ast fall, wildlife artist David Kiehm had a reckoning. By any measure, he was a success in his field. Soon after getting out of the School of Visual Design in 1990, he was a regular illustrator for Field & Stream, a coveted achievement for anyone in his field. That led to a decade as graphic director of the Danbury Mint in Norwalk, Conn., designing wildlife

commemorative coins for a national audience. Since moving back Upstate seven years ago, the professional laurels multiplied. He was regularly selected for the foremost juried shows, including the annual “Art of the Animal Kingdom” in Bennington, Vt. His works were hanging in – and selling from – The Decoy & Wildlife Gallery in Frenchtown, N.J., first in the field. Which evolved into the question: 40-something with plenty of career to go, could he reach his profession’s heights? Might he become the next Carl Rungius (1869-1959) or Bob Kuhn (1920-2007), two of Dave’s heroes, Please See ARTIST, B3 ‘Slow Jay’

Meditation On Agenda For August RINPOCHES/From B1 The younger Rinpoche is abbot of a monastery in Chapagaon in the southern Kathmandu Valley and the head of Riwoche Monastery in Tibet’s Dokham region, positions formerly held by his father. Phakchok will be leading a six-day “Nine Yanas” workshop, which will give participants an overview of the Buddhist path, with meditation, study and group discussion. He’ll also be leading a dinner lecture at Origins Café on Wednesday, Aug 21 to discuss emotions, and speaking at the Oneonta Unitarian Universalist Church Sunday, Aug. 18. “He was the reason I went to Nepal,” said Motta. “When he’s here in the summer, he always has people around him, so it’s hard to see what he’s really like. I like to see people in their natural habitat.” For his part, Chokling will lead a Fire Puja, open to the public, on Thursday, Aug. 29. “We’ll build a bonfire of cherry wood and people can burn vegetables, fruits, even gold and pearls to inspire blessings and bring benefit to all who witness,” said Motta. On their first day in Nepal, Stein and Motta got up and went to the Stupa, a monument in the dead center of the city with eyes painted on all four sides to represent the “all-knowing wisdom of the Buddha” and 13 steps at the top representing the stages of knowledge. In the early morning hours, Buddhists like Motta circumnavigate the Stupa counterclockwise for blessings. But it is not always a site of blessings – with turmoil between Tibet and China, protests, sometimes in the form of self-immolation, are not uncommon. “One morning, she went for a walk and 20 minutes after she got back, a monk self-immolated,” said Stein. “It was the first one from Nepal.”

THURSDAY-FRIDAY, AUGUST 8-9, 2013 ARTIST/From B1 gold standards in the field? Last fall, he and wife Ann, a career helpmate since the outset (you may know her as the graphics teacher at ONC BOCES), hatched on a strategy to take that final professional step in to that stratosphere: David must enter and win prestigious national and even international contests. One of the first they entered, in March, was the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year contest. A month ago, the Kiehms received exciting news: Two entries, “Foundation Wall, an oil, and the watercolor, “Slow Jay, were in the last 100 choices of the 1,400 field. A few days ago, the big news came: “Foundation Wall won one of two categories of the London-based

contest that allows worldwide participation – from as far away as Malaysia – and Kiehm is the “BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year, International Category, Birds. The Kiehms were still giddy the other day as they talked about the news in their modern-day Greek Revival style home – her third, Ann designed it from scratch – tucked amid apple trees that border the Arnold Lake State Forest. The BBC contest winners will be feted at a London reception later this month, although the Kiehms, who plan to meet with an agent in London this fall, aren’t sure whether they’ll make it. While thrilled, the artist believes “Foundation Wall is among his best. “There’s a really cohesive feel to the painting, said David, who

Artist Wins International Laurels has been immersed in nature since, as a boy, he began exploring the creek and swamp across the railroad tracks behind his Utica home. “There’s nothing you can take out. When David was entering high school, his family moved to Lansdale, Pa. After graduating from North Penn, he entered Frostburg State in western Maryland, intending to pursue fish and wildlife management, but he found the heavy science orientation deterring. About the time young David had discovered nature, he also became enamored with the wildlife art that illustrates Field & Stream magazine. He’d been drawing since he was a boy. “Why wasn’t I pursuing

art? he asked himself. The question caused his return to his native Utica and the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute’s school (where he also met his future wife); he then went on to the affiliated School of Visual Arts in New York City. Soon after graduating, he was living in Irvington and regularly freelancing for his beloved Field & Stream and like publications. By 2006, after 10 years as Danbury Mint graphics director, he was ready to shift from illustration to fine art, and he and Ann moved north to Delhi, where she had received a graphic design appointment at the SUNY college there. After a stint at Empire State College,

Saratoga, she obtained an appointment at ONC BOCES, and the couple moved to Otsego County. Back in the country, the artist found his muse in everything, in mice footprints in the snow (“Working the Hummocks), to rotting logs (“Oliver Pond), to the birds fluttering and chirping in the feeders around his home. You may think creating art is a leisurely pastime, but Kiehm’s regimen is as rigorous as any. When he awakes, his day is already planned out in his head. He’s sketching over a cup of coffee, then he’s at his easel in his second-floor studio. (Wife Ann has designed a stand-alone studio out back, now under construction.) He works intently all day. Often, after a break for supper, he’s back at it. Kiehm

produces a half-dozen large works a year, with two or three smaller ones – watercolors or studies – in between the majors. Since his research is the great outdoors, he hunts, fishes, canoes and hikes. (The past few winters, the Kiehms have gone out West to gather material.) One morning, he and his dog were ranging the Arnold Lake forest, and passed a 6foot-tall laid-stone foundation, the only remnant of a long-ago farmhouse, “cold, harsh rock with warm light coming across it. David snapped a photo to preserve the image. “Nights, I heard a great horned owl out there, calling. David concluded, “This is his house, in a lot of ways. And so “Foundation Wall was born.
