it after retiring Bassett President/CEO Bill Streck, who has served as chairman of the Pathfinder board since 1995. Streck is retiring July 1 as president/CEO of the Bassett Healthcare Network after 30 years. He will continue to chair the Pathfinder board. Streck joined Bassett in 1978 as a physician, two years before the founding of Pathfinder Village an Streck an open-access planned community for people living with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. In announcing the new clinic, Pathfinder CEO Paul C. Landers praised Streck’s contribution to the region’s healthcare: During his 30 years at the helm, the standalone Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital grew into an eightcounty system that includes five satellite hospitals, 32 community clinics, and 19 school-based clinics. “His service and vision at Pathfinder have also blazed a trail for better care, opportunities and outcomes for individuals living with developmental disabilities,” said Landers. Last month, the Pathfinder board approved building the 3,800-square-foot community health center, to be located on Route 80 next to the community soccer field at Pathfinder Village. The Pathfinder Village Foundation will begin fundraising immediately for the facility, which will be named the Dr. William F. Streck Community Health Clinic. Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2015. Bassett will operate the new facility, which will replace the current EdmestonBurlington Clinic, which dates back to 1973. “Its success in community-based care was a springboard for all subsequent clinics,” said Edmeston native and business leader William Cole, who is chair of the Pathfinder foundation. “Since that time,” he said, “there’s been a growing need for practitioners in rural areas, an aging demographic, and greater demands for healthcare support services. Simply put, a larger, modern facility in Edmeston will exponentially improve the quality of care.” Final plans for the new clinic are being developed by the Village of Edmeston officials, Bassett staff, and architect Norman Davies,

COOPERSTOWN’S SPRING FLING
Hands on her hips, Maggie Heavner, 3, seems like a bit of a critic listening to the Small Town Big Band at the Cooperstown Rotary Club’s Spring Fling, which filled Railroad Avenue between Chestnut Street and the former Agway for most of the afternoon Saturday, May 17. But Maggie was tapping her toe to the beat. In left photo, Johnny Kirley, 8, as his pal, Wyatt Huston, Cooperstown, looks on, tentatively touches the Burma python brought to the Spring Fling by the Utica Zoomobile. The snake was a big hit with the younger set. The Rotarian who chaired the organizing committee, Tabetha Rathbone, said, “from what I’ve heard, it was a resounding success. Many of the vendors sold out,” including Tickled Pink Barbecue and Gene Marra’s Lobster Rolls. The Laurens Jaguars had to run over to Spurbeck’s Grocery to restock their hot dogs. Fortyeight vendors participated in the first-time event, Rathbun said.

This meeting was also open to members of a young-professional group being organized by Citizen Voices. In the pursuit of deadlines and goals, Oehl said, many young professionals fail to notice their own anxiety levels and challenges.

You have a way of thinking that isn’t productive for you. But the good news, she said, is that new neuropathways can be learned. “Our brains are very plastic and malleable, she said. The first step, she said, is to breathe from your belly. “The perfect breath lasts six seconds, she said. “Ten

For Meles, Hartwick All In The Family QUADS/From B1 Grace, Bobby and Danny all traveled from Long Island to tour the school – Erin had to work – and the two boys also liked what they saw. “We didn’t just like it, said Danny. “We loved it. Bobby and Danny applied by early decision, and Erin and Grace applied soon after. “Grace didn’t want us going to school with her, said Bobby, grinning. “She was so mad. The four are set to graduate on Saturday, May 24. Grace majored in biology/ pre-med, Danny in business with a music minor, Bobby in nursing, and Erin in sociology and criminal justice. Having four siblings on campus wasn’t something Hartwick officials had seen before. A scheduling error meant Bobby and Grace accidentally ended up in each other’s freshman-year composition classes, and Erin and Grace broke a few hearts in the first weeks. “This group of football players came into the dining hall and asked about us, said Grace. “They hoped we were four girls! The four never lived together all at once, but in their junior year, Erin and Danny got approval from the college to room together. “Normally co-ed dorms are for married students, said Danny. “They had never made an exception for siblings! But they didn’t always run in a pack. “That’s part of the college experience, meeting new people, said Erin. Still, having three siblings on campus meant someone always had your back. “I was working with campus safety and I heard a call about a Jeep with South Carolina plates, said Erin. “I said, ‘That’s Danny’s, give him a ticket.’ I was mad at him. But it turns out they saw a grenade in the back of his car and they were about to call the bomb squad! Danny explains, “It was
a hollowed-out World War II grenade I’d bought as a paperweight. It had been in the cupholder for years. I’d forgotten about it. Grace explained this to the officers and got Danny out of trouble. In four years, the quads have been to six different countries; in J-Term 2013, each sibling was in a different part of the globe. “I was in Jamaica, Erin was in London, Danny was in Italy, and Grace was in Spain, said Bobby. In 2012, Grace traveled to South Africa, and Bobby studied abroad in Peru. “I got salmonella and a parasite, he said. “I texted my sister in Africa, convinced I was dying. I think they all thought I was stranded
in a tent in the jungle, but I actually had amazing healthcare. The four will return home to Setauket, on Long Island, for the summer before parting ways for graduate programs. Bobby is headed to the children’s hospital at UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C.; Erin is awaiting the results of the NYPD exam, Danny is looking for a music internship in Manhattan, and Grace is heading to SUNY at Old Westbury to start medical school. And one day, they say, they hope to be successful enough to give back to the college. “We can donate a little garden, said Danny. “They can call it the Mele Quad.

IN MEMORIAM Arthur Bean of Franklin, 81; Owner of Art’s Marine Sales Raced Powerboats ONEONTA – Arthur Bean of Franklin, 81, who operated Art’s Marine Sales in Oneonta for almost three decades, died peacefully on May 16, 2014. He prepared for death the same way he lived his life: with courage, love for his family and his trademark dry sense of humor. Arthur was born in Boston, on Feb. 15, 1933, the only child of Harry and Marjorie Short Bean. He was a National Guardsman and then an MP
in Panama during the Korean War. Later, he joined his father in Bean Bros., a bowling Arthur Bean pin manufacturing business in Walton. In the 1960s, he raced power boat, and he opened Art’s in 1971, selling boats and snowmobiles until his retirement in 1999.
