nly 14, Sierra Jones is quite an achiever. A sophomore at Franklin Central School, she plays varsity soccer and indoor soccer. She’s involved in band, chorus, jazz band, yearbook and the Big Buddy program. She’s in the Junior Honor Society, and aims to be in the National Honor Society by this
time next year. Her plan is to study business and financial management at SUNY Delhi, transferring after two years to a four-year program elsewhere, and she’s tending a flock of 200 chickens, selling 55 dozen eggs a week to Handsome Brook Farm, and putting aside $1,000 a year toward her college tuition. With all of this aspiration, you can see how she’d fit right in with Betsy and Bryan Babcocks’ Handsome Brook Farm, a fast-growing Please See EGGS, B3

ilford Junior Francesca Green saw a problem and decided to take action – with her camera.
“I was really disturbed by all the bullying,” she said. “Teachers tell us not to bully, they get programs, but it all just becomes white noise. (Bullies) don’t respond to adults, but I thought they might respond to a peer.” Over two months, she made a four-minute film “It Starts Now,”
featuring 83 students, from grade school through senior high, addressing the camera straight on with stories of bullying and calls to action. On Friday, May 18, Francesca was awarded an honorable mention at the Rod Serling Video Festival in Binghamton, one of only 11 win-
ners statewide. Using blunt, short lines dialogue and careful repetition of key phrases, Green allowed the faces to tell the story, rather than rely on numbers and statistics. “These anti-bullying programs throw so many statistics at us,” she lamentPlease See FILM, B5

To Start, Babcocks Planted Blueberries
EGGS/From B1 producer of free-range chicken eggs and organic blueberries, whose owners have quarter-century business experience as serial achievers. The Babcocks’ latest venture grew – to say by happenstance doesn’t give them enough credit – out of the couple’s Handsome Brook B&B, which they opened along the so-named creek in 2006 when Bryan
was anticipating seeking a second Ph.D. at NYU. Just six years later, the B&B’s spinoff company is selling organic blueberry jam in 40 Hannaford and Price Choppers throughout New York State. From their own small flock and under contract with nine other farmers, Handsome Brook Farm is distributing 1,000 dozen eggs a week through the regional supermarket chains and local outlets like
Oneonta’s Green Earth. “Bryan and I have always been entrepreneurial,” said Betsy in an interview that went from the livingroom addition of their 1830 farmhouse – the original Chestnut floorboards are a foot wide, some a bit more, some less – to 15 leased acres on a hillside across the road. To listen to their stories make that sound like a bit of an understatement. The two met at Trinity
University in San Antonio, Texas, in the 1980s, where both were studying for masters in hospital administration. They soon married. He became a CEO with Charter Medical Group, working at hospitals from Savannah, Ga., to Denver; she joined Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. By the time they met, Betsy, raised in Chester in northern California, had already gotten her bachelor’s from Wake Forest and her first master’s, in educa-
tion from the University of Florida. By 1991, she had joined Galichia Medical Group, which during her tenure opened Kansas’ first cardiac-catheter hospital and a similar clinic in Italy. Raised in Austin, Bryan had already received a bachelor’s from the University of Texas there. By 1996, he left Charter to found an electronic stocktracking firm, Insight Capital Management, to conduct day-trading. He sold it in 2003 and it is now part of

Reuters. He continued his education, obtaining two masters – in Old Testament studies from Denver Seminary and theology from Trinity International – and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern studies and theology via Bristol University in England. In 2005, Betsy took a year off to work for a church in suburban Chicago – both are Christians; “it’s an important part of our lives,” she said – and over the course of the year got Please See EGGS, B4

Applying Big-Business Lessons Locally EGGS/From B3 in on the ground floor with Celergo Global Payroll. At the time, the company had nine employees; today, it has more than 100 and, with offices in the U.S. and three other countries, provides payroll services to multi-nationals in 110 countries. And the Babcocks raised a daughter, Lindsey, now a teacher in North Carolina. Pause. Catch your breath. In 2006, with Bryan considering another Ph.D., at NYU, the Babcocks ranged the countryside within three hours of New York City, looking for a vacation home/base of operations. With the Internet, Betsy realized she could perform her Celergo duties anywhere. When realtor Frank Lumia showed them “this one, we knew immediately it was what we wanted. As you may have guessed by now, any setting is a launching pad for the Babcocks’ curiosity and energy. Or, as Bryan put it, “It’s really exciting to see a need in the community – doing something you’re passionate about that also fills a community need. Soon, Bryan set aside his NYU plans and joined Hartwick College’s Religious Studies Department, teaching courses on theology and on the Near East. Betsy fulfilled a delayed desire: She planted something. Blueberries, alongside of the house – “They didn’t need much care, and they did
well. She made her own blueberry jam, and the B&B guests loved it. One day, shopping at Hannaford on Oneonta’s Southside, she engaged the produce manager in conversation, and was soon over the first obstacle: Finding an advocate in the local outlet. Soon, she was talking to Wendy Ward, who managed the Portland-based chain’s Close to Home program. Later that year, Bryan recruited Hartwick students to plant 4,000 plants over three weekends – first blueberries, then raspberries, then strawberries. (The latter two crops turned out to be less hardy, so the Babcocks focused on blueberries.) There were several other obstacles to overcome. The Babcocks had to prove they were “financially viable. They had to undergo NOFA certification, ensuring the jam was organic, and a USDA GAP audit, demonstrating “good agricultural practices. “It’s a six-month to a year process, said Bryan. They then expanded to Price Chopper. The Babcocks refitted the B&B kitchen, turning out 12 jars at a batch. (Today, batches – prepared by a custom bottler discovered by an exhaustive search – comprise 1,000 jars each.) While this was going on, Bryan said, the couple was asking, “What needs are out there? What do we like and what can we do? They were serving their
own free-range-chicken eggs to Handsome Brook B&B guests, who kept remarking: The yolks are richer. The whites are firmer. Some took a few dozen home. Said Betsy, “You couldn’t find a pasture-raised, freerange egg in a supermarket. The eggs “look different, and they taste phenomenal. But how do we meet the demand? Do we become a large-scale farmer? “The second way was to partner, said Bryan. They contracted with four farmers along Handsome Brook; Sierra is one of them, with dad George, mom Joanna and brother Josh assisting as necessary. And with their own 15 chickens – the Babcocks’ flock went from 15 to 50 to 100, then back to 15 – some 300-dozen are sent to market weekly; the providers wash and box the eggs, and the Babcocks inspect and date-stamp them. The other five partner/ farmers are around Upstate. They process 700-dozen, which are washed and boxed at a central point and delivered to Hannaford, Price Choppers and private grocers. All the eggs are from free-range birds; some are non-organic; customers have a choice of a more-expensive organic line, too. As you might suspect, this isn’t the end. The Babcocks are only in their 40s. “One of things Bryan and I have talked about is to develop a business where
THURSDAY-FRIDAY, MAY 31 - JUNE 1, 2012 we are actually a brokerage firm, Betsy said. The firm would run a commercial kitchen, a processing plant and a distribution warehouse to serve small beef farmers, produce growers and artisanal cheesemakers
the way the supermarkets do with large-scale contract farmers. Whenever she and Bryan drive past Cobleskill on I-88, they see that complex on the east side of the highway and wonder, what if? “We always have a fan-
tasy of something happening there, she said. Bryan estimates such a brokerage operation would cost $1.5-2 million. It would take perhaps two years to put such an undertaking together.

“Great songwriters, like the best artists in any discipline, defy convention and confound those who seek comparisons. Toronto’s Jon Brooks stands among an exalted few in the enduring Canadian song tradition – Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn – as a lyricist, composer and performer with a fierce commitment to his craft and his vision. He’s proud to call himself a folksinger at a time when that particular f-word has ceased to have much meaning to armies of wannabe artists seeking little more than ordinary fame and glory. -Greg Quill , The Toronto Star

Milford Teen’s Bullying Film Wins Prize FILM/From B1 ed. “People stop paying attention.” Francesca went through the hallways of Milford and asked people to be in her film, seeking out an equal mix of boys and girls, elementary, middle and high school. “Little kids love seeing themselves on TV,” she said. “And if people are involved, they’re more willing to tell people, ‘Hey, check out the movie I’m in,’ and without knowing it, they’ll spread the word.” In addition to confronting difficult and often disturbing subject matter, the filming had its own sets of challenges. “I filmed 83 lines and captured it on the computer – but it didn’t have any audio,” she said. “The second time I used the wrong camera, so I had to film it a third time.” “It Starts Now” played on Wildcat TV, and has had over a 1,000 hits in six days on youtube.com. “I’ve had a really great response from everyone in the school and in the community,” she said. Now an award-winning filmmaker, Francesca plans to enter her video in other contests in hopes of getting the word out and inviting other schools to make their own versions of her script. “My goal with this video is for other schools to use it,” she said. “I wrote the script to get people’s
attention, and faces being recognized is a way of doing that.” Francesca also started an anti-bullying club at school, and is active in the Cancer Awareness Club and the Environmental Club. She even wanted to participate in this year’s Polar Bear Jump, she was away that weekend and decided instead to make a symbolic plunge in solidarity. “I felt like it was something I had to do,” she said. “So
I helped break the ice and jumped into a friend’s lake. It was freezing!” Though not planning to pursue a career in filmmaking, Francesca does hope to use her talents to study International Affairs, particularly gender equality and women’s rights. But for now, she hopes to make change in her own community. “Everyone’s been bullied before,” she said. “Someone needed to step up.”
