Tepee’s Long-Extinguished Neon Sign To Glow Again TEPEE/From B1 ing a reception 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, July 12. (RSVP on Facebook or at 2643987.) For years, the sisters have wanted to fix it. “Everything in time, said Donna, adding, “We’ve been working on other repairs. Looking at the metalsheathed upside-down cone, the height of four or five tall

people standing on each others’ shoulders, you can see how that has been the case. Most recent, the structure was repainted. Fixing the neon sign, however, was always on the sisters’ minds, and no doubt brother “Tepee Pete Latella’s as well; he operates the adjoining hot-dog stand that specializes in seven-pepper chili.

The family got a nudge from Jeff Friedman, operator of the Let There Be Neon, a lighting studio in New York City, who also owns a weekend home down in the village. The Latellas turned the sign over to Friedman, who “lovingly restored it over the winter, a project that involved removing a bird’s nest, Dale said.

Inside the workings, Friedman also discovered the sign had been repurposed for a souvenir show; previously, it had served an ice-cream stand. The sisters surmise the sign goes back to 1950, when Ken and Iris Gurney erected The Tepee at Route 54 and North Road, just past today’s Cherry ValleySpringfield Central School. Or perhaps it was added in 1954, when the Gurneys,

Tom Morgan Moves From Playwright/Actor To Director MORGAN/From B1 est play, “Leaving Something Behind,” which opens at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the Players of Utica theater, 1108 State St. The second show, at 7 p.m. Monday, July 14, will feature a Q&A with Morgan, as well as director Eileen Tiller-Clanton, who also plays the mother, and Rayna Schneider, who plays the daughter. The show centers around the mother and daughter as they reveal and unravel ugly

truths, shocking revelations and painful memories. “The primal issue is control,” said Morgan. “It’s an issue that’s as old as time – you see it in ancient Greek tragedy, in George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera.” It reverberates, it’s very central to our lives.” But he insisted that the show isn’t as grim as it might seem. “The mother is a very ditzy, Edith Bun-

ker type,” he said. “So that brings some laughs, and the daughter has a very sardonic sense of humor.” He tried out the script in late 2013 with a staged reading at SUNY Oneonta. “The audience really loved it,” he said. “I took it to Rayna to see if she could get it produced.” Still the voice behind “Tom Morgan’s Moneytalk,” the longest-running short feature in American radio – it’s been on the air

for 36 years – Tom turned to playwriting after retiring as a financial adviser. “I had done just about every other kind of writing,” he said. “I had written about the Empire Hotel in my columns, and Franklin Stage asked me to do a reading of some of those stories.” He took it one step further and wrote a one-man show. “That’s when I became a playwright and an actor,” he said. “And that was an adventure!” In 2008-11, Morgan’s “Tales of the Empire” series, based on his father’s proprietorship of the so-named Gilbertsville hotel, was a staple at the Franklin Stage Company. “Leaving Something Behind” is Morgan’s fifth play and the first he isn’t starring in. “I think it will tug at the audience’s heartstrings,” he said. “This kind of story gets inside people.” And from here, he hopes the play can be performed in larger venues. “I’d love to take it to Broadway!” he said. “What the heck, I’ll aim high!”

Harry was awarded the American Service Medal, EAME Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal He was employed by Spaulding Bakery, Oneonta Dairy Co., and other local concerns, and retired as a caretaker for the SUNY Oneonta College Camp on West Street. Harry worked in the

standard bred racing business for many years at Vernon Downs and Saratoga Raceway, and owned a few horses himself, the last with Gus Lampo and Doug Layman. Harry was an avid bowler, and was inducted into the Oneonta Bowling Hall of Fame. One of his greatest joys was playing cards with the “greatest bunch of guys” at the American Legion Post 259. Harry is survived by his two children, Bonnie Robinson of Oneonta, David (Grace) Sinstack of West Oneonta, four grandchildren, James Sinstack ( Johnna Nesteruk) of Oneonta, Richard L. Robinson, Jr.(Amanda Brown) of Sidney, Jeffrey Sinstack (Brooke Ganio) of Morris, and Eric Sinstack (Nicole Wilber) of West Oneonta; his great grandchildren, Aiden and Bryce Robinson, Kendra Barnes and Ethan Sinstack; his sister, Lois Judd of Oneonta; a sister-

in-law, Lynn Sinstack of Oneonta; his niece, JoDee (Paul) Kogut of Hamilton; his nephews, Gary (Penny) Sinstack of Oneonta, and Stephen (Vickie) Judd of Oneonta; his lifelong friend, Tony Drago, and thanks Marcella for all the breakfasts! He was predeceased by a brother, George Sinstack, and a brother-in-law Claude Judd. Per his wishes, Harry was cremated. There will be no formal funeral, but friends are welcome at the interment at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Please enter from Oneida Street. Harry left specific instructions to throw a party for all his family and friends. Please join us at the American Legion Post 259 for lunch following the service. If you can’t join us at the cemetery, please come to the Legion around 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Bridgette Shepardson and Emily Mattison-Welsh, Oneonta, scale the wall ahead of the crowd of TuffeNuff racers in the early morning as the Hometown Fourth of July celebration got underway.

Making the 5K obstacle course look easy, Nathan Batalion, Oneonta, rolls a tire through the mud in Neahwa Park.

Above, Kaylee Cullen tries to get her father Shawn Cullen, Oneonta, to dance with her to live music from the Showmobile. Right, Alex Pentizien enjoyed her 4th of July incognito as the Dark Knight.

Adrenaline Zone Paintball of West Oneonta set up a laser tag arena next to the baseball field where Robert Diaz and Eric Hall, Oneonta, matched their speed and reflexes against fellow players.

Royalty from Cherry Valley – Miss Demeanor and Miss Understood – were again big hits at the Springfield Fourth of July Parade, among the nation’s oldest, when it marked its 100th year.

Retired Bassett physician Roger MacMillan, Cooperstown, ferried family members along the parade route in his antique Ford.

Sean Miller, marching with the Cherry Valley Volunteer Fire Department, sported the brightest red beard of the day.

Why is this woman smiling? Deb Miller had successfully chaired the 100th Anniversary Springfield Fourth of July Parade.
