MASTERS
OF THE LODGE Lodge Trustee Dominick Reisen holds up two of the 50 framed photographs of masters of the Cooperstown Lodge and other eminent local Masons recently discovered in a crawl space above the organization’s third floor at 77 Main St.; the one at right is of William Brooks, dated 1891. As visible in top photo, the portraits are in various states of repair.

50 Mystifying Portraits Discovered In Crawl Space At Cooperstown Lodge By LIBBY CUDMORE COOPERSTOWN
T
WEEKEND’S
here are some secrets even the Masons don’t know. In December, Ron Sarles, a trustee of
Otsego Lodge 138, Free & Accepted Masons, climbed a steep staircase at 77 Main St. to the attic crawlspace to begin a roofing and insulation project. Tucked in the back he found 50 stacked photographic portraits in round frames. “At first we were baffled, said local historian Dominick Reisen, a member of the lodge who was called upon to help sort out the mystery.
“Some of them are past masters, but not all of them. If they weren’t masters, why were they so painstakingly framed? The lodge was founded in 1795; its first master was Elihu Phinney, publisher of the Otsego Herald. A later master was Ambrose Jordan, Edward Clark’s father-in-law, so the lodge has been linked to local personalities for 228 years. Please See MASONS, B3

Professor’s Research Shows Gibson Girls Once Common Here FASHION/From B1 the-20th-century drawings by Charles Dana Gibson, epitomized the illustrator’s ideals of femine beauty. The style featured highboned collar, full bosom – often aided by a corset with ruffles underneath – and a flat-front, trumpetshaped skirt. The fashion quickly spread in popularity, even as far as Australia, Eluwawalage’s homeland. “When I saw that dress, I was mesmerized,” Demi said. “It’s amazing how they wore similar clothes.” Effa’s second dress, a two-piece silk and lace wedding dress, was worn in 1890 and features the same Gibson Girl style. “It’s all handmade,” said the professor. The original article, which appeared in 2011 in Hometown Oneonta, reported on Human Ecology secretary Robin Sostrack donating an 1880s purple bustle dress that belonged to the great aunt of a family friend, Shirley Skinner of Troy. “She was very wealthy,” said Eluwawalage. “She employed seamstresses and dressmakers, and even brought in visiting dressmakers!” More recently, Demi has also received two nightIan Austin/ OTSEGO.life gowns from Sandy HagProfessor Eluwawalage unpacks one of Bertha gerty, worn by her great-

grandmother, Winifred Perry Lohanas of Utica, around the same period. “These were probably her weddingnight nightgowns,” said Eluwawalage. “That’s why they were kept longer.” The first gown is “very 1890s,” when pin-tucks and handmade eyelet laces were
popular. “A lot of people were using eyelet,” she said. The nightgowns are both cotton, one with mother-ofpearl buttons, one with ivory buttons. In addition to the donations, Eluwawalage’s research into Gibson Girl costumes landed her a guest curator position at Lorenzo, the historic mansion in Cazenovia. “We’re creating five generations of Lorenzo women who lived there,” she said. “In that household, when you looked at the portraits on the wall, there were hardly any men in the pictures – only women!” Her research is also helping the costume makers there recreate clothes worn by the servants, maids and visitors. “As a historian, we contribute to society by telling these people’s stories,” she said. “It’s hard work, but it’s rewarding.” “The families are proud of these,” she said. “I’m so privileged that they trust me with these.”

50 Oval Portraits Present Mystery For Cooperstown Masons MASONS/From B1 Some of the discovered portraits, like that of Seth Doubleday Jr., cousin of Abner Doubleday and a master, are easy to connect to Cooperstown families. Others, like David Temple, required more research: “What I want to find out is what they did that was deemed worthy of having their images photographed and framed,” then an expensive undertaking, said Reisen, author of “Middlefield and the Settling of the New York Frontier” (Images of America, 2009). Some of the frames are broken, while others are in pristine condition, once the pidgeon droppings and dust are cleaned off. Masons Keith Dickinson and Mark MacLeod are cleaning the frames and the glass, and recording any writings on the backs of the frames. “The fact that they’re all uniformly framed tells me they were done at the same
was purchased in 1920, and Reisen surmised the images may have been stored in the crawl space during renovations, “much the same way people put away a photo album and forget to look at it again. “I can imagine them thinking, ‘It’s glass, it’s paper, it’s wood, it will be fine’,” he said. “As the generation that put these in storage died off, they were forgotten. Now, no one’s alive to remember who put the pictures up there.” The Cooperstown Masons are meticulous record keepIan Austin/ OTSEGO.life ers, and the answer may lie in the drawers in the former Reisen holds the largest portrait found amid the “smoking room,” now the smaller round-framed portraits recovered from library. “There’s stuff in the crawl space. Another record turned up a member who lived in 1860 and listed his occupation as photographer. “It’s another link in this historic survey,” he said. “Maybe he was involved with this project.” This is not the Cooperstown lodge’s first of such find. In the early ‘90s, three oil-on-canvas “teaching carpets,” painted in 1857 by a Professor Hillis of Albany, were found in a back closet. “There’s no record in Masonry of any paintings of this sort,” said Reisen. “No one has ever seen anything like this before.” The teaching carpets were just that: rugs embroidered with Masonic teaching symbols, rolled up and carried to secret meetings during the 1830s, when the suspicious disappearance of William Morgan of Batavia, who threatened to write an expose on the organization, caused an anti-Mason backlash across Upstate

New York. The rumor was Morgan had been thrown into Niagara Falls, but no body was ever recovered and no one every convicted. “It was a period of darkness and turmoil” for the organization, Reisen said. Before teaching carpets, Masonic teachings were handed down verbally. “Now we use PowerPoint,” he said, grinning. “We’ve really moved into the 21st century!” The three carpets now hang in the grand hall, but where should the newly discovered portraits by hung? “They’re too beautiful, too historically significant to be hidden away,” Reisen said. “And then, voila! They come back to life.”
