War Punctuated Groves Family’s History In Otego

HISTORIAN/From B1 of history down to her children. Every year for Christmas, gives her four children a family artifact. “She tells us the story to go with it,” said son Joseph, holding up his great-uncle Merritt Melvin Secor’s Civil War cornet. “We have Civil War soldiers on both sides of the family.” All her great-uncles fought in the Civil War, and two died in prison camps;

one in Donaldsonville, La., the other in Titusville, Pa. Her father, the youngest of 13, was too young to go to war, and she has many of their letters sent home to him from the battlefield. “My siblings and I used to play dress-up in their old Civil War uniforms,” Helen said. “I remember wearing the hat. But they were moth-eaten, and my father couldn’t figure out a reason to keep them around, so he

burned them.” Her late husband Robert’s brother, Perry Groves, fought in World War II and was one of only two Otsego County soldiers to receive a Silver Star. “He was nearly cut in half by machine gun fire at the Battle of the Bulge,” Joseph said. “They reported him dead a few weeks before he came home.” “He lived to be 78,” Helen added.

For her, one of the most interesting discoveries was that Paderewski, the famous violinist (and, later, prime minister of Poland,) once stayed overnight in one of Otego’s many lodging houses. “There were many hotels because there were still traveling salesmen,” she said. “The turnpike was still in use into the 1900s, and we have his autograph on a guest list from the Brethel House. I called Rene Prins

and he said that it was very likely he was on a U.S. Tour at the time.” He might have even played at the Opera House, which burned in 1930, where the village offices now stand. Many of the hotels are gone now, but one of Helen and her son’s favorite stories is of T.A. Huntsman, who owned the Susquehanna Hotel, where the elementary school is now. “He had flowers out front, which was unusual for a commercial business, and apparently, the

town didn’t like that,” she said. “He swore he’d never come back to Otego, got as far as Unadilla, and died,” Joseph added in, grinning. “They brought him back here to bury him.” “He never wanted to see Otego again, and, well, I guess he didn’t,” Helen said. But for all the paperwork, the photographs and the changing landscape, Helen still feels at home in Otego. “I don’t think that much has changed,” she mused.

He continued, “I look back. Sometimes it was a rough place to live. In early history, Oneonta was a village, and people would come in to do their shopping and socialize. And there would be trouble.” Reflecting on the recent conflict between city police and carousing students, Simonson reflected, “really, not that much has changed. That’s why Oneonta was called Klubnocki. People would come to town and get in fights here. “It’s a nice town, but it’s had its tough times, with the railroad workers, and the Please See ALUMNUS, B3

ment of a Railroad Town.” “I was fascinated by things I’d never known growing up here.” When Mark’s brother died and his parents began to fail, Simonson shifted back to the American Heart Association in Binghamton. After the triple blow of mortality struck, Simonson found himself back in Oneonta, reflecting on how to spend the rest of his life. “When I was here taking care of family matters, I found the people to be wonderful,” he said. Through his parents’ illnesses, he’d also experienced hospice, and he joined Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, a “fabulous organization.” “City historian – that was totally accidental,” he recalled. He’d heard former mayor Sam Nader was resigning from the job, and he called City Hall: “What’s the city historian job all about?” Send in your resume, he was told. At the time, he was doing marketing for the West Kortright Center, and former mayor Jim Lettis attended one of the performances. “Mark, I’ve heard you’re city historian,” Lettis told the surprised Simonson. Then-mayor Kim Muller had made the appointment. When Simonson was a boy, City Historian Edwin Moore loomed large through his weekly newspaper column, In Old Oneonta, eventually collected in four anthologies. So Mark began writing a history column in 1999, going to twice a week in 2002. It’s still going strong after 13 years. “I find new things every week, all the time, when I’m looking at old microfilms, old newspapers in the region,” he said. “It’s a constant discovery.”

night: WZFL in Chicago, WKBW in Buffalo, Atlanta, Denver. And he was determined to get into that field. He spent two years studying broadcast management at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, then received a bachelor’s in business administration from SUNY Oswego before joining WMRY and WENE in Endicott, serving Greater Binghamton. Enticed from programming to news, he switched to WCHM and WKXZ in Norwich as news director, then had the chance to return to the Endicott stations in that role. In particular, he remembers covering repeated confrontations between Randall Terry of the antiabortion Operation Rescue and Mario Cuomo, when the then-governor would visit the Southern Tier. In the early 1990s, with satellite formats and automation sweeping the local radio business, Simonson saw the handwriting on the wall and shifted to nonprofit management, first with the March of Dimes in Binghamton, then with the Multiple Sclerosis Association in Waltham, Mass., outside Boston. Moving away confirmed his affection for Central New York, but happenstance also helped point him in the direction of things to come. In a suburban Boston bookstore, he ran across a copy of Eugene Milener’s “Oneonta: The Develop-

ALUMNUS/From B1 To Beaver” era. “When we were growing up, there were several guys my age in the neighborhood,” he remembered. “We were always outside, at Wilber Park. We’d play baseball until it was dark, when our parents would call us in.” With kids glued to their iPods, “I don’t see that nowadays.” But, also, “it’s a scheduled world; in part, it’s a safety thing.” While you may think of Oneonta as a Yankee town, “the ’69 Mets were big. We had imaginations. We all dreamed of doing the same thing some day. I didn’t become a strong Mets fan, but I still like to root for them then they’re doing well.” For his part, young Mark, while a pupil at Center Street School, was an allor-nothing ballplayer: “I’d either really hit the ball, or I’d strike out.” He graduated from OHS in 1976 with such classmates as today’s OHS athletic director, Joe Hughes, Oneonta’s “new Mr. Baseball,” NBC executive Mark Jeffers and Bill Colone, who with Jeffers is on the Alumni Association’s Wall of Distinction. Bill Decker, another classmate, is a topnotch cook at Brooks’ BBQ. As so many boys did in those days, the young Mark would listen to the transistor radio as he fell asleep at night, tuning into the big AM stations of the day – the signal traveled farther at

Simonson ‘Amazed’ At Leadership That Keeps Alumni Association Enthusiasm High ALUMNUS/From B1 college students. You think about the war protests of 1971-72. 1922, the railroad strikers. The railroad company locked them out; they brought in substitute workers. There was fighting then.

“There was the fighting, but it was also a very productive town, a place to grow up and raise a family. Sherman Fairchild, the Bundys” – the IBM originators – “it was a well-to-do community.” Simonson began focusing

in 2001 on the then-fledging OHS Alumni Association, which had been modeled after successful entities in Sidney and Afton. Bud Pirone, his social-studies teacher and future principal, was elected president, and was surrounded by such

local lights at Geoff Smith, Medical Coaches president; retired OHS football coach and athletic director Tony Drago, and Madolyn O. Palmer, then recently retired city schools business manager (and now a Common Council member.) He thought to himself, “this is kind of neat. My first recollection was a football game. Afterwards, there was a barbecue at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club field. It was a pretty good turnout. It occurred to me, this is a pretty good organization.” Simonson was asked

to join the board, and he did. While never taking a leadership position, “I’ve been amazed by the past presidents and the current president,” Carla Balnis, Palmer’s daughter. Carla succeeded Mike Maben, whose dad, Charles, was Simonson’s 10th-grade biology teacher. Katherine Dailey, former Soccer Hall of Fame spokesperson, now with Cleinman Performance Partners, served a term. For the past several years, as photographer at the association’s Wall of Distinction and Sports Hall of Fame Induction, Simonson was

impressed by the inductees. “They always reflect good education, good upbringing and the quality of life growing up in Oneonta – and they go on and do good things.” This Saturday, he will be taking photos again – “although I’ll be taking the stage and talking for a while.”

Honoree Praises Volunteers, Leaders To the Editor: It’s indeed a privilege to accept the 2012 Community Service Award presented by the CooperLETTER stown Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting Monday, Oct. 1. The occasion, at Brewery Ommegang, was festive, electrified and full of dedicated community members.

The award goes back to 1969 and there have been 18 recipients. While I received the most recent award, it’s accepted on behalf of everyone who supported the nomination and contributed, over the years, in the spirit of volunteerism to this wonderful community. This has been a time of reflection for me. A look at the past recipients who

earned the distinction of true community leaders and how they have made a positive difference in the way we live and thrive in Cooperstown is most impressive. Their legacy lives on and still inspire and impacts us in many positive ways. It’s also a time to look ahead as key leadership in business enterprise, within organizations and individually, is so crucial in this sometimes complicated environment. Teamed with this, and equally necessary, is the commitment to volunteerism: It has never gone out of style, and we all qualify. Giving of oneself through sharing of talents and time is essential and this community is a dynamic example. Thank you to the chamber

Cross, 101 Main Street, Cooperstown NY 13326. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and said “come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched as slowly you passed away. Though we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. Many times we’ve needed you, many times we’ve cried if love could have saved you, you never would have died.

Forever in our Hearts. Debbie & Mark, Jessica & Frank, Lisa & Rob
