Constance Laymon Turned Misfortune Into Achievement CONSTANCE/From B1 she was prone to bladder infections. I had to put her catheter in – no mother should ever have to do that for her child.” While recovering in the ICU at Bassett, CCS then-principal Barry Gold organized a graduation ceremony for her. “The kids all came into her room, each with a rose,” said Moya. “And she got her diploma.” After a stay at Bassett Hospital, she transferred to Sunnyview Rehabilita-
tion Center, Schenectady, where she learned to care for herself. She came home on weekends and eventually moved in with her mother, but she became depressed. “She wouldn’t use her wheelchair or transfer herself,” Moya said. “I told her, ‘I can’t handle you,’ and I sent her back to Sunnyview.” Then one day, things came together for Constance. “She said, ‘Mom, I’m going to get an education. I’m not going to be on
welfare my whole life’.” She enrolled at SUNY Albany, majoring in English, and often wrote about feeling trapped in her body. She went on to get a master’s, also in English, and taught remedial writing as an adjunct professor. Life continued to look up. She was a bridesmaid in her brother Benjamin’s wedding and, without children of her own, she “took over” her nieces. A Utica news channel did a piece where she demonstrated how to use guide dogs. She lobbied and protested for the rights of the disabled, even in D.C., at one point chaining herself to a stairwell. “She lived and breathed CDC,” said Elizabeth Martin, Chief Operating Officer. “Everything she did was about that program. If she was in the hospital, she’d have meetings at the hospital.” But despite her newfound corporate success, the former bad girl wasn’t ready to go goody-goody just yet. “She was known for her mouth,” Moya said. “...But she could also be a lady – she adjusted to the level she needed to for her clients.” “She got down and dirty,” said Veronica Bowie, her executive assistant, whose met Constance when her grandmother was in the program. “She spit on people who parked their cars in handicapped spaces when they weren’t handicapped.” She showed off her many Date Place Time tattoos, plenty of silver 10/15 Hampton Inn of Oneonta 10:00 am jewelry, wore jeans to work and kept a sign in her office 10/22 Best Western Plus Cooperstown Inn 2:00 pm that read, “I’m Too Sexy For 10/29 Hampton Inn of Oneonta 10:00 am a Nursing Home.” “She was truly someone you only had to meet once,” said Carol Durante, program associate for CDC. “You Call remembered her forever.” TTY: 1-800-662-1220 Though funeral services were Saturday, Sept 29 at Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm Eastern Time the New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home in Colonie, a Visit joinMVPmedicare.com local memorial service will be held in the spring, when MVP’s Medicare Customer Care Center: her ashes are interred. “She loved Cooper1-800-665-7924, 8 am – 8 pm, 7 days a week stown,” said her mother. “She always wanted to The annual election period for MVP Health Care know what was happening here.
