Bat Company’s Bio-Burner Shows What Sustainable Savvy Firms Might Do BATS/From A1 After two brutally cold winters in their factory in the former Hartwick depot, in 2011 the Haneys installed an LEI Bio-Burner to turn waste materials to warmth. “We were spending $5,000 a winter on propane,” said Tim. “The $10,000 we’ve saved so far has already paid for itself.” “Sometimes it gets too hot; then we just open the doors!” added Connie. The Haneys make 30,000 bats a year, and collect the sawdust year ’round, funneling it through an exhaust system into a silo behind the factory. “We fill that silo four times a year,” Tim said.
said Tim – he is working with LEI to design a system more capable of handling a variety of biomass, from grass pellets to sawdust and wood chips. “There’s so much wasted wood in this community,” he said. “And it’s a very cheap, renewable replacement for oil.” Now, they’re hoping to share their good fortune with the community. Tuesday, Sept. 23, Martha Clarvoe, who chairs the Ian Austin/ OTSEGO.life Town of Hartwick’s ConserThe Bio-Burner’s been a boon to the Haneys, who vation Advisory Committee, covered their investment in two years. organized an open house at “That’s 11 tons each time.” heats their entire factory. the factory for the public to The sawdust, made from And although the combisee the Bio-Burner in acmaple, ash and yellow birch nation isn’t ideal for the tion and discuss Hartwick’s of the custom-designed bats, burner – “it’s a little dry,” recent pledge to join the

state’s Climate Smart Communities, a program sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation. “We’re interested in being more sustainable,” she said. “We wrote a pledge and we signed it.” The pledge includes an energy audit of all town buildings, pumps and vehicles to reduce energy usage. Hartwick joins the Village of Cooperstown and Town of Otsego – they also took the Climate Smart pledge – in seeking sustainable alternatives to oil and other fossil fuels. “We’re looking at all the ways to become more sustainable,” she said. “Whether that’s switching
to compact florescent bulbs, using public transport or building bike paths.” But one of the topics of conversation is possibly using the Cooperstown Bat Co.’s fuel to heat public buildings. “We could make this community self-sufficient,” said Tim. “We are on the cusp of that.” It would require an immense undertaking, Tim said, digging ditches to set up connecting pipes throughout the town, but it’s not an unreachable goal. “Somebody has to start,” he said. “We decided we would step up and make and investment. We’re on the cusp of this.”

to separate out any additional honey. The wax is then sent to a plant where it is cleaned, processed and pressed into blocks, which McCoy sells to sealant, cosmetic and candle makers. Now uncapped, the frames – dripping honey freely – are put into an extractor. “It’s like a Ferris Wheel,” said McCoy. “The extractor spins, and the (formerly Susquehanna Valley Baptist …let Grace reign Church)

honey comes flying out.” Twenty-one frames can fit into the extractor at one time, with each extraction yielding up to 60 pounds of honey. The honey runs down into a sump tank, then is pumped through a filter into a larger bulk tank. From there, 55 gallon drums are filled and the honey is bottled and sold. “When I was in junior high, I did a science fair project on bees,” he said. “I took that project to the Otsego County Fair and won $10, then went down to Montgomery Ward and bought my first hive.” A printer by trade, he has turned an avocation into a business since he retired more than a decade ago. In August, McCoy put up the summer honey, which

comes from wildflowers, strawberries, raspberries
and sweet clover. “You can’t tell the bees to go to just one flower,” he said. “They go wherever they like.” But he admits that this year’s summer yield wasn’t as strong. “You can have the best, healthiest bees, but if the flowers aren’t producing, there’s nothing you can do. Mother Nature is in charge of all that.” He lost a lot of bees in the particularly cold winter, and is concerned about the effect Genetically Modified seeds will have on future yields. “Monsanto has a lot of control over this,” he said. “And it’s not good for the bees – or for us.” But the fall honey harvest has brought bounty. “We average about 10 tons of honey total.” he said.
And if you plan on traveling this fall, McCoy has some advice. “Try some of the honey,” he said. “It’ll have a different flavor only for that area.”

County IDA Embarks On $25-30 Million Plan To Achieve Countywide Broadband In 5 Years FARR/From A1 16th and spent Wednesday meeting with county reps, municipal, school and chamber officials, and regular citizens. “There was nobody saying, ‘Why are you doing this?’ There was unanimous support that you need it and probably needed it 10 years ago,” said Rassmusson, who went into consulting on broadband networks after selling the family telephone business that operated in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. Since winning the IDA contract in August, the
FARR team had compiled Federal Communications Commission, GIS and other data to map out a Rassmusson prospective broad-band system, Rassmusson said. One goal is “running fiber to our Main Streets,” said Mathes, fiber being more dependable and able to transmit larger amounts of data. But points on the FARR map also identified tower sites necessary to
provide “last mile” wireless service to rural areas, Rassmusson said. The Thursday of their visit, Weber and Angerhofer visited the prospective tower sites to ensure no physical objects, distance from roads or other factors would rule out the tower sites. In July 2013, the county IDA had contracted with Comp Direct USA to provide wireless broadband countywide. This year, realizing that fiber would be required, Comp Direct withdrew and the IDA returned $500,000 to Connect NY, the state entity formed
to extend broadband to rural areas. “We’ve been assured (by Connect NY) that our next application will be well received,” said Mathes. “The overall solution is well in excess of $25-30 million. But with a plan, with a strategy, with credibility, the funding agencies will be aggressive.” Since providing broadband to rural areas is “a national priority,” he continued, a range of federal and state funding is available. The IDA will be working with U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, but “we

Speaker: ‘Weaknesses Can Be Made Positives’ Data: More Students Transported To Fox JESSE/From A1 Saperstein, an autism activist and author of “Atypical: Life With Aspbergers in 20 1/3 Chapters,” was the featured speaker Saturday, Sept. 21, to cap off Springbrook’s Family Weekend. “We were in the same class from middle school up through graduation,” said Turner. “He has always been a generous, nice guy.” They reconnected when Turner was working at the Anderson Center for Autism in Hyde Park, and when the Golisano School opened at Springbrook, Turner knew his friend would be a dynamic speaker. “We have a lot of workshops for parents about dealing with the difficulties of transitioning from the school to adulthood,” said Kira DeLanoy, Springbrook
spokesperson. “And that’s the focus of his latest book.” “Getting a Life With Aspberger’s: Lessons Learned on the Bumpy Road to Adulthood,” was published in August. “This one has fewer fart jokes than the last one,” he joked. “My editor told me to have fun, and I might have taken her advice a little too far.” Saperstein wrote the books as part of what he calls “our collective quest to understand autism.” “Oftentimes, it’s more of a character trait than a disability,” he said. “The true disablers are the unnecessary failures created by a society that doesn’t understand.” One of his current undertakings is to mentor and raise awareness about bullying. “We must work hard to
AllOTSEGO.opportunities
fight bullying, but we must also equip our young adults to deal with the dark arts of humanity,” he said. “Poison ivy isn’t everywhere, but there’s enough of it to make life miserable.” And he would know about poison ivy – in 2005, he hiked all 2,174 miles of the Appalachian Trail to raise money for the Joey DiPaolo AIDS Foundation. “I was able to complete that journey because of qualities that were vilified,” he said. In 2012, he went skydiving in a “Free Fall to End Bullying,” and speaks at schools across the state about his experiences. “Michael did really well at Center Street School, but when he got to middle school, there were some problems,” said Travisano. “But the kids from Center Street stepped up and they wouldn’t let anyone bully him.” Michael graduated from Hartwick College this spring with a major in Art History. “What we see as our own weaknesses can be made into positives,” said DeLanoy. “That’s something everyone can take away in their own lives.”

DATA/From A1 They’re all false alarms.” One fire did break out at SUNY Oneonta after some garbage thrown in a wall sconce ignited, but maintenance had the fire under control when the fire department arrived on scene. In all, the fire department and EMS logged 72 calls in all categories – transports to Fox and to Bassett, calls that did not result in transports, fire alarms and the one actual fire – up from 26 in 2013. Maloney said he now expects that to tail off: “It’s cyclical. We get a lot of calls in the beginning of September, and by late October, November, those calls fall off.” In neighborhoods students walk through to get back to campus, the Oneonta Police Department has also seen an increase and pattern to the arrests and citations. To date, the Oneonta Police Department has sent 64 referrals to SUNY Oneonta in their ongoing effort to increase communication between city police and campus security. In the first month of school in 2013, 58 such referrals were made, and in 2012, 67.
“The numbers are all in the same neighborhood,” said Brenner – he characterized them as “quality of life violations,” noise complaints, open container and littering. “But we’ve got a little more honest reporting between us and the colleges. We’re not hiding anything.” The majority of the violations are related to the rise in house parties, Brenner continued. “They’re going from location to location with an open container, they’re in a group, talking loudly, and then they throw their garbage,” he explained. “We’re trying to get more guys into the neighborhood on bikes, walking through, or just driving, getting more cars to be seen. Hopefully, kids will think twice before doing something they’re not supposed to be doing.” Overall, however, Brenner reported that the incidents of violence are down. “Last year, there was more fighting,” he said. “But we’ve had enough.” And though the arrest numbers are up, Brenner admitted, he doesn’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. “We’re asking citizens to give us a call,” he said. “It’s a Catch-22.”

raising the colleges’ concerned response to student rowdiness, Mayor Dick Miller came out of the stormy Common Council meeting Tuesday, Sept. 16, with a clear idea of City Hall’s role. “The city’s principal role in this is in enforcing the
law,” said Miller in an interview, adding, “I think we can prepare our neighborhoods and we can enforce the law, and that’s what we’re going to do.” With that in mind, the mayor met in recent days with City Judge Lucy Bernier, prosecutor Mike

CGP Compiles 50 Years Of Oral Histories Invasive Jellyfish Found In Glimmerglass CGP/From A1 since the CGP opened in 1964 – the 50th anniversary will be celebrated the weekend of Oct. 10-12 by, among others, prominent alumni from across the country – and is now gathered as CGP’s Community Stories. “It’s a communitybased project to capture the whole community,” he said. “Doctors, lawyers, farmers, teachers – the list is quite diverse.” First-year students select an interview subject from suggestions Walker collects through a network of former subjects and interested parties. “It’s very organic,” he said. Students also have a chance to reflect on previous interviews. In the 1970s, a group collected recipes from Utica’s Italian and Polish communities. “One
of my students recently went back and found family members of those original interviews,” said Walker. “Some of them had moved away, but they still gathered at a church and made those same recipes 30 years later. She brought back the most delicious pierogies I’ve ever had.” Other students went back and interviewed ice fishermen on Otsego Lake, just as students before them had done. “It’s interesting to hear what students recorded 30 years ago and now.” The Ingalls family in Hartwick has also been the subject of interviews over the decades, tracing their history from a dairy farm to a roadside farm stand and u-pick on Blueberry Hill. Former student Henry Glassie, now a “legend” in Folklore studies and a pro-
AllOTSEGO.opportunities
fessor at Indiana University, did his oral history on Jesse Wells, a hop picker just as the crop was beginning to decline in the early 20th century. “He was also a musician, so Henry recorded all these songs,” said Walker. “He took these stunning photographs and pasted them on loose-leaf paper in his report.” The original document is now fragile with age, but photocopies have been made and scanned for preservation. The interviews themselves, from reel-to-reel tape to mp3, are also logged, and many are available for listening on the Community Stories website. CGP’s founder, the late Louis C. Jones, even told his tales of collecting stories in one student-conducted interview. “Some of those recorders weighed 50, 75 pounds and had to be plugged in – I’ve carried them up mountains, only to find there were no plugs!” And as the fall semester begins, students are already starting to pick their subjects and practice their interviewing techniques. “So much history is not preserved in the written record,” said Walker. “The only way to capture this history is by talking to people.”
