he innovative Glimmerproduction of Verdi’s “Aida” confronts the tragic realms of military reality – commonly concealed by propaganda and evasion. Military “adventures” kill and maim to ensure the supposed benefits of social change. One of the many ironic

touches in this production features male dancers thumping about in Bremer-boots – the kind made notorious by one of the earlier architects of yet another “intervention” – or, honestly put, foreign war. This innovative production exaggerates for effect, if any imitation of battle and social

hysteria can ever be accurately portrayed; it invokes the kind of heated irreverence served by Brecht in “Mother Courage.” One either likes topically sharpened references direct Karli Cadel/The Glimmerglass Festival from history or spends a lifeNoah Stewart stars as Radamès, the lead in time avoiding them, merely Please See AIDA, B2 Verdi’s “Aida,” which opened the Glimmerglass Festival’s 2012 season.

AIDA/From B1 sending taxes every year to fund the latest military mayhem to “win hearts and minds.” “Aida” was the third from last of Verdi’s great contributions to Italian and Western culture, followed by works based on his favorite author, Shakespeare. The libretto of “Aida,” however, may depend too heavily on what some characters overhear but should not know. The older writings of Scribe and Goldoni and dozens of others used screens to conceal scheming actors. Mozart’s librettist for his best comedy used this device. So what’s it doing in “tragic Aida”? It services the plot, moving it along at several levels of implausibility, all of which Verdi’s magnificent scoring and melodic gifts conceal. What drew him to this totally invented story? The financial profit was considerable – and he continued his investments for a growing country estate. The neighbors disliked this, as well as his “immorality,” living with a “fallen” woman for several years before their marriage. Yes, the ignorant and superstitious neighbors would have driven the composer from

Verdi prevailed because of his earnings, personal heroism over life’s tragedies (his young first wife and two children died quite early), and his close identity with nationalism and newly forged Italian independence. One does not go to any opera merely for contemporary political references. What of the other important if not essential elements: the conducting, the orchestral performance, the singing? This Aida is a superlative musical experience. The tempos are ideal for the voices, and the ballet moves along at a smart tempo – even with the Bremer boots. The orchestra, with many parts for solo instruments, performs at the highest professional level. The brass? Magnificent. “Tuba mirum”! A rosette for the leading tenor, Noah Stewart (Radames), and may all the soloists long survive the frequently extreme demands of this score.
