On a hot summer’s day, the Van Hornesville native who was General Electric president, and the founder of RCA and NBC, would stop by the R.G. Ehrmann Prescription Pharmacy, the drug store at Main and Lake, for a cooling soft drink. But, then, George Ehrmann – and a few remaining people like him who once ran small-town pharmacies across the U.S. – knows things that very few of the rest of us know or remember, some of which he and wife Joyce shared during an interview at their Craftsman bungalow on Elm Street the other day. about Galenicals. Or about Kelling’s Double Kay nut machine. Or Squibb’s Pendistran. Or when Hallmark cards were a novelty. Or when pharmacies had ice cream counters where soda
jerks mixed mysterious elixirs from closely guarded family recipes, and fancy wire chairs were set up at round-top marble tables, ala “It’s a Wonderful Life.” For a half-century, pharmacy and the Ehrmann name were synonymous in Richfield Springs: from 1931, when George’s father Raymond saw an opportunity and opened a store (where Carmella Chiodo’s consignment shop is now), until 1983, when, the dominance of drug-store chains looming, the son closed up shop and joined a Delaware County hospital as its fulltime pharmacist. First, the terms: • Galenicals – the name goes back to Galen, the father of pharmacy from ancient times – were herbal medicines pharmacists prepared for ailing customers. • Put in a penny, and a Kelling Double Kay Nut Dispenser, distributed nationwide by a comPlease See EHRMANN, B3

Family Inspired LuAnn To Caring Careers GRANPA, From B1 and the neighbors would all come out. They knew they were all getting meat packages. Lou Mattio, LuAnn’s namesake, was a conductor for the Long Island Railroad. “He always had his uniform and his pocket watch, she said. “I was fascinated by it. I still have a thing for pocket watches, because of him. Her mother was divorced, and Lou served as her substitute father. “He was a good role model, she said. Lou was also a fan of the horse races, but never at the expense of his family. “My grandmother always said that if he could, he would have married a horse, said LuAnn. “But there was a new car in the driveway every year and dinner on the table for 22 people each week, she said. “He’d play a dollar or two on the races. Even when he was dying of cancer, LuAnn still took him to the track after chemo, even if it meant lying to Mildred about why they were late coming back to keep him out of trouble with his wife. “He had his fedora, his sneakers and his racing form, she said. “He had a hot dog, placed a few bets – it made him happy. When he passed away, he left $6,000 of his racing money, which he kept hidden behind a ceiling tile, to LuAnn. “We buried him in his fedora, his sneakers and with a racing form, she added. “I asked him to send me a sign for a good horse. Mildred, Lou’s wife, was known for making enormous, elaborate Sunday
dinners for her large family. “You had to be there, LuAnn said. “Death was the only way out. Mildred had two stoves, one in the upstairs kitchen and another in a basement kitchen. It was an hours-long affair; after dinner, the family would fight for space to nap. “My Uncle got the sofa, last one got the floor, she said. “We’d sleep for an hour and then go down for dessert. “The thing that made my grandmother happiest was keeping the house and making sure everyone was there, she said. Her other grandmother, Ethel Zipp, was a stewardess for Pan Am. “She called me one time and said, ‘LuAnn, you gotta help me – I’m an 18-year-old trapped in an 80-year-old body! She laughed. “So I had one grandmother who never left the kitchen and another one who was never home – she traveled all over. After a hip replacement, Ethel had spent the weekend at Rocking Horse Ranch in the Catskills, much to her granddaughter’s surprise when she learned about it. “I asked her, ‘How can you get on the horse, you just had a hip replacement?’ and she said, ‘Don’t worry, two nice young gentlemen lifted me onto the horse’. Slowly, the family has migrated from Queens, and last year, LuAnn joined them. But her family has clearly inspired both her careers, from the catering business she ran for 17 years to her current goal of getting her degree in medical assistance. “I want to cater to people in different ways.

Fun Times, Busy Times, And An Occasional Adventure At Ehrmann Prescription Drugs EHRMANN/From B1 pany founded by three brothers in Milwaukee, would dispense actual warm peanuts. • Pendistran was the brand name for the treatment of cows for mastitis. The Ehrmann pharmacy, serving a farming community as it did, was among the first to get into veterinary products. • Hall Brothers’ cards became Hallmark in 1928, and Ehrmann’s became one of the first stores in Central New York to carry them, receiving letters of commendation over the years from Joyce Hall, the company’s founder. “You can’t make a sale from an empty shelf,” father Raymond used to say, and
the Ehrmann family embraced that maxim. The “want book,” where items to be reordered were listed, was constantly updated. George and Joyce – she tended the front counter for years, while he, in white coat and tie, held sway in the pharmacy – can tick off a range of offerings: Coty, Revlon and Maybelline cosmetics, Timex watches and Westclox alarm clocks, Russell Stover and Schraft’s chocolates and candy, Lifesavers, Toni Home Permanents – “Which Twin Has The Tony? Vicks’ products, and Pertussin among the patent medicines. And newspapers! Sundays, teens working for Ehrmann – they included Ron Frohne, father of today’s
Richfield Springs mayor, and “too many wonderful people to mention” – would get to work at 6 a.m. to fold more than 200 of the bulky Sunday editions that would be sold that day. “It was so crowded after church, you couldn’t even get into the store,” Joyce said. (Midweek, a line would form, anticipating the arrival of the weekly Richfield Springs Mercury.) There were fun times. When Chuck Kreis, one of the young clerks, would submerge through the trap door into the basement, he would echo the submarine whistle of 1950s submarine movies – UG-ga, UG-ga, UG-ga. To make sure the clerks got to work on time on Sundays, George would

set a half-dozen Westcloxes, one for 6, then at 2-minute intervals, and hide them around the store; if any had wound down, George knew. And there were busy times. Joyce and her mother-in-law would gift wrap more than 200 boxes of candy leading up to Valentine’s Day. “We sold thousands of gallons of ice cream” – Sealtest – “a year,” said George. “I don’t remember how much, but it was a lot. Some days we were taking in $200 – and ice cream was a nickel for quite a few scoops.” In appreciation for their employees’ contribution, the Ehrmanns, after a very busy Christmas Eve, would close the shop at 5, and “wonderful” Christmas parties would follow into the evening. Raymond G. Ehrmann grew up in Herkimer, where his father had moved from Germany around the turn of the 20th century and where uncle Ed Sodolosky ran a drug store; he played football at Colgate, but – following his Uncle Ed’s lead – switched to Albany College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1924. After stints in Herkimer and booming Amsterdam, then “Carpet Capital of the World,” he learned of the Richfield Springs opportunity and move there with his wife, Marguerite Hayes of Ilion. Soon, they had three children: Jeanne Marie Palmer, who now lives in Rome, George, and Edward, who taught high school in Saugerties, passing away a

year ago December. (Jimmy Fallon, one of his students, recalled “Mr. Ehrmann” as his favorite teacher on his show the other week.) Most of George Ehrmann’s boyhood memories center around the pharmacy, where he was folding newspapers and washing windows by age 10. He remembers his dad as “a very good man, very civic minded,” who ushered at St. Joseph Church, and was president of the local Rotary and grand exalted ruler of the Herkimer Elks. He participated in the effort, unsuccessful in the end, to get a state park built at the north end of Canadarago Lake. In the summers, migrant workers abounded, picking corn and beans; some lacked shoes, and if the elder Ehrmann saw a barefoot worker, he would buy him a pair at Ruby’s or Forman’s. The 1930s – George was born in 1932 – saw the waning of Richfield Springs’ heyday as a resort; it had once hosted 19 grand hotels, but only the Bloomfield remained, (where the post office and Tally-Ho are today); as a boy, George bobbed for apples there at Halloween. World War II dominated

the ‘40s. As if it were yesterday, George remembers walking home through a light snow from a movie at the Conery’s Capitol (next to today’s vets’ club) with his sister; their mother greeted them with the news of Pearl Harbor. The pharmacy housed the Western Union office, and a halfdozen times during the war years, bad news arrived by telegram. “When you saw Mr. Ehrmann coming with a yellow envelope,” people used to say, “maybe the news was good; maybe it wasn’t.” That sad task tore up his father, the son said. Graduating from Richfield Springs Central School in 1950, young George went off to his father’s alma mater and there, one evening in Papa’s Bar, he met Joyce LaVassaur, an Albany Business College student from Tupper Lake. The two married soon after graduation, and sons Greg and Eric followed in 1955 and 1957. (Both retired as lieutenant colonels after careers in the Marines and Army respectively.) Another lifelong connection George established in Albany – with a fellow member of Kappa Psi, the pharmacists’ fraternity – was with Ed Badgley, who after a post-graduate stint in Florida bought Withey’s Pharmacy in Cooperstown, along with Hank Phillips. (Always a kidder, when Ed met Joyce for the first time, he spun her around, then declared: “My God, woman, you’re not as bad as he said you were.”) For years, father – he retired in 1967, and passed away in 1978, age 75 – and son would work 8 to 8, six days a week, and until 5 p.m. on Sundays. But they could spell each other, and Uncle Ed – and George Getzlek, who also operated the Terrace Hotel on Sylvan Street – would help out as well. “It was a lot of work,” said the son the other day, “but it was a very rewarding thing to do – helping people. Plus, you could make a pretty good living at it.” And there was an occasional adventure. George, a member of the National Ski Patrol, and the boys often skied at Mount Otsego in Pierstown. EHRMANN/From B3 from a farm outside Jordanville. State troopers drove the pharmacist as far up Route 167 as they could, but George went the rest of the way on skis – Alpine, yet – in blinding snow, guided only by tall trees lining the route. The New York State Thruway wasn’t completed until 1957 – “when that opened up, the traffic fell off immediately; it didn’t take longâ€? – so Route 20 was the main travel route from Albany west, and Owen D. Young wasn’t the only VIP to stop by. New York Yankees manager Joe McCarthy lived in Buffalo, and would pause at Ehrmann’s to send a telegraph to his family, letting them know he’d soon be home. (The Ehrmanns still have a bat he autographed.) Another time, Alexander Sikorsky, the helicopter maker from Bridgeport, Conn., stopped by for a soda en route to Jordanville, where he was graduation speaker that afternoon at Holy Trinity Monastery’s seminary. Vanity plates were a novelty, so the license plate on his bright blue VW Beetle, “SIKORSKY,â€? caused a stir. George and Joyce soon had a VW bug of their own, and – with the boys squeezed in the back and skis sticking of out the sun roof – they’d drive to Tuckerman’s Ravine, or

to Tupper Lake to visit the inlaws. (Once, George’s father-in-law woke him up at 6 a.m. to point out the reading on the thermometer – 45 below.) Owning their own businesses also allowed the Ehrmanns and Badgleys – Ed and wife Joan – to pursue an intense interest in jazz. The two men – George on trumpet and fluglehorn; Ed on clarinet, and tenor and soprano sax – were in the Cooperstown Community Band for years. They still play in a combo, and you may have heard them performing at Cooperstown Hawkeye games. (The Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, the pals played an impromptu concert for a couple of hours in Cooperstown’s Pioneer Park.) One winter’s night, the two couples drove through a storm to the Lion’s Den in Troy to hear Dizzy Gillespie. He opened the door when they arrived and asked, What are you doing here? We came to hear you, was the reply. “Well, get in here, the jazz great said. With only one other patron, asleep with his head on the bar, Gillespie’s combo played all four sets for the Otsego County foursome. George and Ed also sailed together, and for 49 years – with George in line for a hip replacement, the 50th year hasn’t happened yet – they were charter members, and the only members,
of the DGA, the Duffers’ Golf Association. Once a year, the DGA members would play golf on a different course, one neither had played on before, from St. Andrews in Hastings-on-Hudson to Colgate’s Seven Oaks to the Lachute Golf & Country Club in Quebec. Most memorable was playing The Monster, that 7,200-yard hole at the old Concord Hotel in the Catskills. George had an unfulfilled career wish, to become a hospital pharmacist. He’d resisted – he ran Richfield Springs’ only pharmacy; what would his customers do? But new competition in 1983 gave him the opportunity, and he joined the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, where he worked until 2006. He took his work ethic with him; despite the 100-mile daily round trip, he only missed one day of work. “I’ve had a pretty good life, I dare say, he reflected. Still, George Ehrmann keeps some secrets close; for instance, the recipe to the chocolate syrup in those long-ago ice-cream sodas concocted in the apothecary shop at Main and Lake. He will say the basic ingredient was Van Houten Cocoa, imported from Holland in 50-pound wooden barrels. “People knew it was homemade stuff – and it was beautiful.

Frank T. Buck, 92; Navy Veteran Survived Sinking of USS Pollux COOPERSTOWN – Frank T. Buck, 92, who survived the sinking of the USS Pollux, one of the worst tragedies in Naval history, died Saturday Sept. 1, 2012. Born June 12, 1920, in Freeport, he was the eldest of Frank L. and Mabel (Lande) Buck’s four sons. He grew up on Long Island, but always considered his home to be the Middlefield farm his parents bought in 1950. He joined the Navy in 1938, serving for 30 years and during three wars. In the early hours of Feb. 18, 1942, running without lights
or radio communication while searching for German submarines, his ship, the destroyer USS Pollux, and the destroyer USS Truxtun, ran aground and quickly sank in a violent gale and dense fog off Newfoundland. More than 200 of the sailors perished, but he and others made it to nearby cliffs where they were pulled from the frozen ledges by local villagers. The tragedy is still remembered as one of the worst in Navy history. On June 28, 1942, he married Flora Barbara Merkt; they had met while working in New York City in the late 1930s. She passed
