ome families have skeletons in their closets. One family, the Austins of Austin Auctioneers here, sells those skeletons for profit. “We picked up a prop coffin with a skeleton inside from a funeral home in Schenevus,” said Margaret Austin, the founder’s daughter. “We put it out in front of the auction house, and cars were sliding all over the place trying Founder Ray to look at it.” Austin Sr. The coffin shows his – and the skel- stuff. eton; a prop, not a real one – fetched a good price from some college students when they went up on the Route 7 auction block the next week. Tex Seamon’s Detective Work Finds Forgotten Veteran’s Kin By JIM KEVLIN RICHFIELD SPRINGS

very time Tex Seamon passed that depression in the earth at the far end of the Lakeview Cemetery, it bothered him. There was a small metal
marker, standard VA issue, with the words, “George H. Clapsaddle, 1917-1994,” in tiny letters. Nothing more. Seamon, retired director of the county’s Veterans Service Agency, obtained a flag holder and placed it there; stop by, and you’ll see a small flag fluttering in the wind. 4 Generations Of Austin Family In Auctions AUSTINS/From B1 Lyons’ used-furniture business, Ray struck out on his own, opening Austin’s Auction in an old lumber mill in March 1977. And he put the whole family to work. His wife, Geraldine, who died in 2003, worked the cash box, something his granddaughter, Elizabeth, does now. “That’s what all the kids start out doing,” said Margaret, who manages the paperwork and day-today operations. “It’s how they learn their numbers.” Her brother, Ray Jr., goes out and looks for treasures. And boy, does he find them. “I was driving past this one house out near Worcester and this guy was just throwing stuff out of his aunt’s house,” he said. “I looked in the garbage, and there were three pieces of Tiffany glass. He had no idea.” Ray Jr. drove to the general store and used a payphone to call his dad,

who brought his truck. They bought up much of the estate and sold it at auction. “We sent him quite a large check for what he thought was gar-
bage,” he said. “He sent us a nice thank you note.” Another time, he found himself helping out an elderly woman with a garage sale. “I bought almost everything,” he said. “And then she told me she needed the money to buy firewood, and we were able to send her a nice check. She sent me a note back saying I was crazy for doing such a nice thing for her, but it makes you feel good to help people.” And the next generation is already being put to work. “I just hold things,” said grandson Paul. “But I learned to count money. That was painful.” Even Jeremiah, 9, helps his dad, Ray Jr., “He looks through drawers to see if there’s any goodies,” he said. “It keeps him out of trouble.” And every Tuesday evening is like a family gathering, with everyone working together. “It’s something we all grew up with,” said Margaret. “And if you love it, you do it. We love it.”
Ray Sr. auctions off a mirror at Austin’s Auctions that reflects daughter Margaret Van Warner, recording the evening’s sales.

She met and married Robert W. Moyer in 1960. In April 1965, Bob and his family moved to Oneonta when he became assistant trust officer at
Key Bank; he was president/CEO of Wilber National Bank at the time of his retirement. Joan quickly became involved in a number of community activities and organizations, many of which related to education and children, and often took a leadership position (President of Oneonta School Board, President of YMCA Board, active in Catholic Charities, Future of Oneonta, Girls Scouts, 4-H, Executive Service Corps, and many others). Throughout her time in Oneonta she received the Oneonta Teachers’ Association Friend of Education Award (1973), the Hartwick College Citizen of the Year
Award (1989), the SUNY Oneonta Distinguished Citizen Award (1998), and the Executive Service Corps Leadership Award. Most recently she and Bob were named Mr. and Mrs. Oneonta by the Future for Oneonta Foundation (2010). As a couple, the Moyers have endowed scholarships for Oneonta graduates of SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College and St. Rose. Hartwick named the Moyer Family Pool in honor of the couple’s extensive community involvement. The family’s three children swam competitively during their years in Oneonta. He was 78. A native of Holland, he was born March 13, 1936, in Tilburg, a son of Alfons and Josephina Henrika VanLoon Pÿnenburg. On January 22, 1952, Willy, his mother and seven siblings came to America. A newspaper article from January 30, 1952, best describes the family’s arrival: “A 48-year-old mother and her eight children - 4 boys and 4 girls ranging in age from 7 to 20 - are now in Cooperstown, looking forward to a new life in a new country. Mrs. Josephine Pijnenburg and
her family arrived in New York on Wednesday of last week. Instrumental in the emigration of the family to this country were Mrs. Hiram Burch, member of the local Double X Club, a 20-member women’s social group which “adopted” the family several years ago and J. Harry Cook, wellknown Cooperstown business man who has promised employment here for the oldest boy.” Willy and his family quickly settled into their new home on the corner of Walnut and Delaware Streets and into life in the Village of Cooperstown. On Aug. 31, 1958, he married Eileen Bowman in a ceremony at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. Robert Murphy officiating. Willy and Eileen then made their home on Fair Street, where they raised their
four children. An avid golfer, Willy was employed for many years as the superintendant of The Leatherstocking Golf Course. He also enjoyed playing golf with his many friends, and was a part of the group that plays every Wednesday at Leatherstocking. A member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown, Willy served his community as a member of Mechanics’ Hook & Ladder Co. No. 5 of the Cooperstown Fire Department, and served as Fire Chief from 1980-1982. New Brewery Announced, Biggest Hop Yard Visited HOPS/From A1 Cooperstown, the first growing season is underway at the largest hop yard in New York State; 11,000 plants are under cultivation under the watchful eye of the latest generation of Anheuser Busch heirs. “My family has been in the business for a long time,” said Louis Hager III, who is leading the venture with his sister, Alicia. “To get back to it on the ground level is just the most exciting thing I can think of,” Steve Miller, the Madison County Cooperative Extension agent who emceed the day, had told Allen, “We’ll probably get 40. If we get 50, it’ll be a big number.” But by the Monday before, there were 80. By Wednesday, 100. Then 10 more registered. The waiting list was 40, Allen said, so popular the tour may be repeated in September. Attendees, some growing hops, some intending to, others simply curious, and others selling supplies and equipment, came from across New York State and from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but some were also local. Tom Garretson, the Cherry Valley town supervisor, and wife Amy have planted 200 vines. Dan Rowley, who owns property where Route 205 meets Route 80 in the Town of Otsego, is considering doing so. Lonnie Ridgway, the Oneonta appraiser, was among the curious. “It’s really important that everybody does a good job of maintaining their hops’ quality,” Miller told them. “We are starting a new industry in New York. Quality will be essential.”

Allen’s demonstration of a pelletizer, newly arrived from Lawson Mills Biomass Solutions in Nova Scotia, drew particular interest: It converts the hops flowers into an inert form that can be stored until breweries need them; before the pelletizer, the hops would degrade within hours of being picked, or had to be refrigerated. Of similar interest for a similar reason was the Wolf Harvester, imported from Poland by Hager Hops in April, at the Cooperstown Brewing plant in Milford, where the group stopped for a Brooks BBQ lunch. The harvester can also be rented by any grower, replacing labor-intensive hand harvesting, which can take an hour a plant. Across the driveway from the Wolf were two new harvester manufacturers. One is being developed by John and Sarah Bonzo of Mendon, engineers at the University of Rochester and SUNY Oswego respectively, who are using their Hops-Harvester for their own vines, and were showing off their new machine, an estimated $20,000, for the first time. It can be operated in the field, powered by your standard farm tractor. “You don’t have to bring the hops to the processor,” said John. Next to them were Steenland Manufacturing’s $11,000 compact harvester, developed by Steve Steenland and his father, Pete, in the family’s welding shop in Roxbury. “People were
starting to grow hops,” explained the father. “We found most people can’t harvest fast enough.” Sam Filler, Governor Cuomo’s hops man at the Empire State Development Corp., reported only 150 acres of hops are growing statewide, “not enough to meet the potential demand.” Plus, the Farm Brewery Act, which will require 95 percent of products used in statelicensed facilities to be grown-instate by 2022, will also raise the demand for malt barley, sorghum and wheat. At $14 a pound, 1,000 pounds per acre of mature hops, hops growing is only a $1.5 million industry now, said Miller, but he expects that to grow to 400 acres in a few years, or $4 million. In the hops patch behind Ommegang, a couple of dozen varieties of hops are being grown, from Brewer’s Gold to Chinook, Mount Hood and Nugget. “We plan to reduce this in 5-10 years to a few hops that will thrive in (the Upstate) environment,” said Ommegang’s Justin Forsyth. Miller said Ommegang’s president, Simon Thorpe, has – along with federal and state grants – supported NEHA financially since arriving here in 2008, seeing a thriving network of microbreweries as helping everyone. The day’s anticipated highpoint was Hager Hops, 10 acres of vines – the first 10-acre hop yard in New York State, said Miller – on a hillside to the right on the road to Pierstown that branches off from West Lake Road, near where Anheuser Busch’s original hops were grown in the 1800s.

contd. from C-1 17. At the auction, the auctioneer’s decision regarding any disputes is final, and the auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is not an appreciable advancement over the proceeding bid. 18. The Successful Bidder will execute an Offer to Purchase form immediately upon being declared the high bidder. The “buyer’s premium” is the fee/ commission earned by the auctioneer. Accepted purchase price is the amount bid by the highest bidder, which has been approved by the Otsego County Legislature. 20. The former owner of the property, or his agent, shall not be deemed to be the successful bidder on the property or purchase same at the public auction. 21. $500.00 or 25% of the total contract price (total contract price is the combination of the high bid and the buyer’s premium, as defined in paragraph 19 of these terms and conditions), whichever is higher, shall be paid as a down payment on the day of the auction upon execution of an Offer to Purchase Form. Total contract prices selling for $500.00 or less must be paid in full at the auction, including all closing costs will be paid with the down payment on the day of the auction for each parcel, to wit: (a) New York State Transfer Tax [$2.00 for each $500.00 of the purchase/bid price]; (b) Filing Fee for the Real Property Transfer Report [$125.00 if the parcels classification code is 100-199, 200-299 or 411-C; $250.00 for all parcels otherwise classified]: (c) Filing Fee for combined Gains Transfer Tax Affidavit [$5.00]; (d) all fees required by the Otsego County Clerk for recording of the deed [$40.00 to record a one page deed; $5.00 for each additional page]; (e) an additional filing fee for Oneonta City properties [$10.00] and (f) a $20.00 surcharge. Closing costs may be subject to an increase in fees as required by law, without notice. No exceptions. Wire transfers will not be accepted. The County Treasurer may refund overage of a deposit made in excess of the total contract price plus closing costs/fees once the funds have
cleared, or apply said sum to the balance owing on the purchase price. 22. The Purchaser(s) paying by credit card(s), understands and agrees that all deposits collected by credit card(s) will be turned over to the Otsego County Treasurer. The Purchaser paying by credit card(s) agrees that they shall NOT attempt a charge back on their credit card(s) used in this/ these transaction(s) for any reason whatsoever. In such event that a charge back is initiated by Purchaser and that such attempt is upheld in favor of Auctioneer/Otsego County, Purchaser agrees and authorizes to compensate Auctioneer with a $750.00 recovery fee as a new charge to their credit card(s) without requiring additional Purchaser signature(s). Failure to pay such recovery fee will result in collection action against said Purchaser(s). AFTER THE AUCTION 23. All bids shall be subject to approval by the Otsego County Legislature, which shall have the right, in the Legislature’s sole discretion, to reject any bid for any reason whatsoever. 24. The entire balance of the accepted purchase price, the buyer’s premium, as defined in paragraph 19 of these terms and conditions, and all closing costs/fees including all taxes, costs and fee referred to in paragraphs 3 and 4 must be paid by credit card (Master Card or Visa), cash or guaranteed funds payable to and received by the Otsego County Treasurer’s Office on or before 12:00 P.M., September 19, 2014. Deed transfers will begin being processed on a first pay basis, once all sales have been approved by the County Board Meeting on September 4, 2013. The County is not required to send further notice to a purchaser. If the purchaser fails to pay the balance of the total contract price plus closing costs and fees as herein provided, the deposit shall be forfeited. The County reserves the right to bring an action for specific performance. “Time is of the essence.” 25. Purchasers of residential, improved properties will reimburse the County $50.00 at the “closing” in those cases where the County has installed smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors. 26. All parcels for which you are the highest bidder must be paid pursuant to these Terms. There will be no selective closings. Failure to remit full payment on all parcels for which you are the successful bidder will result in a forfeiture of all monies tendered, and you will not be permitted to close on any other parcels for which you were the successful bidder. 27. ful bidder fails to tender such amount due by the close of business on September 19, 2014, then the County may, but is not obligated to offer any unsold property to the second highest bidder. All terms and conditions for the sale set forth herein above shall apply to the second highest bidder and/or any other purchaser. 29. In the event that a sale is cancelled by court order or judgment, the successful bidder shall be entitled only to a refund of any deposits paid. If the bid is rejected by the Otsego County Legislature, any refund will be returned without interest. Purchasers agree that they shall not be entitled to special or consequential damages, attorney’s fees; reimbursement for any expenses incurred as a result of ownership, improvements made to the property or for taxes paid during period of ownership. 30. All sales shall be final, absolute and without recourse once title has closed and the deed has been recorded. In no event, shall Otsego County and/or Haroff Auction & Realty and Absolute Auctions & Realty be or become liable for any defects in title for any cause whatsoever, and no claim, demand or suit of any nature shall exist in favor of the purchaser, its heirs, successors or assigns, arising from this sale and conveyance. 31. Conveyance shall be by quitclaim deed only, containing a description of the property as it appeared on the tax roll for the year upon which the County acquired title or as corrected up to date of deed. The deed will be recorded by the County upon payment in full of the accepted purchase price, buyer’s premium, and closing fees/costs. POSSESSION OF PROPERTY IS FORBIDDEN UNTIL THE DEED IS RECORDED WITH THE OTSEGO COUNTY CLERK CONVEYING TITLE TO THE PURCHASER. TITLE VESTS UPON THE RECORDING OF THE DEED. It is agreed between the County and the purchaser that delivery and acceptance of the deed occurs upon recording of the deed. 32. A quitclaim deed issued as a result of the auction shall contain the following provisions: (a) “Nothing contained in any description herein is intended to convey more than the assessed owner owned at the time of the levy of the tax, the non-payment of which resulted in the tax sale. There is no representation as to the extent of the acreage conveyed herein; (b) Excepting and reserving for highway purposes a strip of land parallel to and extending twenty-five (25’) feet from the center line of any county road abutting the premises conveyed and excepting and reserving all the right, title and interest of the County of Otsego in and to any portion or interest of the lands

being conveyed, which interest was heretofore acquired other than pursuant to the provisions of Real Property Tax Law of the State of New York; (c) If the lands being conveyed herein (by the County of Otsego) do not comply with local zoning ordinances and/or are not suitable for construction of a conventional water and/or septic system and are contiguous with lands owned by the party of the second part, the lands described herein shall not be conveyed without also simultaneously conveying the contiguous lands owned by the party of the second part to the same grantee, unless the planning board approves the sale in a different configuration. This restriction will run with the land. Whenever required, the abandonment provisions of the real property tax law shall be used (Section 560 RPTL); (d) If the former owner is the grantee herein, or acquire the property within thirty-six (36) months subsequent to the date of the auction, then all liens that were of record when the County took title will thereby be reinstated, automatically by operation of law”. 33. Evictions, if necessary, are solely the responsibility of the successful purchaser. 34. The successful purchaser on each auction parcel must remove the auction sign within seven (7) days after the recording of the deed. 35. By acknowledging and executing these Terms & Conditions, the bidder certifies that he/she is not acting on behalf of the former owner(s) of the property against whom Otsego County foreclosed and has no intent to defraud Otsego County of the unpaid taxes, assessment, penalties and charges which have been levied against the property. The purchaser agrees that neither he/she nor his/her assigns shall convey the property to the former owner(s) against whom Otsego County foreclosed within thirty-six (36) months subsequent to the date of the auction. If such conveyance occurs, the purchaser understands that he/ she may be found to have committed fraud, and/or intent to defraud, and will be liable for any deficiency between the purchase price at auction and such sums as may be owed to Otsego County and consents to immediate entry of a judgment by Otsego County for said amounts (A copy of the within Terms and Conditions executed by the bidder/purchaser shall be attached to and warrant the filling of an Affidavit of Confession of Judgment.)
