Justice Again Packs House
GINSBURG/From B1 played a starring role the past two summers. On Aug. 11, 2012, she packed The Otesaga’s 340seat ballroom, discussing and answering questions for an hour, some of it centered on Apartheid, given Kurt Weil’s “Lost in the Stars” was one of Glimmerglass’ offerings. The success of that morning program brought Ginsburg to the Alice Busch Theater Friday, Aug. 9, where she came close to filling the 914 seats with $35 ticketholders. The afternoon benefitted the festival. The selected arias culminated in “Anita’s Song,” written and performed by the judge’s daughter-in-law, Patrice Michaels. It figured a typist, recently arrived from Spain, who adjusted her thinking on gender roles by typing up the judge’s notes. The performances were fun, but Ginsburg’s comments and her Q&A stole the show. • On Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking”: “I wish Heggie’s opera could be seen by everyone before forming an opinion on capital punishment.” • On Benjamin Britten’s “Billy Budd”: “He knows Billy is good, and Claggett bad, but a sailor accused of striking an officer must hang from a yardarm.” While ordering Billy’s execution, Captain Vere concludes, “I have beheld the mystery of goodness, and I am afraid.” • Q: “Is the Supreme Court art or theater?” A: “It’s both, with a healthy dose of life mixed in.” • On Theodore Morrison’s “Oscar,” on Oscar Wilde, and overturning the Defense of Marriage Law: “It shows, yes, that society can evolve, that we all can be free to be you and be me.” She plans to attend the premiere in Santa Fe later this month. The liberal jurist described her friendship with her conservative colleague, fellow opera buff Antonin Scalia, a bit in wonder that “two people with notably different views on the Constitution can respect and genuinely like each other.” Glimmerglass’ Francesca Zambello, who emceed the afternoon, told a packed house she hopes to debut at least a selection or two from Derrick Wang’s new work, “Scalia & Ginsburg,” over the winter at the Washington National Opera, which she also directs.

‘Battle Of Djibouti’ Figured In Bios Of One, Or Two, Of Sears’ Actors 30TH/From B1 seasons, from Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” in 1984 to the American Theater Renaissance Company’s “Summer Works” this coming weekend. “He had this idea, to have a summer theater,” Maggie, a trained classical pianist, said of her husband, actor Austin Sears. “And I totally supported him.” “Everything I thought and believed about summer theater turned out to be false,” said Sears, an experienced actor, but then unfamiliar with the management challenges. “When you’re on the outside looking in, you don’t realize how much work is involved.” Maggie – Margarita Malinova – was raised in Moscow, where her father, Gerasim, who was 20 years older than mom Bella, worked for the Bolshoi Ballet. “They kept us in line,” said Maggie; both she and sister Olga were trained pianists. “But, of course, we came to America” – in 1978 – “and became free.” In February 1980, Sears’ mother came to one of Maggie’s concerts at Columbia. She took the striking brunette home, introduce her to son Austin – his initial foray into broadcasting ended when a boss declared, “You’re not an announcer, you’re an actor” – and the two married that November after a whirlwind romance.

Two years later, the adjacent four-stall garage was renovated, a screened porch added looking toward the lake, and The Barrymore Cafe was born. Lady Ostapeck frequented the plays, and her photographic portraits of the various costumed actors adorn the far wall. At the dress rehearsal, Austin – so absorbed had he been in the details of making the troupe happen – didn’t know his lines cold for the first time in his career, infuriating Kate Collins, “a very unforgiving type.” Opening night was a hit – “despite a thunderstorm”; when rainfall hammered on the barn’s tin roof, you couldn’t hear a word. FATHERS/From A1 dressed up as a samurai.” “I’m still working on it,” said Paul. “There’s no rule that says you can’t be a samurai and a priest.” The eldest son of Father Ken and St. James’ Deacon Mary Hunter, Paul was born while his dad was studying at the General Theological Society in New York City, having returned to faith after a long absence. “In college, I was a Jesus freak living on a commune and teaching Bible study,” he said. “But I drifted away from that.” While in high school, Paul continued to consider the priesthood “as one of the many things I considered, like being an actor and or an astronaut.” He attended Thomas Aquinas College in California, majoring in liberal arts. “I was very serious about my faith for a long time,”
he said. “I thought about teaching or doing grad work in philosophy, but I began to feel that I didn’t want to do something purely academic. I wanted to teach and help people.” He began considering the priesthood more seriously. “I wanted to be at the altar,” he said. “It’s a joy to tell people about the simple message of the Gospel – that in Jesus Christ, we meet God face to face. It’s a way to understand who we are meant to be, and every Sunday, we’re remembering and celebrating that. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” He attended Trinity School for Ministry, first online, then on full scholarship at the Evangelical Anglican Seminary in Ambridge, Pa. “It was the best time of my life,” he said. “You’re surrounded by people devoted to living their faith.”

He interned in New Mexico and in Washington D.C. as a hospital chaplain. And now, at Christ Church, he’s charged with developing the contemporary service. “We’ll use contemporary music and activity stations. It’s a little more free-flowing, more interactive.” As deacon at Christ Church for six month before ordination, he led services along with Father Mark Michael, the rector, and gave the children’s sermon. He also works at Oaks of Righteousness, a “safe space” in downtown Troy. “It’s a rough area, so people can come in and be safe,” he said. Paul also hopes to do missionary work in Southeast Asia. “I have a really strong love for that area,” he said. “And he can finally learn to be a samurai,” joked Kenneth.
