Artist Bobby Sharp Pursues Inspiration In Glassmaking GLASS/From B1 make the baseball now, but we’d make a pre-mold once we get it,” he said. “We could do the red stitching on the baseball.” He’s also hoping to eventually develop logo glassware for the distillery. “We’ll give him what he wants,” said Sharp. “He’s the boss.” Discount Liquors in Oneonta has also taken a liking to Sharp and Morales’ work, with two of their colorful long-stemmed wineglasses currently available for purchase at the store. It takes Morales, who has known Bobby for 15 years, about an hour to make a wine glass. He quickly

Catskill Community Players’ production of “The Hallelujah Girls,” a comedy with rave reviews by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, will be directed by Gary Koutnik. Food provided by Brooks’ BBQ. “Hilarity abounds when the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia decide to shake up their lives. The action in this rollicking Southern comedy takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH, the abandoned church-turned-day-spa where a group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. After the loss of a dear friend, the women realize time is precious, and if they’re going to change their lives and achieve their dreams, they have to get on it now!” For Tickets, call Foothills at 607-431-2080.

Brent Leonard, Carefree Gardens co-owner with wife Mary, and father of Origins Café owners Kristin and Dana Leonard, was part of the mission group, and volunteered his space to host the first dinner in 2011. “We like to help any way we can,” said Kristin. Though fresh flowers may have adorned tables in the Titanic’s Olympic Restaurant and the First Class Saloon, they weren’t as fresh – or as fragrant – as the greenhouse’s citrus trees and orchids surrounding each table. The simple rum syrup in the fruit salad was almost sweeter than the chocolate painted éclairs at the end of the meal, and the Chicken Lyonnaise, drizzled with a red wine and onion sauce, was so tender, no knife was needed to cut it. Though Mary Iverson played modern pop tunes on her guitar, one could almost imagine hearing the lapping of the waves outside the café’s open windows. running the Otsego Golf Club (and lived in the estate across Route 80), perished in the wreck, as did Ron Jex’s great uncle, William Alexander, who was immigrating to the U.S. More than 50 diners turned out for the event. “I came to support the group and eat delicious food,” said Rev. Elsie Rhodes. “They’re all wonderful cooks, and it’s a great way to get people involved.” Jex, Cooperstown General Store manager, and his wife, Martha, who operates Ellsworth & Sill, both dressed in period-specific clothing; she in a white silk blouse, long skirt and velvet hat, he in a tuxedo. “It’s fun to get dressed up for dinner,” she said. Only two menus from the Titanic survived the sinking, and some of the dishes, including the Potage Saint Germain (spring pea soup) and Macedoine de Frits (fruit salad) were on the April 14, 1912, menu. The nine courses, served buffet-style, were made by members of the church from the “Last Dinner On the Titanic” cookbook. Susan Jones, a co-hostess of the dinner, made the Roast Sirloin of Beef Forestiere, the asparagus and the Chicken Lyonnaise. “Don’t worry,” joked David Svahn, the retired physician summering here from his new home in Doylestown, Pa., as he got in line. “I think we still have a few hours until we hit that iceberg.”

Dr. Fred Jaretzi, 94; Bassett MD Known Internationally COOPERSTOWN – Dr. Alfred Jaretzi III, 94, a former Bassett Hospital physician whose work on the thymus gland won him an international reputation, died Thursday, May 29, 2014. He had homes in New York City and Essex, Conn. At the time of his death, he was professor emeritus of clinical surgery and special lecturer at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he moved in 1944 after a decade at Bassett. He retired in 1992. While at Bassett, he coauthored with Drs. Arthur Voorhees and Arthur Blakemore the seminal paper on the development of synthetic vascular grafts. This work initiated the modern

era of aortic aneurysm surgery. After returning to Columbia, Fred redefined the Dr. Jaretski anatomy of the thymus gland – a gland associated with the immune system –and the importance of its complete removal in the surgical therapy for myasthenia gravis, earning him an international reputation which continues to this day. His multiple publications on thymectomy lead to his appointment, at age 85, as co-investigator of the NIH funded Recommendations for Clinical Research undertaken by the Myasthenia

Gravis Task Force. Fred’s long and elegant life included being captain of the Junior Varsity Football Team at Harvard and treasurer of the Lampoon, skiing the Headwall at Tuckerman Ravine and winning the New York State Star Class Championship. He was president of the New York Thoracic Society, Practitioner of the Year, medical director of the Operating Rooms in 1992-96, and co-authoring “A Proud Heritage: an Informal History of Surgery at Columbia,” with Drs. Frederic P. Herter and Kenneth A. Forde. He was also a founding member of the Cooperstown village Planning Board. He is survived by his sister Josie Lipman, his

children Alfred IV, Lasell Bartlett, Alexander and Sumner, his stepson Adam Isles and his wife Hannah and their children Nina and Peter, and his loving wife Alexandra. A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 at the Knickerbocker Club in New York City. Contributions in Fred’s memory can be made to the “Alfred Jaretzki III MD Endowment Fund” which supports the research of junior faculty in the area of thoracic surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, Department of Surgery Finance Office, Attn: Trisha J. Hargaden, 21 Audubon Ave., Room 209, New York, NY 10032.
