rancis Russo, the former Oneonta fire chief who passed away earlier this summer, didn’t get the nickname “Cootie” amid playground horseplay. “When he was playing football, his teammates said he was fast, light and maneuverable, like the Cootie airplane,” said his wife, Sheila, a reference to the lightweight 1919 Waco Cootie. “The name stuck. You tell people about Francis, they have no idea who you’re talking about. Everyone here knew him as Cootie.” That nickname – as well as his full name – will soon adorn a plaque at a new addition to Sixth Ward Booster Club play-

Burke Premier Play Environments of Fond du Lac, Wisc., the nation’s oldest playground company. “After dad passed away, we were thinking of ways to memorialize him that would reflect his years of service to the community,” said son Frank Jr. “I was out running, and I came up with the idea to build a playground. It has the chance to impact kids for years, and it’s unique – no other place around here has one like it.” Please See RUSSO, B2

“People think it’s a museum,” he said of the old train station. “And they think we’re magic.” Witham and his son and partner in Contractor’s Mill-
work, Steve, build windows the way they were built in the 18th and 19th centuries for proud homeowners who want to restore their older homes to exactly the way they were. And there’s a reason why there’s not a lot of competition in the business. “Window restoration is one of the most trying things in the industry,” said the father. “The joiners” – a type of carpenter who cuts and fits Please See WOOD, B3

Fire Chief Memorialized In Sixth Ward Playground RUSSO, From B1 The Booster Club playground sits behind the Russo homestead on Scramling Avenue, where Sheila and Cootie used to watch the Pee-Wee football teams, lacrosse and Little League games, and Oneonta Stallions practice. “It’s a beautiful spot for a beautiful playground,” Mrs. Russo said. Her husband used to help main-
tain the fields and built the original playground, a task that her son helps carry on. When the former chief was confined to a lift chair, the back room was converted so he could continue to watch the kids play in comfort. “My mother will always be able to look out the window and see part of my dad,” said Frank. “It’s his last big hurrah.”
Burke Premier Play Environments provided this artist’s rendering to the Russos.
Frank has already begun to write grants and seek local contributions for the playground, and money from the Lower Deck Dash 5K on Sunday, Sept. 8 will also go towards the fund. He anticipates the playground will be built in fall 2014. “He gave the best of himself to the firehouse and the community,” said Sheila. “He really loved it down here.”

authentic.” Among many contracts, the Withams, who live in South Valley, Town of Roseboom, restored the front windows at the Beekman Boys’ 1802 Mercantile, their shop in downtown Sharon Springs, and have done many projects at The Farmers’ Museum, as well as The Fenimore. Currently they’re restoring windows at the First Baptist Church in Cooperstown, as well as the wide glass front of the former O.S. Burch General Store that Paul and Martha Clarvoe are renovating in the hamlet of Hartwick. When the Withams build windows, the wood is all local, and many of the machines came from the area, including an 1860s woodnail maker from the Cherry Valley Chair Factory. “We don’t use any glue,” he said. “It’s all mortise-and-tenon joints and wooden nails.” They also salvage glass and reuse it in their windows. “We’re probably the only place in the country that has a stockpile of period glass,” he said. “Otherwise, they take out these beautiful windows and throw them in the dumpster,” Stephen added. It’s the ultimate in going green, Witham said. They keep the glass and hardware from windows they salvage to build and repair new windows. They even use the wood shavings to heat the shop. Stephen picked up on his father’s interest in the machinery at a very early age. “He was here working on this machinery since he was 9,” said the father. “It would be hard for me to find anyone else with that kind of experience!” Contractor’s Millwork was featured on the PBS show, “Woodwright’s Shop.” And the shop was used as a setting in truTV’s “Forensic Files” episode that dealt with the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, focusing on the piece of wood used to make the ladder found in Bruno Hauptmann’s home. “They looked around the country and found only three places that looked authentic,” Alden said. “It’s unusual to make a living doing this,” he said. “Usually, you just see these things in a museum.”

Jack Beal, 82, North Franklin, Nationally Renown Artist NORTH FRANKLIN – Jack Beal, 82, whose artwork is displayed in many of country’s major museums, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 29, at Fox Hospital.
In 1973, he and his wife, artist Sondra Freckelton, moved to North Franklin near a waterfall and stream that figured in his paintings, prints and drawings. Jack Beal, (www.jack-

He studied biology, journalism and art at the College of William & Mary, Norfolk Division, before enrolling in 1953 in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where he met his future wife. The couple married in 1955 and moved to New York City in 1956 to begin their careers in the art world. Beal’s first major solo exhibition in New York was at the Allan Frumkin Gallery,

Local people and friends from New York City were models for the works. Costumes were borrowed from SUNY Oneonta and research was done in the libraries of both Hartwick and SUNY. The murals were dedicated in 1977 at a ceremony that included dignitaries and many people who posed for the murals. Every day, thousands of New Yorkers pass by two of Jack’s major works of art. His two glass-tile mosaics are imbedded in the walls of the 41st Street IRT mezzanine in the Times Square Station. Each of the 7-by-20-foot works (commissioned by the Art in Transit Initiative) updates the Greek myth of Persephone being abducted by Hades, thus initiating the arrival of winter, and her release, which brought the bountiful return of spring. The setting for this retelling of the myth is the New York subway system, and Beal included himself and friends in the crowds watching Persephone. In one mural he appears as the operator of a jack hammer – pun intended; and in the other he is the man looking hopefully towards the heavens. In the monograph “Jack Beal” (Hudson Hills Press, 1993), author Eric Shanes wrote that the artist’s “pushing of representational forms to their interface with abstraction has been responsible for the creation of some of the most striking

Sondra wishes to thank everyone at Fox Hospital who contributed to Jack’s comfort and care. A celebration of the artist’s life, loves and are is planned 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
