FootGolf? People Get A Kick Out Of It FOOTGOLF/From B1 and the American FootGolf League. “Everyone thought it was a little goofy, she said. “But when they saw English footballer Wayne Rooney and golfer Rory McIlroy playing in the video, they took it more seriously. The club converted nine holes to fit the larger buckets, but if your ball goes into the water, you don’t get another. “You have to get it out with the skimmer, said Little. Players must wear golfappropriate attire, with knee-high, argyle socks being the fashion statement of the game. “Soccer players always have those high socks, so this combines it with golf argyle, said Deirdre Little, front house manager. Players kick the brightly colored ball towards the green, where a larger hole awaits. “Balls must be

little like a golf club, Taranto pointed out. It’s a good way for families to get out on the links together, said Taranto. “The kids can play FootGolf while the parents play regular golf, she said. “They play with the bigger ball, using the same skills as in golf, then maybe they want to try to get the smaller ball into the smaller hole. And even some of the older players are getting in on the action. “Some of our golfers are coming in and joking that they’ve had their best games ever, said Taranto. “They’re asking why we didn’t get those bigger buckets before! With the colleges returning and high school soccer season getting underway, Little hopes the new sport will draw a younger crowd to the course. “Kids these days aren’t into golf, she said. “But this is something new.

Jackie was a founding member of our Auxiliary that began the path of excellence for our educational/fundraising efforts and goals. ‘Pathways To Employment’ Expands Opportunities For Disabled Workers ARC/From A1 like Bromley, the Oneonta Arc Otsego is rolling out the state-sponsored “Pathways to Employment,” designed to help individuals with developmental disabilities search for, train and hold a job. “One of the biggest parts of this program is getting people out into the community and connecting them with their goals,” said Erin Seeley, the program’s coordinator. The year-long training program combines elements of the Arc Otsego’s alreadyexisting programs, such as the one that got Ross his job, with additional programming in a comprehensive service. “In the past, people have received bits and pieces of the service, but this one is more intensified,” said Sessions. “This service is for people who have the potential to have a job, but aren’t quite ready to find one.” The Pathways program is individually tailored towards the individual. “They practice writing resumes, mock job interviews and how to deal with stress on the job,” said Seeley. “It’s both the community and the classroom aspect.” Additionally, students will go out into the community and shadow potential employers to see what kind of job might suit them best. “A lot of people don’t know what their goals are,” said Seeley. “We want them to see what’s available.” Anyone can sign up for the program, but Seeley hopes to target students coming right out of school and is working with businesses to help train or showcase what it is they do.
“For example, the restaurant at the Holiday Inn isn’t open for lunch, so they’d let our students come in and see the whole gamut of the kitchen,” she said. “They can try out the entire experience of food service without the stressors of an open restaurant.” It’s a valuable resource, said Sessions, that employers can easily tap into. “A third of people who’ve gone through our programs have held their jobs for over ten
years,” she said. “It’s an untapped workforce that can really make a difference.” And it helps them feel at home in their communities. “It’s very rewarding to these individuals to have a job,” said Seeley. “They find it very rewarding, they have a smile on their face when they come to work.” And employees like Ross make that smile contagious. “He makes us laugh, he gives us less stress,” said Hunter. “We all love him.”

People Will Be Asked To Participate In ‘Charrette’ Week On Village Future VISION/From A1 Design, Saratoga Springs, manned the table – was the first toe in the water on what promises to be a season of sampling, the expressing of opinions and envisioning what Cooperstown might be (or what essentials must be preserved.) “There will be a series of pro-active measures,” said Mayor Jeff Katz, “where they (Elan representatives) are in the field. They’re going to Main Street. They’re going to community dinners. They want to know from us where the people are.” Nagle’s appearance over the weekend is the first step in a comprehensive planning collaboration between the Village Board and the Otsego County IDA (Industrial Development Authority). The goal is, through surveys and community meetings, a consensus can be built on a strategy for Cooperstown’s development. The process will also develop the marketing data needed to attract investment to the village, according to IDA President Sandy Mathes. Katz said he’s being approached by people who want to know why they haven’t been asked for their input; he tells them the process has just started. The central part of the process – a “charrette week” – will come in October, said Nagle, who over 25 years has been involved in similar and related undertakings from Ticonderoga to Catskill and the Capitol Region to Binghamton. Similar to what a team of Notre Dame graduate students in 2007, “there’s a public meeting the first night,” said Nagle. “We work for the next two days, digesting information we get Monday night. We’ll be accessible. Thursday night, we’ll present back to the public: This is what we heard from you. Did we get it wrong? Did we get it

right?” With continuing public discussion, Nagle and her team will continue to develop the data into a community plan. In all, this should be an eight-month process, she said. Whereas the Notre Dame effort was aimed at fulfilling a graduate school requirement, this is aimed at a plan of action. The process to date is being funded by the village and the IDA, but a CFA – the common funding ap-
plication required to access state economic-development money – has been submitted to underwrite the whole effort. A decision on this round of CFAs – Cooperstown is also seeking funds to begin the 22 Main renovations – is expected from Governor Cuomo’s office by mid-October. The planning grant has already been approved by the Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Commission, a necessary intermediary step.
