She applied for, and received one of the City of Oneonta’s micro-grants, and used the money to start NC Fashion Styling Services at 10 Market St., fulfilling a need for high-end fashion that she saw lacking. “There are so many opportunities at SUNY, but there’s nowhere to practice,” she said. “We needed an avenue here to make it affordable for our community to participate.” She started with consulting services, going to people’s homes and looking through their Jim Kevlin/ OTSEGO.life closets to help them pick out clothes that balance them. Feeling Dowdy Lately? Call Nichole Bainer FASHION/From B1 “I redo their whole wardrobe, she said. “I strip it to the bare bones and help them figure out what they should be wearing for their personal shape and size. For instance, if you’re a medium or extra large, you can’t wear horizontal stripes – I see them everywhere, but they make you look too Ian Austin/ OTESGO.life wide. It’s about balance. Nichole Bainer examines the clothing collection She recently helped dress she’s developing for her fashion consultancy.

Jessica Guenther, winner of the Celebration Creations bridal package, at Rainbow’s End. One of her favorite projects is working as a style consultant for J. Hilburn Men’s Clothier, a European line that specializes in customized, made-to-measure suits, casual wear and tuxedos. “I’m so passionate about it, she said. “It’s the real deal – you personalize collars, cuffs, buttons, monograms. And when it comes in the mail, it fits like a glove. And on Saturday, Sept 1, she launched her newest business, renting party dresses for weddings, parties, dates or “anytime a woman wants to look great.
Members pay a $50 annual fee and receive discounts on the dresses they rent. In addition, Nichole will keep her eye out and shop for her members’ style profiles, making sure that there are plenty of dresses on hand for any of her member’s special occasions. “This week I’ve got birthday parties – one surprise party — a girl going out to dinner with her boyfriend and some going out for First Friday. For example, the “Stella dress, with a strapless gold sequined bustier and a bright orange skirt retails for $58. Members can rent the dress for $9, non-members would pay $12. “Anyone can walk in and use something for the night, she said.
She also headed up a career clothing drive in Cooperstown in July, collecting gently used business attire to donate to area charities and job search organizations. “I’m hoping to take off with some seminars, teach people how to dress for work, she said. Maybe it won’t be Paris or Milan, but ultimately Nichole’s goal is to make Oneonta a place for SUNY fashion grads to stay after they’ve completed their degree. “Going to school for fashion doesn’t mean you have to work in a big city, she added. “You can make those opportunities anywhere. I get to do something I love while staying in a place I love.

Winds Shake Up Canadarago Neighbors WILD/From B1 While Karen drove home from work in Richfield Springs, neighbors began to gather in the driving rain to help minimize the leaks. Jason Seaman, a contractor from up the road, brought over a full-sized tarp, and another neighbor brought a truckload of 2x4s to hold it down. “My first priority was helping them,” said Seamon. “I had 10 guys in the middle of this storm helping me tarp off the roof,” said William. “All of our neighbors came over.” “I’ve never talked to my neighbors, but they were all here,” said Karen. “I was thankful for that.” Across the lake, the Trimbles were vacationing on Cape Cod when they got a call from neighbor Dave Quinton, who said the storm took down a swath of trees. “The wind tossed one tree 360 degrees and dumped it on a wire,” said Rich, a retired Bassett physician. “It took them four hours to cut a path up the driveway.” “Thank goodness for good neighbors,” added Sue.

The storm swept through Cooperstown at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, took down trees and knocked down power lines.
The couple cut their vacation short by a week and came home. One power line was torn down and the electrical box was torn off the side of the house, but the damage to the house itself was minimal. “It stayed low – thank God,” said Susan. Though the National Weather Service out of Binghamton recorded no reports of a tornado, meteorologist Mike Nadolski did say severe weather was caused by a line of thunderstorms

ahead of a cold front moving west to east across the state. Though no one saw a funnel touch down, witnesses compare it to a tornado. “It was like the movie ‘Twister,’” said Seamon. “But without the cow.” “I’ve been in the south when a hurricane hit,” said Griffith. “125 mile per hour winds – this was worse than that.” According to neighbor Don Foster, there have been two confirmed tornados blowing by his house, just up the hill from the Griffiths, in the last three years. “I didn’t know I lived in tornado alley,” he joked. The winds took down four trees on the back end of Foster’s property. “It was headed right for my house,” he said. “It must have made a slight turn. Only one of my fruit trees was bent; I’m either lucky or my house is stronger than I thought.” William says he’ll be wary of weather from now on. “I’m still shaking,” he said. “Every thunderstorm that comes from now on, I’ll be looking at the sky.”
