ll it took was one phone call for Jamie Potter to meet two of his idols – and to make a new friend in the process. Potter, who owns Pie in the Sky, the country store/farm stand on Route 7, had just finished watching the HBO documentary “Thrilla in Manila,” about the famed boxing match between Mohammad Ali and “Smokin’” Joe Frazier. “I got this feeling that I needed to meet Joe,” said Potter. He called Joe Frazier’s Gym in Philadelphia and was surprised that Joe’s son Marvis, AAU and Golden Glove champion and former pro boxer, answered the phone and arranged a meeting. When they met a month later for lunch, “it was like family,” Potter said. “After hearing all Marvis’ stories, I turned to him and I said, ‘I think your life could

COOPERSTOWN – Hana Rauscher, 97, who moved from Latvia to England and, later, to Cooperstown, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing CenOBITUARY ter in Little Falls. Born Dec. 6, 1915, in Kraslava, Latvia, she was a daughter of Leon and Masha Leizerach, who were victims of the Holocaust. She later moved to England where she was a member of the Royal Women’s Voluntary Service (WRVS). After moving to Cooperstown she was active as a volunteer for Bassett Healthcare and was an avid Bridge player. Hana is survived by one son, Andrew Rauscher, M.D. and his wife, Jocelyn,

remember lying on that mat and thinking, ‘Maybe Sam was right’,� he said. But he came back in a fight in 1986 against James “Bonecrusher� Smith. “He had the right name,� said Frazier. “He broke my jaw! My cousin Rodney and my father were in my corner and my cousin said, ‘We gotta stop the fight!’ but my dad kept me in and I won.� That fight set him up for a bout against rising heavyweight Mike Tyson. “In my mind, I was the best, I was King Kong, I didn’t even know this guy. But when I woke up right then, I knew who he was.� He met Tyson again years later in his second career, serving prison ministry at the Plainfield Correctional Facility, where Tyson was serving his sentence for rape. “He didn’t want to come out until he heard I was there,� said Frazier. “Then he met with me and we had a nice chat.� His boxing, and his ministry work, taught him lessons that he still uses when he speaks today. “You have to keep pushing, keep going,� he said. “When I lost to Holmes, I thought I’d let my dad down, but he got in the ring and he put his arms around me, and he said ‘I got you, don’t worry’. I relate that even now, when I talk to people.�

I was a fast runner.� As he grew, he bulked up, excelling at football, wrestling, basketball and baseball, but at age 15, he decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps. “I saw those big knots of money he brought home, and I said, ‘I want to do what you do.’ But my coaches were not too happy when I quit.� In his first fight against Lloyd Patterson’s team at his father’s gym, “I knocked everybody out,� Marvis said. “Mr. Patterson thought I was one of the elite, but it was just my first bout!� In 1976, he won the first of his 44 consecutive amateur consecutive victories, taking home the 1979 Golden Gloves and the 1980 AAU Heavyweight Championship. He was KO’d by James Broad in the 1980 Olympic trials. “My coach Georgie Benton told me that the art of boxing is to hit and not get hit,� he said. “You make the other guy miss and you make him pay for it.� His other trainer, Sam Hickman, tried to tell him not to fight Larry Holmes in 1983. Marvis was 10-0 at that point, young and cocky, but Holmes knocked him out in the first round. “I
