In Search For Answer, Bubble-Gum Collection Grew To 900 Items By LIBBY CUDMORE ONEONTA

F

or Grace Smith, gum isn’t just a way to blow a bubble or freshen breath – it’s a deeper question: “Why? “What person, what company got a pitch to make parkingticket bubble gum? she asked. “And then a bunch of guys in suits said yes! She has those bubble-gum parking tickets – as well as bubble-gum checks, badges, records and cassette tapes, gum in toilet-shaped containers and green gum you had to pick out of a plastic nostril. In all, the collection contains more than 900 items. They used to be displayed the Walnut Street Bed & Breakfast, when Grace and her husband Duncan ran it. She bought her first piece in 1974 in Nashville, Tenn., while out on a walk with her brother. “We stopped in a 7-Eleven and there was a pack of gum that looked exactly like miniature tacos, she said. “They had tiny shredded lettuce, meat and cheese. And I just thought, ‘Who made this? Who decided this?’ And I bought it for 49 cents. She started looking for gum and found it everywhere. “It was heyday of gum, up through the ’80s, she said. “There were tons of different kinds and shapes – animals, food, sports, ones that were disgusting flavors. “I have the entire history of music and technology. I have gum that comes packaged in computers, beepers, cell phones. She even has some not meant for humans. “Duncan found a bubble-gum flavored Please See GUM, B3

Prepare For Invasion Of The Invasives, Municipalities, Homeowners Advised INVASIVES/From B1 -ists and homeowners turned out at Fox Care in Oneonta to hear Professor Mark Whitmore of Cornell’s College of Agricultural & Life Science discuss the threat. “People are concerned about the impending ash borer presence on their property,” said Cox. Oneonta City Engineer Jim Hawver is leading the charge against the invasion. The city is currently preparing a request for proposals for an arborist to come in and inventory the ash trees. According to the Dec. 2011 survey, of the 1,028 trees on Oneonta streets, 36 are ash. “We don’t have 100 percent of the trees in the park inventoried,” said Hawver. “That will be part of this project.” The arborist will then come up with a plan for treating – or taking down – each individual tree, should the ash borer burrow in.

“There is a whole spectrum of measures we can take,” said Hawver. “From chemical treatments to removing the trees.” “It’s a proactive stance,” said Cox. “We’re showing

our municipalities various approaches for how they can ease the pain of tree removal, cleanup and treatment measures.” Chemical treatments are expensive, warned Smyers.

“If you have a prize tree in a landscape, you can use chemical controls,” he said. “But it’s not practical to treat all the city’s trees.” And although the Asian Longhorn Beetle hasn’t

arrived yet, Smyers says it’s only a matter of time before it begins attacking maple trees. “The maples are an important part of our region,” he said. “This could be devastation — not

just the landscape, but for the maple sugar and syrup production.” “Once they get a foothold, they’re almost impossible to eradicate,” he added.

Sean Eldridge’s Announcement For Congress Should Shine Spotlight On County ELDRIDGE/From A1 Cooperstown, as Eldridge’s Sunday, Sept. 22, announcement had him harkening back to the weekend before. At the party’s annual Jedediah Peck Dinner at the Country Inn & Suites on Saturday, Sept. 14, “Sean had everybody cheering, yelling,” said Abbate. We were all taken aback: He’s an incredible young man.” Vince Casale, who was only appointed county Republican chair Thursday, Sept. 19, a few days before the Eldridge announcement, came out swinging. “People are going to find they are fortunate to have a congressman who shares our values, like Chris Gibson,” said Casale. “They aren’t going to trade him for a

carpetbagging, unabashed liberal who is clearly out of touch with the people of this county.” Eldridge, who as spouse of Facebook founder Chris Hughes has access to a huge fortune – he has already spent $215,000 on his campaign, the Times Union reported – announced his campaign by posting a three-minute video on his website. “I love the Hudson Valley, it’s where I’m building my family, my home and my business,” said the candidate, who – the New York Times reported in July – recently moved from a $5 million estate in Garrison to a $2 million modern home overlooking Ashokan Reservoir. Garrison, in Putnam County, which is in Democrat Sean Patrick

Maloney’s 18th Congressional District, “appeared unattainable,” the Times reported. The 19th is represented by a secondterm former Army colonel, but Gibson is still a first-termer Eldridge to much of his district, which was reconfigured after the 2010 Census. “This comes as no surprise,” said Gibson’s press secretary, Stephanie Valley. Eldridge “purchased a multimillion dollar home in our district in January, filed to run for Congress in February, and then cleared up his voter registration problems a few months later.

National Union Rep Joins Oneonta Commemoration RAIL/From A1 Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen as a means of insurance and protection against a job that paid 12 cents an hour and killed over 10,000 of them a year. “Workers had very little input in 1883,” explained James Stem, the national legislative director of the United Transportation Union in Washington D.C., who was in Oneonta for the occasion. “If you stood up and said, ‘I want to talk to management, I just saw my friend get killed,’ you’d be out of job. If you rented a place, your landlord would kick you out. You were blacklisted in the community. These eight brave men were not just putting their jobs on the line, they were putting out their lives.” Local railroad historian

Jim Loudon, author of “The Oneonta Roundhouse” and other local history books, led the tour to several railroad sites, including the Colliersville leg of the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley railroad, where trains carrying hops out and cotton in for the Phoenix Mills textile mills could connect with the Albany & Susquehanna line. The war over the railroad line, which saw Judge Edwin Harris trying to connect the tracks to the Ulster-Delaware line, tore Cooperstown apart. “It was like the Civil War,” said Loudon. “It was neighbor against neighbor for almost 10 years.” At the former D&H passenger station, now Ristorante Stella Luna, gardeners used to tend flower beds and hand out corsages to

“He’s been raising money from wealthy friends while at the same time touting an economic plan that boils down to loaning his potential constituents money. One thing is clear - this race will test the hypothesis of whether Congressional seats can be bought,” she said. In his video, Eldridge calls himself “an independent voice” who is pro-environment, an ally of Planned Parenthood and will seek “to eradicate the influence of money and special interests in politics.” Raised in Ohio, he said his father was the first family member to graduate from high school, and his mother was from a “working class family.” The video cites Eldridge’s Hudson River Ventures as an effort “to grow small businesses throughout

ladies getting off the train. “There was a train schedule inside the corsage, so there was a method to their madness,” said Loudon. At its peak, the D&H employed 1,500 people locally and ran 30 tracks through the city. Stores on Main Street stayed open late on Thursday, when the D&E employees got paid. And while it is unknown if the Red Caboose in Neahwa Park is the actual caboose where the eight men met in secret, Mayor Dick Miller offered this proclamation. “It can’t be proven that this isn’t the caboose, so as far as I’m concerned, as mayor, this is it.” And while Cooperstown has baseball, Oneonta has its trains. “Oneonta will always be Railtown, USA,” said Loudon.

our region.” It contains supportive quotes from Laura Pensiero, who Ventures helped expand her Gigi Hudson Valley, and Larry Gotleib of the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp., who praised Eldridge’s efforts in creating the Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center at New Paltz. Abbate said he will ask his committee to “take a good look” at Eldridge soon, even though it’s early. The two had an initial dinner meeting at The Hawkeye Grill in July, when Eldridge was setting the stage for his announcement. Casale said since Otsego County is now wholly contained in one Congressional district he anticipates it will play “a very important role” in the upcoming fight. “We’re ready to support Chris today,” he said.

A mechanic by trade and a hunter, Brownell said he began planting pumpkins in the woods to attract deer. He picked up a book on pumpkin-growing, happened on a chapter about growing giant ones, and was hooked. Sandy Houck of Mount Vision won $200 for the largest Otsego County pumpkin, 1,079 pounds. Szarpa was grateful for a record 34 sponsors, which, along with entry fees, underwrite the event. “We had a long list of entries for giant pumpkins, squash, long gourds, large tomatoes,” she said.

OBITUARIES

Ferdinand ‘Ferd’ Thering, 86; Hartwick Town Leader For Decades HARTWICK – Ferdinand S. Thering, who served as Town of Hartwick Planning Board chair and town assessor for decades, passed away Sept. 21, 2013, in the family homestead at Rolling Acres Farm on Thering Road. Ferd, as he was known by just about everyone, was 86. Born Feb. 12, 1927, in Schenevus, he was a son of Henry and Clara (Gartung) Thering. In his youth he attended a parochial school in New York City and lived for a time in his father’s native Germany. In 1941, Ferd’s father purchased what became Rolling Acres Farm in the Town of Hartwick. After moving with his family to the farm, Ferd attended Hartwick High School and graduated with the Class of 1944. A basketball player during his school years, he was known to finish up chores on the farm and then run from there to the school to play ball with his friends and schoolmates. On June 14, 1952, Ferd married the former Marjorie Bachanas in a ceremony at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Catholic Church in Cooperstown, where Father Patrick J. Whelan was the presiding pastor. Ferd and Marge then lived on and worked the family farm, which later earned the distinction of being a 50year Dairylea Cooperative Family Farm. For many years, Ferd was also an active member of the Farm Bureau. Ferd truly loved Hartwick, and for many years served his community well in several capacities. For over three decades he

served as chairman of the Town Planning Board, and was the sole assessor for the Town of Hartwick, a role he filled especially well. In 1973, Ferd became a state-certified assessor, and served at various times as the tax assessor for the towns of Hartwick, Pittsfield and Otsego, as well as for the Village of Cooperstown. In 1983 he obtained status as a professional assessor, and in 1987 was granted the designation of Stated Certified Assessor Professional by the State of New York State Board of Equalization and Assessment. In 1992, Ferd was the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation Award from the Otsego County Assessors’ Association - which he served as president of for twenty years - the text of which best sums up his loyalty to the profession: For twenty years, Ferd sat on the board of the Otsego Rural Housing Association, during which time he rarely missed a meeting. In his spare time, he was an avid bowler, playing with leagues in Cooperstown and Milford. An active Rotarian, Ferd joined the Cooperstown Rotary Club in May 1982. A Paul Harris Fellow, he held a perfect attendance record

Ferdinand Thering

for 30 years until his failing health and inability to attend meetings compelled the club to make him an Honorary Member just this past year. Ferd is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marjorie, of Hartwick; their three children, Henry J. Thering of Hartwick, Betty Staffin and her husband, Mike, of Fly Creek, and Tim Thering of Jupiter, Florida; four grandchildren, Jacob Staffin and his fiancé, Ashley Davidson, John Thering and his wife, Stacie, Noah Thering, and Autumn Thering; five great grandchildren, Violet, Josephine, Alexander, Camron, and Xavier; one sister, Margaret Balli and her husband, Eddie, of West Virginia; one brother, Henry

p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. A graveside service will be offered at the Hartwick Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care. Arrangements are entrusted to Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home.
