3) Listen to your customers. Let your customer talk, then suggest how to solve the problem. 4) Deal with complaints. Aim to please one customer at a time. 5) Be helpful – even if there’s no immediate profit in it. Solving customers’ problems will bring them back.
6) Train your staff to be always helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable. 7) Take the extra step. Don’t just say, “It’s in aisle three.” Lead the customer there. 8) Throw in something extra. A coupon for a future discount, additional information on how to use the product, or just a genuine smile.

UNY Oneonta is among the top 100 colleges in the Northeast for the eighth consecutive year, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 ranking of “Best Colleges,” released Tuesday, Sept. 11. And the magazine once again ranked Hartwick College among the first-tier of “Best National Liberal Arts Colleges.”
SUNY Oneonta is 66th in the “Best Regional Universities/North” category, which includes institutions in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and all of New England that offer a full range of undergraduate and
master’s degrees, but few, if any, doctoral programs. Among public institutions in the region, SUNY Oneonta ranks No. 16. Hartwick is ranked 161 among liberal arts colleges overall, up three spots from the 2013 edition.

Good Customer Service Could Be As Simple As Smile, Boden Shows SERVICE/From B1 (and adults, too). He chats with a woman who came in to pay a bill incurred the day before when she was unable to rendezvous with her daughter after school. The anxious mother had called Art, “and I said I’d take care of the kid. It’s my duty, as part of the community, to assist in an emergency.” At Utica native, Art rose to food service director at Utica College before joining Anheuser-Busch, which assigned him to a management job in Baltimore. He returned Upstate at the invitation of restaurateur (and brother-in-law) Joe Vezza, to open the pizzeria at Chestnut and Elm on the Fourth of July, 2009. (Vezza also owns the New York Pizzeria in Richfield Springs and Bocca, the trattoria on Route 28 south.) “We were steamrolled instantly,” Boden said, recalling the opening. “I knew the Hall of Fame, but I didn’t know how big Dreams Park was – we got swallowed up!” Everyone’s noticed Art’s attentiveness. On www.tripadvisor.com, New York Pizzeria has a 4.5 (out of 5) customer-service rating, praising Boden and his staff as “the friendliest I’ve ever met at a pizza place to date,” and “very cheerful.” Locals liked Art’s attitude, too. “They’re overthe-top friendly,” said Bob Faller, who as The Otesaga’s marketing sales director knows customer service. “No matter how busy they are with Dreams Park, they’ll recognize a local and say, ‘I’ll be right with you’.” People often refer customers there, like members of the Wounded Warriors’ baseball team, in town for the Cooperstown Chamber’s golf tournament, who came by for a slice the other afternoon. “Any business in this community has an obligation to welcome tourists and make them feel like they’re at home,” he said. On the rare occasion when he’s not busy behind the counter, Boden will stroll through the dining room, asking every customer how the food is. “When I have a customer who’s not happy, I’m distraught,” he said. “I don’t want anyone to leave here feeling like that.” Vezza embraces customer service, too. If there’s a bad review – of the 94 reviews on www.tripadvisor.com, only two rated the establishment “below average.” Vezza responded with an apology and an offer to make it right the next time they come in. Boden even satisfies the strangest pizza demands. “I had one customer come in and he wanted a pizza with pepperoni, then mushrooms on one side and sausage on

the other, with peppers and onions on half of that side,” he explained. “I had to have him draw it for me, but we made it!” It’s not just the pizza, but that willingness to put the customer first that has kept his pizza place packed with
hungry diners. “It’s about anticipating the needs of a customer,” Faller observed. “It’s about saying, ‘I put extra blue cheese in with your wings,’ because people always ask for extra blue cheese. That customer will never go back to their other
pizza place because they feel like they have friends here. That’s why I go.” Art Boden summed it up: “The rule I live by is to treat people with respect and dignity. For me, it’s a privilege just to stand behind this counter.”
Brooks House Of BBQ, Five Star Subaru In Line For Top Chamber Awards AWARDS/From B1 Otsego County Chamber Executive Director Barbara Ann Heegan gave that assessment in announcing that the two mainstay businesses will be honored at the chamber’s 14th annual Small Business Banquet Thursday, Oct. 17, at The Otesaga. Brooks’ proprietor Ryan Brooks and Five Star’s coowners Ben Guenther and Blaine Jennings were introduced at a press conference Monday, Sept. 9, at Brooks’ on Oneonta’s east end. It was the expansion of Brooks’ bottling plant – it received a $100,000 state grant recently for its expansion – that caught the Chamber’s eye, said Heegan. “When people come to Oneonta, they recognize Brooks’ sauce,” she said. “People are excited about that growth opportunity.” In addition to bottling
their own sauces, Brooks’ Bottling Co. bottles sauces for companies as far away as Phoenix, Ariz., and as local as Bombers Burrito Bar in Albany. “The expansion of this project has reached many markets,” said Heegan. Five Star’s contribution to the success of America in Damaschke Field in August and Bernie Williams at Foothills in July led to its award. “They show their involvement in this community by bringing arts and culture to the forefront,” said Heegan. “America not only brought people from Otsego County, but visitors who then found out that America was playing. They left with a great impression.” “These companies feel strongly about the community,” said Heegan. “And the community recognized them for it.”

He was born in the Fulton County community of Vail Mills, a son of Ralph E. and Nellie C. (Hyde) Vosburgh. He graduated from the high school in neighboring Broadalbin, where his family had moved, and was elected senior class president. In September 1942, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. During the war, he served with the 121st Signal Radio Intelligence Co. in England, France and Belgium. He then served with the Army Security Agency of Europe in Germany. After returning to
Broadalbin, he married the girl next door, Elsie R. Daggett, on Jan. 15, 1949. Donald Two years Vosburgh later, with the help of the G.I.
