At 1 p.m., learn “What’s Inside the Hall of Fame” with the author series at the Bullpen Theater. ‘King’ Has Courage, Beauty, Imagination
VERDI/From B1 bare subsistence. This gave him a totally practical view of life. A crank wrote him after attending Aida, demanding repayment for train fare, tickets, and meals. Verdi wrote his publisher, Ricordi, to pay – but not for the meals – they would have been eaten anyway. He argued with librettists (only one, Arrigo Boito, was a verbal genius), fought with conductors, and his letters to La Scala directors and flunkies in Milan anticipate the anger of Toscanini. Verdi’s survival is miraculous. The mother hid in a church razed by sadistic military brigands, killing and burning all inside – save for this one mother and her child hiding in a tower. His education was haphazard. His beautiful first wife and both young children died – all from filth imposed by the subsistence of poverty. Yet he appreciated dramatic humor and adored Shakespeare. Despite abject want in his youth, Verdi always lived a life of the mind. “King for a Day,” courageously, beautifully, imaginatively mounted at
the Glimmerglass Festival in English, was Verdi’s second opera. It was a failure in Milan. The singers were not only unprepared but inadequate after two rehearsals. Two??? About translating opera: English is a difficult language for the projection of verbal grace. The British have been far more successful in this than the stubborn, resistant American idiom. British comic verse far surpasses any American attempt – even W.S. Gilbert (with or without Sullivan) has few (no?) equals this side of the pond. As for crucifixion being a religious model of insight and humane perception: “Stabat Mater,” a ChristianLatin poem, is exceeded in power only by the Latin Requiem’s vision of the last judgment. “Stabat Mater” is another moral ignored by every generation of sadistic repeaters of unjust punishments. Mary stands before her crucified son, a Roman victim of authority and caprice (that must be made clear, immediately and always: a Roman victim). One of the greatest moral sentiments in any language is this: “’What

is truth?’ asked jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer.” So who does? Crucifixion was a most effective Roman method of maintaining order. The bodies were left rotting on their crosses after the victims slowly died of suffocation. Arms tied even slightly above the head cause cramps and spasms – gradually denying lung function. The removal of any Roman victim was a capital crime; hence the great courage of Mary and her holy aides. Is any of this appropriate for a ballet? The dances were done with taste and understatement; the setting simple and imaginative. A short life’s final score by Giovanni Pergolesi (17101736) is one of the crown jewels in all of musical literature. The tasteful conducting was most effective, the countertenor brilliant, the soprano in top form: namely, Speranza Scappucci, Anthony Roth Constanzo, Nadine Sierra.

Wyeth Kin ‘Gives Insight You Don’t Get Very Often’
WYETH/From B1 In addition to the lecture and four Galley Talks, the only granddaughter of Andrew Wyeth, Victoria – he called her “Vickers”, she called “Andy” or “Grandpa, when I was mad at him” – showed never-before-seen studies that led to the creation of “Stop,” Andy’s last painting. “He would do five to 50 preliminary studies,” she said. “And he’d leave them scattered all over the studio. Some would have dog paw prints on them, some would have footprints. He’d tell me, ‘I don’t want anyone to see my studies, they’ll think I’m messy’.” “This is an insight you don’t get very often,” said Maria Vann, The Fenimore’s educational programs manager. Wyeth started painting at age 6 – his first painting was of a pirate ship in the fog – and dropped out of school to pursue study with his father, N.C. Wyeth, the famed muralist and illustrator. “He told his mother ‘If I have to go to school one more day, I will die’!” Victoria said. “Only when your father is N.C. Wyeth can you get away with that.” N.C. was a strict teacher, once wiping off a hook from one of Andrew’s paintings of a painting of Bill Loeper, a neighbor with a hook for a hand. “You don’t need that,” N.C. told his son. Fifty years later, Bill Loeper – and his hook – would reappear in two other paintings, “Field Hand” and “Little Africa.” Victoria posed for a few of her grandfather’s paintings, including “Nickers Vicker” and “The Only Child.” “The first time I posed for him, the next day, I couldn’t move my neck!” she said. Victoria began giving gallery talks on the Wyeth’s work when she was 14. “My mom was giving talks and, like any obnoxious teenager, I thought I could do it better.” She would give the lecture, and then her grandfather would sit her down and go over all the questions the audience asked and the answers she gave, “To correct me,” she said. She began keeping an “Andy” journal of all his notes and stories, going through 12,000 of his paintings. “He kept them
in binders by year,” she said. “He would take one down and teach me how he thought.” She’d go to galleries with him, where he’d walk up and touch the painting to point out techniques and stories. “He’d say ‘When I did this –’ and slap his hand on the painting, and people would give him these looks,” she said. Though she signed several books, including Andrew’s autobiography, she advised people to be careful which of the many Wyeth biographies they choose. “I won’t read a lot of them,” she said. “It’s tricky reading all your family’s secrets.” While in town, Victoria also took the lecture on the road, speaking with residents at the Thanksgiving Home and Otsego Manor with a PowerPoint of her family’s artwork. “In today’s economy, these places can’t always afford to transport them to museums,” she said. “So I’ll bring it to them.” “Andy loved to paint,” she said. “So few people leave this world loving what they’ve done.”

AT THE AUCTION 11. All bidders are required to register and provide suitable personal identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, at registration. Auctioneer reserves the right to decline registration if identification is not sufficient. Individuals other than lawyers, acting on behalf of others, not in attendance at the auction, must produce a “Power of Attorney” duly executed and notarized. Incorporated entities (Inc., Corp., LLC, etc.) are required to provide a corporate resolution with a corporate seal affixed where applicable, authorizing the purchase of real property, prior to the transfer of title, and are encouraged to provide same at registration. 12. All bidders are required to use the bidder number issued to them for all purposes associated with the auction. A bidder may not bid on behalf of a party who is on the prohibited bidder list. A party will be added to such list if he has defaulted in payment of a

Any successful bidder, who fails to tender the deposit, will be forbidden to participate in this or any other auction. Any parcels which the County did not receive deposits for, as per these terms and conditions, will be considered to be defaulted, and the bidder will be disqualified from further bidding. Furthermore, upon a default in payment for any one parcel, either during the auction or subsequent thereto, the bidder shall not be permitted to purchase any other parcel(s) bid on, and any deposit monies paid thereon will be forfeited to the County. 14. In the event the bidder fails to pay the required deposit at the auction, or the bidder/purchaser fails to consummate the closing of title after the auction, and, in either event the County re-sells the property but receives a lower bid, then the County shall have a cause of action against the defaulting bidder for money damages for the difference. 15. The terms “bidder”, “highest bidder”, and “successful bidder” shall all have the same meaning. 16. Successful Bidder shall provide information necessary to complete, and shall execute the necessary forms and documents required for recording the deed in the Otsego County Clerk’s Office. The bidder executing the auction terms and conditions of sale may not assign or otherwise transfer his right to complete the bid, unless the County agrees in writing. The deed prepared will be in the name of the successful bidder (and spouse) only. No third party bidding will be accepted, unless the bidder identifies that he is bidding as an agent for a disclosed principal, or unless the bidder is a lawyer. 17. At the auction, the auctioneer’s decision regarding any disputes is final, and the auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is not an appreciable advancement over the proceeding bid. 18. The Successful Bidder will execute an Offer to Purchase form immediately upon being declared the high bidder. The approval of each bid by Resolution of the

The former owner of the property, or his agent, shall not be deemed to be the successful bidder on the property or purchase same at the public auction. 21. $500.00 or 25% of the total contract price (total contract price is the combination of the high bid and the buyer’s premium, as defined in paragraph 19 of these terms and conditions), whichever is higher, shall be paid as a down payment on the day of the auction upon execution of an Offer to Purchase Form. Total contract prices selling for $500.00 or less must be paid in full at the auction, including all closing costs will be paid with the down payment on the day of the auction for each parcel, to wit: (a) New York State Transfer Tax [$2.00 for each $500.00 of the purchase/bid price]; (b) Filing Fee for the Real Property Transfer Report [$125.00 if the parcels classification code is 100-199, 200-299 or 411-C; $250.00 for all parcels otherwise classified]: (c) Filing Fee for combined Gains Transfer Tax Affidavit [$5.00]; (d) all fees required by the Otsego County Clerk for recording of the deed [$40.00 to record a one page deed; $5.00 for each additional page]; (e) an additional filing fee for Oneonta City properties [$10.00] and (f) a $20.00 surcharge. Closing costs may be subject to an increase in fees as required by law, without notice. All deposits must be made in credit card (Master Card, Discover Card or Visa), cash or guaranteed funds (bank check/tellers check/cashiers check) payable to the “Otsego County Treasurer” and drawn on banks insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The County Treasurer may refund overage of a deposit made in excess of the total contract price plus closing costs/fees once the funds have cleared, or apply said sum to the balance owing on the purchase price. 22. The Purchaser(s) paying by credit card(s), understands and agrees that all deposits collected by credit card(s) will be turned over to the Otsego County Treasurer. The Purchaser paying by credit card(s) agrees that they shall NOT attempt a chargeback on their credit card(s) used in this transaction for any reason whatsoever. AFTER THE AUCTION 23. All bids shall be subject to approval by the Otsego County Legislature, which shall have the right, in the Legislature’s sole discretion, to reject any bid for any reason whatsoever. 24. The entire balance of the accepted purchase price, the buyer’s premium, as defined in paragraph 19 of these terms and conditions, and all closing costs/ fees including all taxes, costs and fee referred to in paragraphs 3 and 4 must be paid by credit card (Master Card or Visa), cash or guaranteed funds payable to and received by the Otsego County Treasurer’s Office on or before 12:00PM, September 13, 2013. Deed transfers will begin being processed on a first pay basis, once all sales have been approved by the County Board Meeting on September 4, 2013. The County is not required to send further notice to a purchaser. If the purchaser fails to pay the balance of the total contract price plus closing costs and fees as herein provided, the deposit shall be forfeited. The County reserves the right to bring an action for specific performance. “Time is of the essence.” 25. Purchasers of residential, improved properties will reimburse the County $50.00 at the “closing” in those cases where the County has installed smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors. 26.
