inda Hovey is sew-crazy. “At last count, I had 350 sewing machines,” said the Oneonta native. “That includes the little ones. I even have them in the kitchen!” The rooms of her home in Laurens, built in 1880, are stacked to the 11-foot-high ceilings with machines, memorabilia and vintage clothing with plans to turn the front rooms into a sewing machine museum. “I wanted to show what kind of machine a dress could have been made on,” she said, pointing to the lace on a sheer white 1910 graduation gown. “This was done with a tucking-foot-on-a-treadle machine – it could do insert lace like this.” Hovey was born and raised in Oneonta and bought the house in Laurens in 2005, when she and husband RichLinda Hovey’s museumard moved with Lowes’, where to-be is a cornucopia of Linda is a manager. SEWING MACHINE CENTRAL TO COUNTY HISTORY

T

he sewing machine and Otsego County history are entwined through the person of Edward Clark. After his marriage in 1836 to Caroline Jordan of Cooperstown, Clark, a lawyer in partnership with his father-in-law, Ambrose Jordan, became a frequent visitor to the village. In 1848, he helped a client, Isaac M. Singer, keep control of a crucial sewing-machine patent and, when I.M. Singer & Co. formed soon after, Clark was “legal adviser and half owner,” according to Ralph Birdsall’s “History of Cooperstown.” After Singer’s death, Edward Clark became president of the hugely successful Singer Manufacturing Co. Jane Forbes Clark of Cooperstown, president of The Clark Foundation, is his great-great-granddaughter.

Laurens Woman’s Dream For 350 Sewing Machines: A Museum

SEWING/From B1 and party dresses, and that storm just shut down the city. I couldn’t sew for two weeks, and I was going crazy. But a neighbor had a treadle sewing machine that belonged to her grandmother.”

“Now, I love sewing,” she continued. “I’m been sewing all my life, and I began to wonder about how many sewing machines there were.” She began scouring yard and antique sales for new machines. “A lot of people

don’t know what they have and what it’s worth,” she said. For $25, Linda acquired a 1849 Elias Howe machine, the first sewing machine ever made in America, at a garage sale. “It sat in someone’s barn for too

long,” she said. It’s currently being restored. “The replica of that same machine cost me $195.” The first Singer sewing machine – that company made the fortune of Cooperstown’s Clark dynasty – appeared on the market

in 1851, but her earliest is from 1853. “By 1880, there were 150 manufacturers in the USA,” she said. “By 1900, there were 15.” There were even portable sewing machines for men in the battlefields of the Civil War. “The hand-cranked ones were for sailors and soldiers who had to repair their uniforms,” she said. “They came in a little carrying case.” There is one machine she keeps hoping will turn up in an attic, although she admits it isn’t very likely. “Not even the Smithsonian has the first sewing machine from France in the 1790s,” she said. “The tailors thought it would put them out of business and destroyed them all.” In addition to the machines, Hovey also has sewing accoutrements, including iron crank and heated pleaters, sewing baskets and needlebooks. “You could get these everywhere,” she said. “The A&P gave them out, funeral homes, hard-

ware stores. We won’t even go into how many of these I have.” While Hovey’s museum won’t be ready for another two years, but it’s not for lack of items to display. Of the 350 sewing machines, 100 are small and portable, used by children or on trains and 55 are treadles. “I figure I can get 39 of those treadles on display and still have the place be wheelchair accessible,” she said. In addition to the displays, she’ll also do demonstrations of how the machines work. “A lot of people think you have to pull the fabric through,” she said. “It’s got a rhythm, and it’s gentle.” In the meantime, she’s keeping busy making curtains, fixing the house and repairing vintage clothing to put on display. “I use a computerized sewing machine, but I also still use my mother’s Singer Slantmatic 500,” she said. “I did all my high school sewing on this.”

Gen. Douglas McArthur’s routing of the Bonus Army in Washington, D.C., scattering jobless veterans seeking payment they believed they were promised after World War I. During that decade, Moore developed into something of a veterans’ bank, lending cash to those needing, say, a bag of coal in the winter, then cashing their checks – sometimes endorsing them – and returning the difference. No money was every missing, but when the Army caught up with these practices, “I was let go, fired, terminated,” Ed lamented. Help came from Mayor Russell Brigham, who inherited the top City Hall job in the fall of 1942, when the incumbent, Daniel Franklin, died in office that fall. Franklin appointed Moore city historian – that, and bingo inspector, are the two jobs a major could unilaterally fill – and he immediately began compiling a list of Oneontans serving in World

War II, the basis for honor rolls that can still be found around the city. When Common Council declined to underwrite the project, Ed Moore related, he extracted a $1,000 stipend from the Oneonta Chamber of Commerce. Whether that, or some other peccadillo, “incurred the wrath of City Hall, I wasn’t reappointed” – and never again received another city job. Through the 1950s, Moore was tending his ailing father, a mother who was blind and a sister who was increasingly deaf, but in 1960 he was approached about rejoining the local daily and did so, writing two columns, “Around Town,” which chronicled birthdays, anniversaries and other social happenings, and “In Old Oneonta,” Swart-Wilcox’ Lois Herrick, who emceed the afternoon, arrived from Providence, R.I., in 1960. and Ed Moore, come to life, recounted his Oneonta boyhood from his Sept. 25, 1895, birth to – following in the footsteps of Wilbur Bresee and IBM founder Harlow Bundy – graduation from Hamilton College in 1917. Many eminent Oneontans also graduated from Colgate, but too many “went on to Albany Law School and ruined good liberal educations,” the reborn Moore recounted. After a stint in an Army band – he played drums – young Ed took up the newspaper business, rising to city editor through the 1920s under the stern tutelage of Daily Star then-editor Harry W. Lee. Beginning in 1928, he ran a bookstore for a while, then obtained appointment as the city’s veterans counselor during The Depression. “The 30s were not easy, and they were not easy for veterans,” said the revived Moore, shaking his head, and retelling the story of

His Aim: To Chronicle His Hometown

Cooperstown Theatre Festival

MOORE/From B3 young son Craig’s birthday was reported in “Around Town, and the boy turned to his mother and said of his new home, “This is a good place. But it was not without controversy: When Al Farone underwent surgery in Albany, Ed reported he was “prostrate with prostate, which did not amuse the eminent local attorney. But it was “In Old Oneonta that provided the treasure trove that Oneonta enthusiasts still dip into today, some systematically, but others a sip here – did you know city native Charles Edgar Fritts patented the technology for talkies? – a taste there – did you know that straight wide stretch of Chestnut Street west of Clinton was built atop “The Chinese Wall,

a huge undertaking that required 200,000 cubic feet of fill? Or of the Otsego & Herkimer Railroad? Or of 1816, the year without a summer? When his facts were challenge, “Ed told the gathering, he was undeterred: He was an “impressionist, capturing the mood, tone, color “and the heart and soul of Oneonta as I saw it, good and bad. The columns, many written at the old Diana Restaurant, were collected in four volumes, published during the 1960s. A fifth volume, with a Don Sherwood drawing of Ed Moore on the cover, was published by the Greater Oneonta Historical Society and is still available for sale at the History Center, 183 Main. Throughout his life, he

remained active in the Vets’ Club, and could often be found in the bar there. Back in his own persona, Brenner remembered pulling Moore out of a snow drift outside the Chestnut Street clubhouse, where he had ended up head first trying to pull another pal, SUNY Oneonta history prof Bert Horton, out of the same drift. At one point in the ‘60s, when he wrote a rousing campaign speech for Republican Cyrus Wright, who was challenging incumbent Democrat Sam Stratton for Congress, the Binghamton Press tried to lure him away. Moore considered it, but as his alter-ego recounted it, “I just wanted to be someone who chronicled my community. He died on May 3, 1978, age 82.

They are neither a guarantee nor a warranty as to location, dimensions, parcel use and/or size, or anything else. THE COUNTY, THE AUCTIONEER, AND THE BROKER MAKE NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS SALE, except that the County has complied with requirements of New York State Law regarding the Tax Foreclosure proceeding. All real property, including any buildings thereon, is sold “AS IS” and without any representation or warranty whatsoever as to the condition or title. The County Treasurer may refund overage of a deposit made in excess of the total contract price plus closing costs/fees once the funds have cleared, or apply said sum to the balance owing on the purchase price. 22.The Purchaser(s) paying by credit card(s), understands and agrees that all deposits collected by credit card(s) will be turned over to the Otsego County Treasurer. The Purchaser paying by credit card(s) agrees that they shall NOT attempt a chargeback on their credit card(s) used in this transaction for any reason whatsoever. AFTER THE AUCTION 23.All bids shall be subject to approval by the Otsego County Legislature, which shall have the right, in the Legislature’s sole discretion, to reject any bid for any reason whatsoever.

24.The entire balance of the accepted purchase price, the buyer’s premium, as defined in paragraph 19 of these terms and conditions, and all closing costs/fees including all taxes, costs and fee referred to in paragraphs 3 and 4 must be paid by credit card (Master Card or Visa), cash or guaranteed funds payable to and received by the Otsego County Treasurer’s Office on or before September 14, 2012. The County reserves the right to bring an action for specific performance. “Time is of the essence.” 25.Purchasers of residential, improved properties will reimburse the County $50.00 at the “closing” in those cases where the County has installed smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors. 26. All parcels for which you are the highest bidder must be paid pursuant to these Terms. There will be no selective closings. Failure to remit full payment on all parcels for which you are the successful bidder will result in a forfeiture of all monies tendered, and you will not be permitted to close on any other parcels for which you were the successful bidder. 27.If a Successful Bidder owes any delinquent taxes to Otsego County,

those delinquent taxes must be paid in full prior to closing on any purchases made at this auction. Failure to comply with this provision will result in the forfeiture of any deposits paid. 28.If the successful bidder fails to tender such amount due by the close of business on September 14, 2012, then the County may, but is not obligated to offer any unsold property to the second highest bidder. All terms and conditions for the sale set forth herein above shall apply to the second highest bidder and/or any other purchaser. 29.In the event that a sale is cancelled by court order or judgment, the successful bidder shall be entitled only to a refund of any deposits paid. If the bid is rejected by the Otsego County Legislature, any refund will be returned without interest. Purchasers agree that they shall not be entitled to special or consequential damages, attorney’s fees; reimbursement for any expenses incurred as a result of ownership, improvements made to the property or for taxes paid during period of ownership. 30.All sales shall be final, absolute and without recourse once title has closed and the deed has been recorded. or assigns, arising from this sale and conveyance. 31.Conveyance shall be by quitclaim deed only, containing a description of the property as it appeared on the tax roll for the year upon which the County acquired title or as corrected up to date of deed. The purchaser agrees that neither he/she nor his/her assigns shall convey the property to the former owner(s) against whom Otsego County foreclosed within thirty-six (36) months subsequent to the date of the auction. If such conveyance occurs, the purchaser understands that he/ she may be found to have committed fraud, and/or intent to defraud, and will be liable for any deficiency between the purchase price at auction and such sums as may be owed to Otsego County and consents to immediate entry of a judgment by Otsego County for said amounts (A copy of the within Terms and Conditions executed by the bidder/purchaser shall be attached to and warrant the filling of an Affidavit of Confession of Judgment.) 1LegalAug2 Legal notice Notice of formation of BRUNSWICK BROS LLC, Articles of Organization were filed with the NY Secretary of State on June 20, 2012. IN MEMORIAM Paul ‘Scorchy’ Scorzafava, 69; Yellowjackets Fan Raised 5 Sons Locally ONEONTA – Paul Jerry “Scorchy” Scorzafava Sr., 69, a fan of Oneonta and its Yellowjacket teams, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Fox Hospital. He was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Troy, the son of the late Alfred and Esther (Ward) Scorzafava. Scorchy graduated from Oneonta High School, then entered the Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam War; he was honorably discharged in 1964. On April 18, 1970, Paul married Suzanne M. Rouillard in Springfield, Mass. Together they shared 42

years of marriage. For many years, Scorchy owned and operated the Metropolitan Diner. He was also Paul J. a real-estate Scorzafava investor and had several properties. A sports fanatic, he was proud of his sons’ participation in sports as they were growing up. He coached football, wrestling and baseball. He was an avid fan of

the Oneonta Yellowjackets, and also enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New York Jets. Scorchy was fond of traveling and orchestrating annual family vacations. He and his wife enjoyed going to shows, and were members of Proctor’s in Schenectady and Orpheus Theatre. Most of all, Paul cherished time spent with family; especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Oneonta BPOE No. 1312, HealthLinks, and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

Thomas G. Rowley, 88; Newspaperman ONEONTA – Thomas G.
