rom the sounds of laughter and singing in the back yard of the Hayden Creek Inn, you’d think this was a regular Saturday night cookout. But the guests at the barbecue aren’t just friends stopping by – that laughter is a piece of the healing journey of the Rwandan genocide. They are celebrating their survival. “This is the first gathering of its kind,” said Eugenie Mukeshimana, founder of the Genocide Survivors Support Network and the organizer of the event. “We’re

all seeking the connection and that support.” During 100 days between April 7, 1994, and mid-July, over one million

Tutsi people were murdered by Rwanda’s Hutu majority. Eugenie was 8 months pregnant with her daughter, Mystica, when the Tutsis’ slaughter began. “I had friends betray me,” she said. “I had strangers who helped me survive. I had to have my baby in hiding.” She stayed in Rwanda helping other survivors until 2001, when she moved to Newark, N.J., and founded the network. “I interviewed Holocaust survivors to try and figure out how to live with what we have inherited,” she said. “I have always felt that I have a privilege to work with my fellow survivors, to keep track of what we all struggle with.” Eugenie used her network not only Please See SURVIVORS, B3

Friday, Sept. 5, 18 Rwandan survivors came from as far away as Maine, Utah and Atlanta, Ga., for the threeday retreat, to bear witness, share coping strategies and to enjoy simply being alive. “For many of us, it’s the first time we’re allowing ourselves to go back in our memories,” said Eugenie. “Just because it’s been 20 years doesn’t mean it’s over for us. For many, we are going back to see what we can salvage, like you do after a tornado or a house fire.” As for Manaise Shingiro, he copes with his memories by painting. “I was 9,” he said. “I lost my father, four grandparents, five uncles, six aunts and a lot of friends.” He and his brother, like so many others, were sent to live in an orphanage. He moved to the United States in 2010 and now lives in Portland, Maine, but when his brother returned to the orphanage for a visit, he sent him a photo that struck him deeply. “This boy, his parents were our neighbors,” he said. “He was 2 months old when his father was killed. I saw this photograph and I said, ‘I need to paint this picture.’ It’s so emotional.” He brought many of his paintings to Springfield Center, and Glynis plans to sell them next year at the Inn. “There’s so much talent here,” she said. Most importantly, the retreat was a chance to connect, face to face, with others who share their traumatic past. “We are brothers and sisters, even though many of us are the soul survivors of our families,” said Eugenie. Eugenie hopes to host a women’s retreat at the Inn in the future, and to continue the work they did over the weekend throughout the rest

of the year. “It’s been a cascade of different emotions – sadness, inspirations, feelings of family and togetherness,” said Glynis, looking out the window to where the group was laughing over lunch on the Inn’s manicured lawn. “I’m getting goosebumps.”

Douglas Kent Haunted By Beloved Hyde Hill – One Time, Literally KENT/From B1 included the blueprints for a mansion in Upstate New York, Hyde Hall. “I’d never seen a house like that,” he said. “The stone paved courtyard – it just took my breath away.” He went up to Hyde Hall in 1965 with an architect from Syracuse who was making a study of the house for the state. “They wanted to convert it into a training center for state employees,” he said. “We put the kabosh on that pretty quick!” Inside, it was just as beautiful as he’d imagined. “I felt the same way I did when I first saw that floor plan,” he said. “I was overwhelmed. It was a continuation of that childhood inter-

est, and it was all available for me to get at.” But there was plenty work that had to be done to restore the home to its former glory. “There were puddles on the floor from the leaky roof,” he said. “The floors shook under my feet from dry rot. The state had to put up ‘Danger: Do Not Enter’ signs around it.” He immediately joined the Friends of Hyde Hall and set to work helping

preserve the house. He took measured drawings of the rooms and began attacking the dry rot in the baseboards with bleach. “It’s the biggest danger to a house like this,” he said. “It gets in through the brick, and it can completely destroy a house.” The menace was eradicated and, bit by bit, he and the rest of the Friends began to clean up the house, restoring the libraries and servants

quarters, bringing furniture down out of the attic and storage. “It was a long, gradual process, but we’ve got a good work crew,” he said. “We wanted to get things back to the way they had been.” He’s even had a run-in with some of the house’s distinguished deceased. “When the moon is full, the light reflects off the courtyard and into the corridors – you don’t need a flash-

light,” he said. “I turned into the upper rear corridor and I had a sensation I’d never had before or since. “I couldn’t hear, smell, see or feel anything. I was so frightened that I walked out and then went back in and everything was all right. So what was it? I don’t know, but I know it was some kind of spirit.” But despite that one spooky encounter, Kent still feels an immense affection

for the house. “It grows on people,” he said. “The charm of this home really lingers.” He’s served on the board as the acting president, the executive vice president, vice president and a board member. And although he lives in Bedford, Westchester County, he still contributes to the well-being of Hyde Hall. “I attached myself and I’m not letting go!” he said.

On 125th Birthday, SUNY Remembers

125TH/From A1 ment to values, he said, keynoting a luncheon celebrating “Red Day.” Brenner quoted the first “principal,” the title then, James A. Milne: “I see the possibilities full of promise. Today we dedicate, tomorrow we change possibility into reality.” Milne was president until 1898, when Percy Bugbee was appointed. In one of his final speeches, Milne told the gathered faculty, “Institutions are greater than men. This institution is greater than any man or set of men.” Bugbee, Brenner said, was persistent, building up enrollment and encouraging teachers to teach at rural schools. He told 1911 graduates, “The greatest consideration of one’s life is to do right,” and in 1927, “Have a smile for disaster, a cheer for every brave deed, a hand quick to help, and a heart warm with everyday human kindness.” But Bugbee didn’t fully utilize by these virtues in his faculty, denying teachers the opportunity to pursue higher degrees or new ideas. Dr. Charles Hunt, who took over the presidency in 1933, encouraged faculty to collaborate, use visual aids and focused on establishing the college “up the hill,” the foundation for which would become SUNY Oneonta. For Dr. Royal Netzer, 1951-1960, those values were shown on the ground. “He was frequently seen in a ditch inspecting a waterline or determining of a bid specification was

being met,” said Brenner. “He presided over the greatest period of growth the college has seen.” Dr. Clifford Craven presided over the college during the Vietnam War. “We had people teaching students to make pipe bombs,” he said. “We had to identify these people and deal with them.” But the individual was of the utmost important to Craven. “He opened more outreach programs to the community,” said Brenner. “The decade was spent focusing on the individual students.” When SUNY insisted that the college add 300 to its enrollment, Dr. Alan Donovan refused. “He didn’t want this to be a place where you came if you’d failed to get into four or five other schools,” said Brenner. “This was a selective school.” It was a daring tactic, but one that worked. Alumni are proud of their alma mater, and continue to show their support in pledges to the school’s “Possibilities Full of Promise,” fundraising drive, already totaling $10.5 million of the $12 million goal. It is under Dr. Nancy Kleniewski’s leadership that those values have continued, Brenner credited, making SUNY Oneonta the recipient of multiple national honors and awards. “Her values are Oneonta’s,” said Brenner. “And we can wish for nothing more.”

IDA Takes Option On 137 Acres For Commerce Park At Richfield PARK/From A1 mid-October. The motion to approve the option was made by Richfield Spring’s representative on the IDA board, architect Jim Jordan. The vote was unanimous. “It’s a very good deal,” IDA President Sandy Mathes said during the board’s monthly meeting at 189 Main, Oneonta. “It has all the elements of infrastructure that we need.” Also at the meeting, progress was reported on IDA consultant Delaware Engineering’s effort to bring the remaining acreage in the Town of Oneonta’s longstanding Pony Farm Commerce Park up to “shovel ready” status. At state Sen. Jim Seward’s second “Seward

Summit” on economic development last November at Foothills in Oneonta, industrial recruiter Dick Sheehy of the CH2M Hill consultant firm told the gathering companies looking to build new facilities require “shovel ready” sites, with all permitting in place and infrastructure available. The Richfield property is the first fresh site being explored. Richfield Town Supervisor Fran Enjem said he was briefed by Mathes two weeks ago on progress, and Enjem expects he’ll attend the next town board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, to bring the board and public up to date. The land in question – 110 acres of the total is considered suitable for development – is that open hill

that extends north and east from the corner of Lake and Cemetery. It has “redundant power,” the IDA board was told, both electricity from a nearby NYSEG substation and natural gas from the Tennessee Pipeline that runs along Route 20. It also has proximity, not just to Route 20, but to Interstates 90 and 88. Foremost, it is on the end of the county closest to the $1 billion nanotechnology center that is due to be completed in 2015 at SUNY/IT in Marcy, north of Utica. In addition to the “tech sector,” Mathes said the commerce park could be used for processing ag products, warehousing or a data center. Joseph Kozak died in 1987 and his widow, Lottie, in 2012. A son and two daughters survived. The 12-month option approved by the IDA would require no payment for the first year. It could be extended for another six months for $25,000, and then another six months for $75,000. Those payments would not be refundable, but could be applied to the purchase price. If the option is acted on, the IDA would pay $7,500 an acre for the 1,100 developable acres, and $2,500 for the less desirable 26.97 acres, for a total of $886,440. While the initial development grant is for $1.2 million, the MVREDC application estimates there would be room for $7.5 million in development at the park. The application estimates 75 construction jobs would be created over five years, but – depending on what businesses might be attracted there, the total could be significantly more.

THURSDAY-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11-12, 2014

Joann S. Rasmussen, 90; Hartwick College Benefactor, ECS Founder WALTON – Joann Spain Rasmussen, 90, founder of the Oneonta chapter of the Executive Service Corps and a Hartwick College benefactor, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at home, atop rolling farmlands, surrounded by love. Born April 10, 1924, in Queens, a graduate of Smith College ‘46, Joann worked at IBM and was married for 60 years to Arthur Rasmussen, who predeceased her in 2008. Joann lived a dynamic life of generous-spirited activism. While raising four children in Montclair N.J., in the 1950s and ’60s, Joann engaged actively in Planned Parenthood and Fair Housing (a community campaign to integrate

white suburban enclaves). She also became a certified

teacher and tutored illiterate adults. Upon moving to Chicago in 1968, she was active in the Reading is Fundamental literacy program and Executive Service Corps (ESC), a nationwide nonprofit service that pairs retired executives with struggling community start-ups. Upon retirement to the Catskills in 1990, she launched the ESC chapter in Oneonta and served on the boards of WSKG, the Catskill Symphony Orchestra and Franklin Stage Company. A vigorous advocate of the disenfranchised, and a gracious, altruistic soul, Joann’s life motto was “never resist a generous impulse.” In 2010, she established

Hartwick College’s annual Dr. Arthur E. Rasmussen H ‘95 President’s Lecture in her husband’s memory, aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice. He was a captain of industry and president of Household International Inc. The Rasmussen Atrium in Golisano Hall is named in their honor. Hartwick President Margaret Drugovich memorialized her as “a deeply thoughtful, intelligent, and compassionate woman. She understood the power of leadership, and demonstrated it in her work with organizations and individuals throughout her life. I was always grateful for her generous inquiry – ‘What can I do to help?’ – when-

ever we spoke about Hartwick or about the challenges I faced as a leader. She was a rare and remarkable person.” She is survived by her four children, Mark and Will of London, and Kim and Ann of New York City and Montclair N.J. respectively. Also, six grandchildren; Emma, Mark, Nathan, Leah, Will and Luke. Services will be Sunday, Oct. 26, at The Franklin Stage Company, with reception to follow at Erna McReynold’s and Tom Morgan’s home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to William Ogden Library, 42 Gardiner Place, Walton, NY 13856.
