Pop, Pop – The Sweet Sound Of Success Synenkis’ Gourmet-Popcorn Business Booming, Assuring Couple Of A Comfortable Retirement By JIM KEVLIN LITTLE FALLS

Y

ou may recognize Mike Synenki as that pleasant and helpful man behind the counter at Cooperstown’s Stewart’s. Behind that mild-manJim Kevlin/ OTSEGO.seniority nered exterior is an energized entrepreneur who, Elsie and Mike Synenki pack a display case with with his wife Elsie, is Mom & Pop’s Homestyle popcorn, a sideline to turning what was a hobby their regular jobs that has taken off.

– “something we did to relax” – into a much-herald, multi-flavored gourmet popcorn business, brandnamed Mom & Pop’s Homestyle. Mike calls what happened “a perfect storm” – not the disastrous “Perfect Storm” of the George Clooney movie, but a perfect storm of positive happenstance, one good thing after another that has propelled the Synenkis’ enterprise forward.

Now, Mike and Elsie see Mom & Pop’s Homestyle as a perfect retirement business once his career at Stewart’s winds up. The first positive happenstance came about this time three years ago. One afternoon at their home on Southern Avenue, which lines the north side of the Mohawk River in this small city, Elsie was eating a batch of air-popped popcorn and Mike was making Please See POPCORN, B4

“Great songwriters, like the best artists in any discipline, defy convention and confound those who seek comparisons. Toronto’s Jon Brooks stands among an exalted few in the enduring Canadian song tradition – Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn – as a lyricist, composer and performer with a fierce commitment to his craft and his vision. He’s proud to call himself a folksinger at a time when that particular f-word has ceased to have much meaning to armies of wannabe artists seeking little more than ordinary fame and glory.” -Greg Quill , The Toronto Star

Thriving Popcorn Business Makes Retirement Look Brighter POPCORN/From B1 a batch of dill pickles. “Elsie, try this,” said the husband, and he sprinkled dill flavoring on the popcorn. “Oh, gee,” she replied, “this isn’t too bad.” The couple whipped up a batch, labelled it “Dilli-licious,” and offered it to the Community Co-op, the local natural food outlet.

“They started selling it faster and faster” – a dozen bags the first week, then two dozen, then three dozen, said Mike. “We couldn’t believed it was selling that well.” At the city’s Canal Days in early August of that year, the Synenkis set up a table outside their home. Before long, “people were just herding around the table

– wow!” said Elsie. The Synenkis began experimenting with other flavors – barbecue, garlic herb, cheddar, sea salt, chicken wing, salt and vinegar; today they are offering 27. And stores started requesting their product; today, they have today dozen outlets, including Mary’s Pantry in Schuyler Lake, the Fly Creek General Store

and, in Oneonta, Sunrise PRN at 420 Chestnut St. Sunrise is a medical equipment vendor, but the owner liked the gourmet popcorn’s qualities – Mom & Pop’s Homestyle is comfort food, heathily air-popped and low cost – and asked to sell it. After six months, the plastic bins where the product is stored were piled so high in the couple’s Southern Avenue home Elsie was getting claustrophobia. The couple moved the business to a former children’s clothing store, then to its current location in a former flour warehouse a brother-in-law of Mike’s owns on West Main Street. With the help of friends, the Synenkis portioned off a section of the building to the state health inspector’s satisfaction, and set up a production line and an office. Elsie handles production – she can do 500 bags in a day; Mike handles the bookkeeping, ordering and deliveries. The company is growing at a rate of 6 percent a year. “Everybody’s got a

dollar or two for a nice big bag of healthy popcorn,” said Mike. It’s a comfortable pace of growth for the Synenkis, despite would-be investors who envision the company growing faster and spreading nationwide. “We’re trying to keep it an artisan product,” said Mike. “We’re not here to mass-produce. We want it to be a healthy food, locally made, for higher end stores.” All the ingredients are natural; many of the spices are from a similar mom-and-pop company in Ohio, but the Synenkis have ordered from as far away at California, where they found the purest and most potent caramel available. Now married 40 years, the couple met at the Savron Restaurant in the Indian Castle Rest Area on the state Thruway. She, 16, was working in the kitchen; he, 19, was a porter. “Most guys flirt,” said Elsie, but Mike was different: “He was just quiet all the time.” That was then. He studied hospitality at Morrisville

Ag & Tech, later obtaining a management degree through Empire State College. Both worked in various aspects of the restaurant trade. But it was three years selling advertising on restaurant placemats throughout Upstate New York and Vermont that brought him out of his shell. Today, he’s fearless about approaching merchants he believes would benefit from his product. The couple has two sons, Craig, 35, who repairs tractor-trailers, and Brian, 31, who is on the Springer’s sales team in Richfield Springs. The couple has three grandchildren. The Synenkis are so delighted by the way their company is growing, they want to give back as much as they can. They provide popcorn at cost for local schools’ fundraisers and other community events. “We do it because we want to be known as a local, caring company,” said Mike. Mom & Pop’s Homestyle is also getting known for quality. One of the company’s vendors is The Barge Inn in Hamilton, home of Colgate University. When the college was putting together baskets of local products for VIPs at graduation time, the Synenkis’ gourmet popcorn was one of the items. Just the other day, the product passed muster with the state Department of Ag & Markets’ “Pride of New York” program – the Good Housekeeping Seal equivalent for this state’s farm products – and the Synenkis are affixing the signature green labels to the popcorn bags. Looking back, the two entrepreneurs see a certain inevitability in their success, everything’s gone so smoothly. “This business, from Day One, has told us where we should go, what to do and how to do it,” said Mike. “I firmly believe this was meant to be.”

Pyramidal-Shaped Hops Barn Concentrating Drying Process HOPS/From B1 only thing that was left were nails, and from them, we were able to tell how far apart the slats were and how thick they’d been.” In 1856, three million pounds of hops were farmed locally and sent to Pittsburgh, New York City and Chicago. Jim Clark, who ran “Hop City” outside of Cooperstown, produced such clean hops that “they could be sold to the English,” said hops expert Al Bullard, Milford, the retired Cooperstown High School history teacher who helped curate the exhibit, as well as the hops exhibit at The Farmers’ Museum. “I’m the largest holder of 19th century sulfur in the country,” he said, holding up a cake of yellow sulfur, used to keep pests away from the drying hops. “My wife found a whole bucket of this.” Bullard found most of the tools, including the “Go Devil” cultivator and the hop duster, at various antique shows. The kiln on display was built in the 1860s. “It was high tech,” said Ron Jennings. “This one isn’t the original, but it was built in Cobleskill for another similar house.” The hop master was in charge of keeping the fire burning, maintaining the temperature at between 120

and 160 degrees. “He was committed,” Jennings said. “He even had a bed built under the stairs so he could be close by.” After the hops were dry, they were pressed and baled to be sold. The Beardslee hop house didn’t have much room for storage, Jennings said, so the bales must have been sold quickly. “Prices ranged from 10 cents to a dollar a pound,” he said. “They could have earned $6,000 a year.” The hop harvest was a communal event, featuring banquets and dances with women picking and men operating the machinery, Jennings said. Men and women were paid the same wages, and a diary from that time chronicles the women’s plans to go into town and shop with the 50 cents a bin they earned. “Hops were a good cash crop.” “People would leave their jobs in the textile industry to go pick hops,” said Jennings. “It paid better.” Local hop farming collapsed overnight in 1919 with Prohibition, but there’s been a resurgence with the rise in popularity of microbreweries in the past decade. “All the microbreweries in the area want fresh, organic hops,” he said. “We don’t celebrate our hop history the way we should,” said Bullard.

HOMETOWN ONEONTA

250 Friends Celebrate Life Of Bill Swain, 88; Educator, Storyteller ONEONTA – Bill Swain’s friends and admirers – more than 250 – filled the Unitarian Universalist Society to overflowing Sunday, June 3, to celebrate the life of the retired SUNY Oneonta education professor, lover of the outdoors and of people, and a teller of tales who sustained the former Oneonta Storytelling Center for 35 years. William Alexander Swain III had died at home Monday, May 28, 2012, under the care of his wife of 60 years, Molly Myrus Swain Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Asheville, N.C. to Frances O. and William A. Swain, Jr. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and trained as a fighter pilot, lieutenant junior grade. He received a B.S. in 1951 from Duke University. He worked at Lake Delaware Boys Camp during the summer of 1949, where he met his future wife, Molly Ann, daughter of Adolph A. and Marjorie Steere Myrus of Oneonta. They were married on Sept. 5, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church. Swain received a master’s in education from the University of North Carolina and a second master’s in education from SUNY Oneonta. He taught at Bugbee School, then at Chestnut Street School. In 1959, he accepted a Fulbright Exchange position to teach in England. Upon his return, he became principal of Chestnut Street and Plains schools. He spent the summers of 1962 and 1963 on a teacher training program with Operations Crossroads Africa in West Africa. In 1964 he spent two years in Mpwapwa, Tanzania on the USAID program, Teachers for East Africa. Returning to the U.S., he taught at SUNY Geneseo. In 1967 he began a Ph.D. at Teachers College, Columbia University, which he completed in 1975. In 1969, he started supervising student teachers at SUNY Oneonta. He retired in 1994. He helped found the Susquehanna Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Storytelling Center, and was a leader at the Unitarian Universalist Society. In addition to his wife, survivors include brothers David and Joe, sister Sally Mull; sons William and wife Margaret, John, Peter and his wife Claudia, and son Michael’s wife, Jennifer;
