working as an ophthalmologist. The Tuff eNuff was antiaddiction-agency LEAF’s first 5K race, featuring over 20 obstacles. Racers climbed over walls, waded
through the creek, wriggled under ropes and slogged through mud before crossing the finish line. But at no point during the race did Zerbe consider giving up. He partnered with grandson Caleb, 11, who helped him pace himself. “He said, ‘I’m walking,’ after the last half, but when there was an obstacle, he took off like zoom,” said Zerbe. The patriarch finished the race in 294th place, with a time of 50 minutes, 56 seconds, one spot behind Caleb, who launched into a sprint at the finish line. he first fully “Wagnerian” opera with the highest pretensions of both myth and overstatement is “The Flying Dutchman.” It is also the first Wagnerian libretto in a long list of what might be called bathetic bravado – the attempt to reach textual heavens but falling, inevitably, to the pull of semantic gravity. One could perform the Dutchman in English – also a good deal of the multiple-hours-long “Ring

Cycle” – but Wagner’s texts should most frequently be left with the semi-intelligible. They should be classed with the verse of a now-forgotten 19th century tribe, “The Spasmodic Poets.” Not being translated is an essential advantage of Wagner’s operatic language, leaving it in its banal but everstrenuous Ur-Kampf. Season Opens With ‘Extraordinary’ Leads In ‘Dutchman’ OPERA/From B1 the characters’ motivations and illumines the stage simply, inventively, vividly. The plot of this opera contains the elements later celebrated at such extraordinary length: a search for the unattainable, a long journey (or journeys), and a transcendent experience – finally an operatic apotheosis – or bodies floating in death to the “heavens above.” Much of this overly stylized paraphernalia is achieved through “love.” Now – women in their many manifestations, their multiple acts of valor, their repeated experiences of low pay, long hours, etc., are worthy of the highest esteem – also monetary
correction. But is woman – or any other mortal – a means of transcendence and seraphic loss of gravity? The response, inevitably: “It’s only myth.” Yes, but this Dutchman myth is miffed with woeful dispatches of hyperstatement: woman is a “gem.” Her operatic prayer is: “May God’s angel bring you to me. I will save you.” At the opposite verbal extreme, a love-rival intones: “I am a poor hunter, but I offer you a true heart.” In one helpful explanation, the Dutchman and the female lead, Senta, “continue to gaze at each other, he wondering if he has at last found the angel to heal his soul, she yearning to pro-
vide the balm she so clearly sees he needs.” This production introduces a small iron camp bed for an interrupted erotic encounter. In conventional productions, Dutchman sinks into the platitudinous sunset, and Senta is left on the same verbal shore with (depending on the staging) a “raging sea.” Senta’s final original words: “Here I stand, faithful unto death.” In self-contradiction, she then throws herself into the ocean and drowns. The Dutchman? His ship, with red sails, sinks on stage. Senta at Glimmerglass, however, strangles herself with a hawser near the camp bed, leaving the sea for the
Dutchman. Original summary: “The glow of the sun brightens the sky as the lovers’ souls, embracing (!?), ascend to heaven and eternal rest.” A marvelous English poet wrote: “The grave’s a fine and quiet place/But none I think do there embrace.” That realism is lost – even totally abandoned – in the erotic gloom of Wagnerian fantasy. The leads in the opera are extraordinary. Wagner’s vocal scores are dangerous and can be a speedy Autobahn to accidents and laryngeal mutilations. Long may Melody Moore, Ryan McKinny, Jay Hunter Morris survive, even prevail. The score is magnificent.
One wonders how such a musical genius could create such verbal detritus. Perhaps Wagner represented himself in the brass section of the
orchestra, overpowering the more delicate strings? In his total output, he also killed off a life-boat of female leads. Where such antagonism led? To fame and reams of still active controversy.

Family Tuff eNuff Together FAMILY/From B1 Robert Davidson. Stalter, who died in 2012, participated in the Iron Man and other long-distance endurance races. “The Tuff eNuff would have been too easy for Ken!” he joked. It was the practice’s missionary work that brought him to Oneonta, and during
his time there, he traveled around the world delivering care to the poor, including a month-long stay in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. He raised his family in Otego, in the house Tammi and Tim live in now. When his wife Sherry’s Parkinson’s worsened, he moved them to a one-story house
on Ravine Parkway. While others were out running trails and practicing their Insanity workouts, Zerbe and the family took a different approach to training, playing soccer and Nerf War with his children in his backyard. “It kept us running,” he said. “And I did some running around SUNY Oneonta.” Zerbe also bikes, partici-

“It’s about doing it with the family,” he said. “If we can get them together next year, we’ll race again.”

OBITUARIES
Honey Kassoy, 96; Artist Hosted ‘Junk-Sculpture’ Parties Hortense “Honey” Kassoy, 96, who for years hosted annual junk-sculpture parties with her late husband Bernie at their summer place near Garrattsville, passed away Friday, July 5, at her home in The Bronx. Both Honey and her husband were accomplished artists – they painted and sculpted – and were long-time members and exhibitors at the SmithyPioneer Gallery in Cooperstown. A memorial gathering is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Vladeck Hall, 74 Van Cortlandt Park South in The Bronx. For more information, call her daughter, Sheila Krstevski, at (914) 245-8075. Honey Blumenkranz was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Brooklyn, the daughter of teachers. When she graduated from Madison High School in 1932 at age 15, her parents took her and her older brother for a tour of European museums. She studied briefly at Parson’s School of Design in Paris, and on her return spent three years at Pratt. She then completed her bachelor’s and master’s at Columbia Teachers’ College, and returned to teach at Madison. In 1941, while at an audition for a

variety show in a local teachers’ union hall, Honey met Bernie, who was painting sets. (Bernie had brought along a pal, Sammy – later Zero – Mostel, who had the gathering in stitches.) Bernie went off to World War II. On his return, the two inevitably ran into each other again and soon married. At first, the newlyweds lived in a set of six brownstones in Brooklyn that had been set aside for artists. But soon they obtained one of 1,500 apartments in The Amalgamated, a complex facing Van Cortlandt Park that the Amalgamated Clothing Workers had
built in 1925 to ensure good housing for its members. It was in that same apartment that Honey passed away six decades later. When daughters Sheila and Meredith were old enough to go to summer camp, Honey and Bernie went to Europe, cruising the Greek isles and the Adriatic. For several summers they sculpted near Carrara, the source of Michelangelo’s marble. On retiring from teaching in the early ’70s, the Kassoys discovered their country place in Otsego County. Each fall before returning to The Amalgamated, they would invite friends for an afternoon of making sculpture from whatever they had accumulated over the summer. Bernie died on Aug. 22, 2008, at age 93, but his widow continued to summer locally. Honey is survived by her daughters Meredith Kassoy and Sheila Kassoy Krstevski, sons-in-law Rafael Bustin and Dimitar Krstevski, grandson Alexander Krstevski and wife Anna Krstevski with great-grandson Nicholas Krstevski and granddaughter Toby Krstevski.
