From Balloon Fest On Labor Day To Thanksgiving, It’s All Fall Fun

rom time to time, you hear quality of life equated with things to do. For certain, reading, strolling, or generally doing nothing – even taking a nap – are underappreciated. Still, there’s something to be said for activities that bring people together, given that we’re are, it’s said, social animals. This being a weekly publication, we digest life week to week in our columns. Our Fall Frolic experiment, however, JIM KEVLIN has required attempting to fALL fROLIC digest three whole months RUMINATIONS of goings-on, from the social start of autumn – Labor Day Weekend, not the fall equinox – to its end – Thanksgiving weekend, not the winter solstice. If varied activity enhances enjoyment, then we’re going to have a ball. Things to do – and there’s plenty – coalesced around four dates/events, (although it’s not limited to those). • One, Labor Day Weekend itself, with the Cheryl Clough/fALL fROLIC happenings we’ve come to expect – the Mums and pumpkins capture the season. Please See ACTIVITY, B4

Fall Activities Center Around Labor Day, Fests Aplenty, Halloween, Thanksgiving – Arc Otsego’s Main View Gallery, CANO, the Cooperstown Art Association, the two colleges. Sports – high school football and soccer, the Family Y and the Clark, 5K and 10K runs aplenty, a tailing off of golf tournaments, biking, hiking, birdwatching, leaf-peeping. School activities too numerous to mention, culminating in school plays in mid-November, “Les Mis” at CCS this year and “The 39 Steps” at OHS; the Thanksgiving Drago Tourney then heralds the start of basketball season. There are church din-

ners and pancake breakfast throughout. Contradances and square dances. Award dinners and commemorations (and galas wait until spring). There’s much, much more, and none of this even includes such commercial activities as dining out and going to the movies. A compilation of last year’s major activities for the Fall Frolic edition filled six pages, 8½ by 11, single space. If activity equals quality of life, we’ve got it aplenty. It’s enough to make one want to take a quiet stroll – or a nap.

ACTIVITY/From B1 Susquehanna Balloon Festival, Friday-Sunday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, in Oneonta’s Neahwa Park, with its dawn and dusk balloon rides, plus music, games and – can’t do without it – food. In Cooperstown, the traditional happenings are the Leatherstocking Brush & Palette Outdoor Art & Craft Show 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Labor Day Saturday and Sunday at the Clark Sports Center. And the parallel activity, the Cooperstown Art Association’s Fine Arts On The Lawn at Village Hall. • Two, September, The Month of Festivals – or rather, of fests. This year, Applefest, at the Fly Creek Cider Mill for the past 15 years, has expired, and Cooperstown Rotarians have joined Ommegang in celebrating with Waffles & Puppets at Brewery Ommegang Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 7-8. In past year, Applefest was part of a mid-month fest-gaggle. Two others will continue as in the past on the Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 14-15, weekend: The Farmers’ Museum’s Harvest Fest and the Susquehanna Valley Garlic Fest (Saturday only) at Wood Bull Antiques in Milford. The Sharon Springs Harvest FESTIVAL, has been pushed back a week this year, to Sept. 21-22, which bumps it against Pumpkinfest (pumpkin judging on Saturday, regatta on Sunday), that has become a mainstay of the fest season in Cooperstown. (The Native Daughters of Cooperstown’s annual luncheon is often that same weekend, but – always on the last Saturday of September – it will be a week later this year.) • Three, Halloween. The build up begins the second week of October, with such activities at the third annual Oneonta Zombie Walk at 5 p.m. on the 12th, to benefit food pantries, with pumpkin glows, lantern tours, Halloween balls, all leading up to trick or treatin’ and parades in Cooperstown, Oneonta and elsewhere on Hallow’s Eve itself, the 31st. • Four, Thanksgiving. No sooner has Halloween passed, then harvest dinners, harvest bazaars, buffets and the like follow leading up to Thursday, Nov. 28 – the holiday this year. By then, Christmas bazaars have already begun, and the fourday Thanksgiving weekend usual heralds the arrival of, yes, Santa, and the official beginning of the Christmas season as well. These are the outcroppings, but the activities are constant. Music – The Catskill Symphony Orchestra, the Met Opera simulcasts at Foothills, the Catskill Choral Society, the Cooperstown and Oneonta concert associations. Art
