Shot, Stabbed, Brother’s Helper Finds Peace In Worcester Pulpit PRIEST/From B1 once with a shotgun into his bulletproof vest, and once by a fellow officer who didn’t unload his gun before playing quick-draw in the locker room. “I was a good cop, he said. “I was awarded a Medal of Valor. But I was running away from my true vocation. He attended mass regularly, serving as an usher, and there he most felt at peace. “I didn’t like going into work, he said. “And those thoughts of the priesthood came back. Researching his family history, he found his family had always had at least one priest per generation. After reading about the Maryknolls, the Catholic order of

I thought, ‘These are my kind of people’. He was soon on a mission to Africa, where he helped support ministries in Tanzania and Kenya. “We would go to these rural ministries and build a chapel, then plant pineapple and cash crops to sell to the tourist hotels on the coast. At one point, he secured 60 hectares (148 acres) of land solely for growing pineapples, which helped Ian Austin/ OTSEGO.life support the trade and seamFather Green in the stress schools he set up for nave of St. Joseph’s local children. working as the chaplain – and later as assistant director of pastoral care – at the Cardinal Cooke Heath Center in East Harlem. “They asked me three times to become the director, but I turned them down, he said. “It’s all meetings and paperwork, and that was not what I was called to do. The 800-bed nursing home was also home to 200 AIDS patients at the height of the AIDS crisis, where Green saw 8-15 patients die a week. Also in his care were 100 developmentally disabled children, half of them from Willowbrook, the state school closed in 1987 after an outcry over
Sisters Keep Disappearing Tradition Alive, While Paying Homage To Civil War Dead QUILTS/From B1 aid societies, Sunday schools and quilting groups were called upon to make quilts for soldiers on the battlefield and in hospitals. The most popular were the 4- by 7-foot nine patch with the quilter’s signature in the middle, solicited by the U.S. Sanitary Commission. “I made 18 of those for friends, family and fundraisers, she said. “I just love making nine-patch quilts! Because the quilts were well-used and soldiers were often buried with the quilts they received, only 17 such quilts of the quarter-million made are still known to exist. But one was made for James George, a soldier from Cherry Valley. It now hangs in the New England Quilt Museum. Ellsworth is currently working on a reproduction of that quilt, and her sister is adding him to her storyboard of soldiers for presentations in Fly Creek and Exeter historical societies, and the Abner Doubleday Civil War Roundtable.
She was also inspired by their family history. The sisters’ great-grandfather, John McTessney, fought in the 152nd New York Infantry Regiment, recruited in Otsego County, and she made a quilt in his memory for their cousin Lynn. All of the cousins signed Lynn’s quilt. That quilt was in the style of the Fairbanks quilt, and in her collection is another like it, modeled directly on the one Carolyn Fairbanks made her husband Luke, who fought with a Vermont infantry. The quilt has several Bible verses, including the 10 Commandments, written onto the patches. The quilts are made from vintage-reproduction fabrics in Ellsworth’s collection, and sewn by hand. “I make them smaller so I won’t be overwhelmed and not get them finished, said Hazelton. “But on the back, I always write down the original size. Also in the display was an American flag quilt, styled on one made by the
Ladies’ Industrial Union in Lawrence, Mass., in 1863. Though pictures and patterns exist of the original, the quilt itself has been lost. “No one seems to know where it is, she said. “But making the reproduction took me a long, long time! And though her Civil War quilting has been set aside to get started on her Christmas quilts, she’s looking forward to picking it back up again for the winter. “We want to add to our collection, she said.

I want us all to be together. Though his farming days are over, he does still do chaplain work at Fox and Bassett hospitals, and makes sure to get out into the community to meet both parishioners and neighbors. “If you stay in the parish compound and wait for people to come to you, you’re going to be very lonely, he said.

PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit
organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-877-BANKNYS (1-877226-5697) or the Foreclosure Relief Hotline 1-800269-0990 or visit the department’s website at WWW. DFS.NY.GOV. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. §1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who has filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. Fran finally retired for good in her late seventies and divided her time with her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law Bill Pickens in Morris, and her son, Larry, his wife, Stacy and grandsons, Cameron and Matthew in Clermont, Fla. On special occasions she would travel to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to see her granddaughter, Kimberly, her husband, Dean Cole and great-grandchildren Amanda and Jack. Her grandson, Steven Salisbury, his wife Sonya and great-granddaughters Olivia and Abigail made frequent visits from Grafton, Mass., and made her 95th birthday extra special. We were all together for Christmas 2013. Also surviving Fran is a special niece, Anne Warren, and her family in Oneonta. Her nephew, Robert Cleaveland, predeceased her. Fran’s friendly nature and easy compatibility made her a success in life. Her great apple pie was enjoyed by many and she was always ready for a game of “pitch” – these attributes helped make her house a home. A memorial service is planned at noon Monday, Nov. 24, at the West Winfield Federated Church. Arrangements are with the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, West Winfield, NY. For online expression of sympathy go to www. dfwefh.com In lieu of flowers, please donate to Federated Church, 452 East Main St., West Winfield, NY 13491. Arrangements are entrusted to Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Homes.

Crowell: Much Of $5 Million Spoken For, But $1 Million May Remain For Tax Relief CROWELL/From A1 for parttimers, $500 for fulltimers, to stay through the sale to a private company, Focus Ventures, which took over Thursday, Oct. 16. Fulltimers had vacation time coming anyhow, but also get personal and sick days for sticking it out. Then there are “legacy costs” – the county is required to pay health insurance for retirees, an estimated $1.2 million in 2015, Crowell said. That, however, will phase out as retirees pass away or reach 65 and are eligible for Medicare. Plus, Workers’ Comp claims are in the $800,000 range, although that will likewise phase out, he added. That brings the savings down to about $2 million next year. Under the $5 million annual burden Otsego Manor was costing the county – while the total budget is $110 million, the tax levy, which had to cover the Manor deficit, is only $11 million – routine maintenance was deferred. The roof on the Meadows Office Building needs replacing, the county Sheriff’s Department needs new vehicles and road repair has been delayed. That still may leave $1 million and – while reluctant to preempt county Rep. Don Lindberg, R-Worcester, who chairs the county
Board’s budget committee – Crowell said reps may have the opportunity to distribute as much as $1 million in tax relief. “I’m trying to be conservative here,” he said. “This is uncharted territory. We don’t want to be overly ambitious.” While a $1 million tax cut, on average, would only amount to about $40 per tax parcel, Crowell said achieving that would send the right message. “It’s a reflection of overall performance,” he said. Also on the positive side, the price Focus paid for the Manor should be sufficient to pay off the $18 million in bonds still outstanding on the facility. In the interview, Crowell also discussed additional trends, mostly positive: • The dismantling of MOSA, the three-county trash processing authority, resulted in an $800,000 onetime payment to the county. Right now, it appears that money will be used to build towers and complete the long-awaited upgrade in the emergency telecommunications system. • The county was spending an estimated $150,000200,000 for economic development, and closing the Economic Development Office and declining to participate in the IDA’s “single point of contact” strategy will save some of that.
• Privatizing the county Tourism Office into the Destination Marketing Corp. of Otsego County and its “heads in beds” strategy, along with a better Hall of Fame Induction and stronger enforcement of bed-tax collections, should see increased revenues there as well. • Those factors may also contribute to an estimated $850,000 increase in sales tax revenues. (However, Crowell said that last year the upward trend in the first three quarters was erased by a leap in Internet Christmas shopping, so he’s waiting and seeing.) All that said, the county’s total assessed valuation is “essentially flat,” Crowell said. In 2013, it was $3.97 billion. And it rose to $4.1 billion in 2014. However, once the state equalization rate was applied – the computation that ensures apples are being compared to apples – the valuation dropped, from $4.61 billion in 2013 to $4.596 billion in 2014. While Ioxus in West Oneonta, Brewery Ommegang’s expansion, Tasi Karabinis’ Southside strip mall, and the Panera building on Southside Mall added to total assessment, dropping property values overall erased that increase, Crowell said.
