman drove up. “I want to buy that sign,” she said, pointing at a Busch neon sign. “I’m thinking to myself,” said Matt, “what should I charge?” $145, he concluded, seat of the

The temptation was to harvest stuff from throughout Central New York and sell it online. For instance, a Coke button sign will sell $150 out of the store, but can bring $250-300 if sold through the Web. While 75 people may go through a store on a given day, a Web site can easily get 1,000 hits. Still, the Fosters are people people. They want to engage customers, to describe their stuff, perhaps even to dicker. Besides, “no one wants to sit behind a monitor all day,” Matthew said. Both brothers say they were inspired their love of man cave memorabilia by their father. For Matthew, it goes back to his first Christmas, when dad James, now 73, of Youngstown, Ohio, bought him a train set. Youngstown is home to the

Last summer, he took the book on the road for signings and readings all along the famed highway. “Poisoned Pairings” welcomes back “Deadly Draught” sleuth and brewery owner Hera Knightsbridge to solve the murder of a student hired to set up for a beer-andfood-pairing dinner. In solving the case, Hera has to confront religious leaders, grieving families and a gas company bent on fracking the But-
ternuts Valley Diehl calls home. “A lot of my friends are trying to read it as a political statement,” she said. “All I’m trying to do is write a mystery. An author wants her book to be judged on the basis of the writing, not the political agenda.” Though not one for outlines, Diehl admits she might have to construct one for her next novel, which she says will be a black-humor murder mystery. “Someone asked me how I remembered all the plot twists and turns, but I’ve gotten pretty good at it – I don’t think I’ve left any loose threads.” To promote her work, Diehl’s been discussing, signing and giving interviews with various writing blogs. “If
someone asked me if they could interview me for a letter to their mother, I’d do it!” she joked. On Thursday, May 10, she gave a talk at the Village Library of Cooperstown on the business of mystery writing. “Someone always asks if there’s a lot more small publishers, and the answer is yes and no – there are a lot of small presses, but a lot of them are going under. You just can’t predict.” The other question she gets is how to become a writer. “I tell them you’ve got to write and write and keep writing – that’s what keeps the creative juices flowing.” “There are times when I feel down in the dumps,” she confided. “But I do feel really optimistic. I love my characters. I love being a writer. I love what I do. There’s no other choice – I’m going to keep going down this road.”

Much of what’s swapped is auto related, and Matthew’s first car, his father’s 1965 GTO – Hugger Orange and Plum Crazy – “made me feel part of a club.” He got a business degree from Kent State, then spent a couple of years as a tech with 3D Vision in Solon, Ohio. His brother Jeff, 12 years older and a graduate of Rome Catholic High, had been on the Cooperstown retail scene since 1992, and the younger man soon joined him. It’s uncanny to see the two together: Two sides of a doubledheaded coin. Matt looks up to Jeff, and Jeff takes pride in Matt’s accomplishments and merchandising derring-do. “People look at it as a business,” said Jeff. “But, in the end, it’s what fills up the time and makes you happy.” Matthew concurred.

After a two-year hiatus, Oneonta Advanced EMT Brian Knapp, right, and Oneonta Fire Chief Patrick Pidgeon, center, underwent training to become state fire instructors, and Saturday, May 12, they presided at the graduation of 33 firefighters who had undergone 89 hours of training over the past six months. The grads presented Knapp, Pidgeon and state Fire Instructor Jeff Schoeber, Worcester, who assisted in the instruction, with this trophy, built from memorabilia of their time together. The ceremony occurred at The Depot Restaurant, Oneonta, and included volunteers from around Otsego County.

ONEONTA – William John Yates, 84, an anti-war and civil rights activist, passed away on May 9, 2012, in his native Oneonta. After serving 1943-46 in the Navy, he began his college career, becoming an assistant professor of English Bill Yates at SUNY Buffalo, then a counselor at SUNY Brooklyn. Aside from his passion for literature, poetry and the English language, his greatest contributions were in civil rights, labor rights and justice for people. An early civil rights activist with the original Congress on Racial Equality, Yates was in the heat of the movement registering voters and spreading literacy in the Deep South and Louisiana. The Ku Klux Klan hung him in effigy, and he was repeatedly beaten for working on behalf of impoverished blacks. He went back to the SUNY Buffalo campus as a student and became active in the resistance against the Vietnam War. The organizer of the Students for a Democratic Society, Yates and other protesters holed up in the Elmwood Avenue Unitar-

When U.S. marshals, FBI agents and Buffalo police stormed the church, they used blackjacks on the protesters and arrested Yates and eight others for draft evasion and assaulting an officer. Bill was convicted at what became known as the “Buffalo Nine” trial, where he was also cited for contempt of court for refusing to stand when the judge entered. He served three years in prison. After his release, he returned to SUNY Brooklyn, helping inner city youth. He retired and moved back to his hometown of Oneonta, where he spent his last years writing poetry, working out at the YMCA with his friends and rallying against the invasion of Iraq. He was deeply admired by many people who say he changed their lives. He was married to Patricia Gallagher, Oneonta, and they had two children, Gloria Casey of Venice, Fla., and Su Yates of Honolulu, Hawaii. He was re-married in 1966, to Ruth Wells and they had a son, Eric Yates of Holbrook. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lindsey and Drew O’Connell and Sean Maka’iolani Yates. A celebration of his life was held on May 11, 2012, at the Green Toad Bookstore, Oneonta.

EAST SPRINGFIELD – Homer O. Fassett, 91, the oldest family member in the area and author of “Homer’s Book,” a history of the historic farm where Fassetts lived for generations, passed away at home May 13, 2012, following a long illness. He was born July 19, 1920, at the family homestead in East Springfield, son of Owen and Iva (Richards) Fassett. He graduated from the East Springfield Union School in 1939. Homer worked for his father on the farm and for the Fassett Farm Machinery, purchasing the dealership from his father in 1948. He operated the dealership until he sold it to his son in 1984. He and brothers Kermit and Myron continued repairing Case balers after his retirement. For decades, he was very active in his family’s maple syrup business, and longtime residents remember him retrieving sap buckets in late winter on a horse-drawn sled from his sugarbush on Van Alstine Road. In summers, he could be seen splitting wood in preparation for the next season. Sugaring ceased in 2000, after 90 years, but this past season, when he remarked he would like to see sugaring underway again, family members and volunteers tapped trees and boiled off sap for his enjoyment. He was a charter member of the Springfield Fire Department, which merged in 1946 from the Springfield

Center and East Springfield companies, and he remained active as a firefighter, then with the fire police, until recent years. He was seventh-degree Granger and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield. He enjoyed hunting deer and turkeys, fishing with his friends in Canada, and traveling with his family. Summer found him weeding his garden or working with his beautiful flowers. Survivors include his wife Evelyn Huntley Lundholm Fassett, son Loren (Beth), sister Velma Armstrong, brothers Kenneth (Julia), Kermit (Irene), Myron (Madeline), grandchildren Terry (Jodi), Mary, Scott (Andrea), great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Leola Styles Fassett, brother Ervin, sisters Erma (Leland) Vunk and Dorothy (Farron) Benjamin, and a step-daughter Ruth Lundholm. Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Ottman Funeral Home, with services at 11 a.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or Springfield Fire Department, P O Box 358, Springfield Center, NY 13468. Sheldon “Terby” TerBush Jr., 82; Member Of First Oneonta High School Ski Team ONEONTA – Sheldon “Terby” TerBush Jr., 82, a member of the first Oneonta High School ski team, passed away on May 9, 2012. Terby was born on March 6, 1930, in Oneonta, son of Sheldon TerBush Sr. and Dorothy Doster TerBush. He graduated from Oneonta Senior High School in
1948, where he played football, basketball, tennis and track, and skied. On June 3, 1951, he married Elizabeth ”Betty” Michaels in Cooperstown. They were married for 60 years and raised three children. He was the co-owner and operator of the Oneonta Dairy Queen
with his daughter, Ellen, and also worked with his son at Craig TerBush Builders. He was a volunteer member of The National Ski Patrol for 38 years, serving at Scotch Valley and Plattekill. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and golf outings, and was a member of Laurens Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Craig TerBush and his wife Connie, and David TerBush and his wife Sue; one daughter, Ellen Schmitt and her husband Peter; granddaughters and great-granddaughters, brother-inlaw and sister-in-law Charles and Barbara Michaels, and a nephew, niece and their children, and a

Oneonta Native Bill Yates, 84; Civil Rights, Anti-War Activist, Tried With ‘Buffalo 9’
Bill Yates
ONEONTA – William John Yates, 84, an anti-war and civil rights activist, passed away on May 9, 2012, in his native Oneonta. After serving 1943-46 in the Navy, he began his college career, becoming an assistant professor of English at SUNY
Buffalo, then a counselor at SUNY Brooklyn. Aside from his passion for literature, poetry and the English language, his greatest contributions were in civil rights, labor rights and justice for people. An early civil rights activist with the original Congress on
Racial Equality, Yates was in the heat of the movement registering voters and spreading literacy in the Deep South and Louisiana. The Ku Klux Klan hung him in effigy, and he was repeatedly beaten for working on behalf of impoverished blacks.

He went back to the SUNY Buffalo campus as a student and became active in the resistance against the Vietnam War. The organizer of the Students for a Democratic Society, Yates Bill was convicted at what became known as the “Buffalo Nine” trial, where he
was also cited for contempt of court for refusing to stand when the judge entered. He served three years in prison. After his released, he returned to SUNY Brooklyn, helping inner city youth. He retired and moved back to his hometown of Oneonta.
