Depression-Era Stone Gem Rehabbed As Park Police HQ By LIBBY CUDMORE NEW LISBON

treasure is tucked high in the hills around Gilbert Lake. Not pirate’s gold or a hidden castle, but a oncecrumbling historic building made new and useful again. Maintenance Building #1 was built during the Depression of the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, jobless young men deployed in work parties as part of FDR’s New Deal.
The granite and cement building was mostly used for storage and carpentry work until quite recently, when the Park Police and park managers renovated the building into park police headquarters that were formerly at Glimmerglass State Park. “We rebuilt stonework and did new wiring,” said Park Manager Thom Goetzmann. “It took a lot of detail to make sure the outside appearance stayed as it originally was.” The construction project caught the eye of Cory

A Reminder That Art Matters
or a community next to a lake with a poetic name, Glimmerglass, what could be more fitting than an art exhibition devoted to 30 American Impressionists? The term “impressionism” is itself reduced and altered in so many meanings, however, that it may confuse – or escape any easy schoolroom definition. One of the advantages of the term
and all its forms is its elegant distortion, a sophisticated breaking of expectation – and with it, the frustration of any simple explanation. Seeing the techniques of the 30 American artists and a single French painting by Claude Monet in this style must remind us of several hard facts about Upstate New York: first, its remarkPlease See EXHIBIT, B3

EXHIBIT/From B1 able artistic heritage, secondly its generosity of patronage. These achievements are most often associated with cities – not the rural and rolling hills of an agricultural past and present. The show, that will continue at The Fenimore Art Museum through Sept. 16, with its 30 American paintings, George Bruestle to Guy Wiggins, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam to Maurice Prendergast, should remind everyone of the culture and informed care the past gives us – and should further remind us of the educational responsibility to grant these civic virtues to the future. The definition of Impres-
sionism, however – how to approach it? Photographs, with their pretense of reality, are on close examination technical abstractions – and nobody should think of them as “reality. Yet that is their chief illusion – though any single moment is not “reality’’ – despite the absurd claim. One of the techniques of the paintings on Fenimore display is “pointillism, the making of a scene with dots of paint – notably used by Georges Seurat. The technique, while revolutionary, is paradoxically related to printing and photography itself. Any photo under high magnification resolves into abstract
points – which become “a picture only with a different and more distant perspective. All, then, are a mere illusion of “reality – not even a “speaking picture, and certainly not “worth a thousand words. A final observation about this remarkable showing. The American artist in all forms is tirelessly but tediously compared with European, with English, with almost any foreign “masters. Doesn’t anybody read Emerson’s “Self-Reliance anymore? In themselves, the achievements of American culture are remarkable if not stupendous. This elegant show proves it.

The police station was the second phase of the project, filling in what Goetzmann called “crowded, overused storage space. Gesturing to the clean, cabinet-lined room, he added, “You wouldn’t have known there was this much space in here. The park police station is a fully functional station. “There’s more camping, more usage here, so it made sense to move the park police here from Glimmerglass,

said park ranger Tom Lopiccolo. “This can be used by any agency – if there’s a trooper or a sheriff that needs to process somebody, they can do it here. Pope and Otsego 2000 were impressed by the reuse of space. “It would have been very easy for them to say that it wasn’t going to work for them, but they made it functional, she said. “We’re expected to be historic and be aware of this kind of cultural reuse, Telarico said. “I nominated us to recognize the guys who did all the work.
