THURSDAY-FRIDAY, AUGUST 23-24, 2012

When 22 Vendors Are Involved, There Are Lots Of Decisions To Make WEDDING/From B1 their special day happen – will be married Saturday, Nov. 17. The wedding package includes the dress from Rainbow’s End, the tuxes, the Holiday Inn as a venue, Gary’s Flowers’ flowers, even the cake. “Kelly Banks has done such a variety of cakes,” said Jessica. “We got all the cupcake samples in the different flavors, and picked a vanilla with raspberry filling.” They’d just returned from Binghamton, where they’d met with Marie’s All Occasion to pick out linens, chair

covers and the chaser plate for the centerpieces. Their “Starry Night” theme will be echoed with ivory, teals and blue linens. “We met with Gary’s Flowers and he’s coming back to us with what will be in season,” said Jessica. The maid of honor – or “best lady,” as Jessica calls her, will be Athena Leverock, her best friend from childhood. “We spent every waking hour together

since seventh grade,” she said. “She knows me best.” Dan had a little more trouble choosing between childhood friend David Criscolo and more recent friend Jon Ellis, so he asked them both to be his best men. “I just couldn’t pick between the two of them,” he said. So far, the best part for Jessica has been picking out the wedding dress. For Dan, it was meeting with Pastor

Teresa Sivers of First United Methodist, who will be performing the wedding. “It’s nice to meet with someone you don’t normally get to chat with one-on-one,” he said. “She answered a lot of questions.” Jessica is also doing some of the decorating out of her own budget, enlisting an Etsy seller to make tiny origami stars with messages of love printed inside to scatter on each table. “It took us

10 minutes to open one,” she said. “We’ll have to put instructions on each table” She and her mother will also be making homemade strawberry-rhubarb jam as party favors. “The rhubarb is all chopped and frozen, right from her garden,” she said. The next big event is their Couples Wedding Shower on Sunday, Sept. 9. They’ve registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond for towels, linens

and kitchen items. As they continue working to refinish their dream home, they have also asked for Lowes and Home Depot gift cards. The registry came as a surprise to Dan. “This is why the wedding hasn’t been stressful for you!” Jessica joked. PART III, the grand finale, coming in the edition of Nov. 22-23.

When Linda Burgher was growing up, her parents’ West End Diner wasn’t 1950s retro – it was the real McCoy.

The grand opening was Thursday, Aug. 16, and it was packed. “I was mopping floors until 10 p.m., Linda said. “One woman said, ‘You stole my idea! I wanted to open a ’50s diner!’ I asked, ‘Did I do a good job?’ and she replied, ‘Yes, you did.’ “We’ve got a lot of regular people already, she said. “I think Coach Mackey even cancelled soccer practice that day so the kids could come in!

Linda continued working in food, including managing the Wal-Mart deli and the Bresee’s Health Bar. When they bought the garage in 1997, Linda started her renovations. “We had the jukebox and the milkshake machine – people would come in with their cars and ask, “Hey, can I have a milkshake? We were going to start out small, but we wanted to get things done right. Old customers who remember her waiting tables bring in old photographs of her parent’s place. “There’s a lot of history here, she said. She’s actively seeking photos of the entire West End to decorate. “We’ve always had a running joke that we would have our own diner, said Heather Mann, her daughter and co-owner. The retro-themed diner also has retro prices – $4 for a burger, $2.50 for an egg cream. “We make our own soda, said Linda. “We use Fox’s syrup out of Brooklyn – if you don’t use Fox’s, it’s not a real egg cream. One thing that is decidedly not retro is the baked goods, all baked on site by Heather, which include sugar-free, gluten free and vegan. “We try to cater to everyone, she said. “Everyone deserves a cupcake.
