Joel Paradis, a tinsmith and antique lighting expert from Westmoreland, near Utica, relights Hyde Hall’s once-futuristic vapor-light burners for the first time in 142 years. It happened at dusk Saturday, Sept. 22, during the annual National Conference on Historic Lighting at the National Historic Landmark on Otsego Lake. In top left photo, Paradis and Jeremiah Rusconi, a craftsman from Hudson, prepared to reattach the chandelier to Hyde Hall’s diningroom ceiling the day before.

Or how, one time, my mother was so homeHall of Fame sick that they drove President Jane home, had breakfast Forbes Clark at my grandmother’s welcomes “the kitchen table, then girls” back. drove back and confessed to their chaperone what they’d done.” Twenty years after “A League of Their Own” brought nationwide recognition to the All American Girls Professional Please See LEAGUE, B3

or the first time in 142 years, Hyde Hall is filled with light from once-futuristic chandeliers. “It’s a dramatic moment,” said Jon Maney, executive director at the National Historic Landmark. “They were last hung in 1870. You’ll never see anything like this again.” The chandeliers were lit at dusk Saturday, Sept. 22, during the annual National Conference of Historical Lighting, and attendees toasted the occasion with champagne and sat down to dinner in an atmosphere that harkened back to the mansion’s 19th century heyday. Adding to the light were silver candelabra from Merchant-Ivory films, courtesy of Jeremiah Rusconi, a craftsman from Hudson who was also a set

Vapor-Light Chandeliers Shine Again For First Time In 142 Years

FIXTURE/From B1 lit with a match, can burn for up to six hours. “The wick doesn’t burn,” Maney explained. “Just the vapor creates a really bright light.” Present while the chandeliers were being reinstalled the day before the dinner, Gib Vincent of Cooperstown, board chairman, said Hyde Hall may be the only house in the U.S. with vapor-light chandeliers in their original settings. “Lighting went through extraordinary changes from the 1780s to the 1870s,” he said. “Vapor light was the second, after gas lighting, in 1820.” The chandeliers, which
Vincent believes were English made, originally cost $300 each, a considerable sum two centuries ago. “They have a dark, heavy look that coordinates with the fireplace,” he said. “They’re brass, colored to look like bronze, with a gilt finish. The diningroom was the men’s room, and the color difference evokes that.” George Clarke, grandson of the last British colonial governor of New York and the mansion’s builder, was a technology buff, experimenting with light, heating systems and such novelties as the first water closet west of Albany. No longer used for lighting, the chandeliers continued to
hang in the diningroom until 1907, when they were put in storage. The metal oxidized, parts got damaged or went missing. It then fell to Joel Paradis of Westmoreland, near Utica, a tinsmith and expert on Colonial lighting, to restore the fixture to their original glory. “He’s been involved with lighting restoration for 20 years,” said Maney. “He can make period lamps from scratch, but his specialty is restoration.” Maney held up an original lamp piece and a reproduction. “They’re the exact weight, type and thickness,” he said. “The only difference is his tiny initials, so his work won’t
be misinterpreted as antique. It’s the ethical thing to do.” The restoration was a yearlong project underwritten by Douglas Kent, Hyde Hall buff and longtime caretaker who got the honor of lighting one of the globes at Saturday’s dinner. “He saved these,” said Maney. “We hung one up before restoration and he saw it, which inspired him to underwrite the project.” “It’s a resurrection story,” he continued. “There are so many chapters in the story of this house, and the light makes it seem alive. It’s our mission to bring this house to life, and light is the spark that brings it to life for the public.”

THURSDAY-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27-28, 2012
‘Girls’ League Vets Return To Cooperstown LEAGUE/From B1 Baseball League, the former players – all wearing reunion shirts emblazoned with the film’s most famous line, “There’s No Crying in Baseball!” – gathered Friday, Sept. 21, on the steps of the Baseball Hall of Fame to sing the AAGPBL theme song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and “God Bless America” to gathered crowds. The Hall of Fame, as it happens, is where it all began, with “Women in Baseball,” which opened on Nov. 5, 1988, and turned out to be groundbreaking. Movie director Penny Marshall came to see it, and the rest is history. “There was a ripple effect,” said Ted Spencer, retired Hall curator who put together that exhibit. “The
movie generated a lot more interested in women’s sports across board.” And so to today. “It was so bittersweet,” said Laura as she snapped pictures. “I haven’t seen those gals in so long – I’ve known these women all my life.” Audrey Daniels, a pitcher for the Minneapolis Millerettes, the Fort Wayne Daisies and the Rockford Peaches – the team portrayed in “A League” – says the girls were constantly rotated to different teams. “They didn’t want any one team winning it all,” she explained. Audrey has been at every reunion, including the last Hall of Fame tour, in 1988. She carried a stack of her baseball cards with her, and happily autographed them
for anyone who sat and chatted with her. Lois Youngen, president of the AAGPBL board, arrived at the reunion with a broken arm. “I tell everyone it’s from sliding into home,” she joked. “Truth is, I did it out in the garden.” The ladies milled about the Diamond Dreams exhibit, reminiscing, posing for photos with families and fans. “I donated my mom’s uniform, her glove and a scrapbook a fan made for her,” said Laura. Rita, who passed away in 1992, nine days after “A League of Their Own” premiered, was in the final scene, shot at the “Diamond Dreams” exhibit at the Hall of Fame. “Her storyline follows the Geena Davis character’s
storyline,” said Laura. “She was scouted, like Jon Lovitz did in the movie, while she was working as a delivery girl for a dry cleaners. She was 18, and she played on their softball team.” Rita’s boyfriend, who she would later marry, was in the Army, and her father was raising his family on $3 a day. “She went to go play ball and made $75 a week,” said Laura. “At the end of her career, she was making $125 a week.” Rita taught her family – and the neighborhood kids — to play. “We kept a box of gloves on our back porch,” said her daughter. “If we were playing catch in the yard, the other kids would come over, get a glove and join in.” Baseball stayed in the family. After visiting Cooperstown for the film shoot, Laura eventually decided to
AllOTSEGO.dining&entertainment
return and to stay. “I knew as soon as I set foot in Cooperstown, I wanted to live here,” she said. In the summer, she manages a B&B on Pine Boulevard where many Dreams Park families stay, helping other families live their dream of playing on the Cooperstown fields. “I try to come to all the reunions,” she said.

Sadly, Rita knows this will most likely be the last time she sees many of these players, who are in their 70s and 80s. “I talk to a lot of the daughters,” she said. “We’ve agreed to keep our own thing going.” But while they’re still here, she’s going to go where they go: “I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
