rom small beginnings only two years ago, Alpenglow is about to share a big stage with a big name. On Thursday, July 25, Alpenglow will share the stage with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, a nationally touring, award-winning folk rock band at Brewery Ommegang as part of their summer concert series. “They’re the most famous band to come out of Vermont,” said Cooperstown’s Pete Coccoma, who plays guitar and sings in Alpenglow. They were first introduced to Potter’s management at a festival in Burlington. “They saw us play and found out we were from Cooperstown, so they asked us to open for her at

sorts for Pete, along with bass player Colin Weeks and drummer Kenneth Root, who grew up along Lake Otsego at a time when there was only one local band, Post-Neo. “And we weren’t in it,” said Pete. The three played in the CCS jazz and concert bands; Pete and Kenneth also played for the school musicals. “We all sort of knew each other,” said Pete. “But not as well as we do now.” Colin graduated in 2005; Pete and Kenneth followed in 2007. At Middlebury College, Pete met Elori Kramer, who

played violin and banjo, and Graeme Daubert, a vocalist and guitar player. “We started playing together, and I told them about Kenneth --‘Hey,I know a great drummer at the University of Vermont’,” said Pete. Each musician brought different influences to the group, creating a folk-inspired blend of rock music and vocal harmonies. “A lot of people compare us to Fleet Foxes,” said Pete. On tour, if Elori’s controlling the iPod, they might find themselves listening to Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon. Colin likes Ween, Please See BAND, B8

Mass prosperity flows uphill, according to this fantasy. Yet – how does one rule? That’s the question in “Camelot.” Further, how does one rule without fiasco or tragedy, or when fiascos occur, does one dress them in the costumes of “national interest”? How does a leader compensate for the incapacities, the tendencies of government to err. These questions far surpass the social message of “My Fair Lady.” That is, through patience and education, Eliza Doolittle could be taught good language, acquire decent manners, be transformed. However, can national politicians even be educated? Must they always wave a sword or firearm in the air, or recognize that their militant calls lead to

lated, a generally innocent populace into avoidable errors. No staging could be more imaginative than that of this season’s Glimmerglass. The company achieves the paradox of more with less. One might note that the federal

budget for military bands far surpasses the national appropriation for ALL the arts in America. This production comes alive in the second half, particularly with the appearance of Mordred, played with balletic verve by Jack Noseworthy. Adriana Chuchman is the lovely

and vocally impressive Guenevere. The energy of conductor James Lowe’s almost fully compensates for occasionally lagging text, particularly in its first hour and a half. The special guest appearance of Horace von Hund, with an immaculate stage presence, was an audience favorite.

Ommegang Gives Break To Alpenglow BAND/From B1 and Pete likes Modest Mouse. “At our first show, we covered ‘Third Planet’,” he said. But they all agree that The Band is one of their biggest influences. “When Levon Helm died, we played “Tears of Rage” at our next show,” said Pete. “We don’t normally do covers, but it seemed appropriate.” They started playing clubs and festivals with their folk-inspired rock and vocal harmonies. “We didn’t have a name for awhile,” said Elori. “We would just put our first names on the poster, ‘Colin and Pete and Elori and Graeme Are Playing a Show’!” “It’s harder than you think to come up with a name!” added Pete. Colin joined the band later, and the name Alpenglow came from a walk in the woods the group took. “Graeme had just learned the term ‘Alpenglow,’ which is when the sun reflects off the clouds and makes the mountains shimmer,” said Elori. Subconsciously, it reminded Kenneth and Pete of the hills around Otsego Lake. “The lake was a big part of growing up here,” said Kenneth. “You spent your whole summer in the lake, around the lake.” “It’s still a part of our everyday lives,” Colin said.
