The other day at Cooperstown Distillery, the first such enterprise in Otsego County, the burning question was: How many times should The Marra’s son, Gabe, 13, you distill suggested the vodka? As Mondiamond that decorates the tell Marra base of Abner reports the Doubleday debate, “Doubleplay” husband flasks. (and coproprietor) Gene had one idea. Distiller & Compliance Director Bobby Finan had another. She had a third. So experimentation (accompanied by sips) ensued. Three? Too little. Nine? Too much. The answer? A trade secret, said Montell. THURSDAY-FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24-25, 2013

County’s First Micro-Distillery Launched In Cooperstown MARRAS/From B1 successful restaurateur; she, a marketer and designer whose interest in botany resulted in a successful 10-year landscaping enterprise – from the Melon Ranch Vineyard in Commerce, Ga., in 1992, to 11 Railroad Ave. in Baseball Town, U.S.A. For Gene, a Bronx boy, it’s been something of a full circle, starting in 1971, when Gene followed his high school pal George Felton, basketball star and later standout coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks, to the University of Georgia. At the last minute, Felton decided to play college ball elsewhere. Gene was on his own, but soon got over the disappointment. In Athens, he found, “the women are beautiful, the campus is beautiful, the people are great.” Thus began a love affair that lasted a quarter century. During college, the future distiller was “always working in restaurants,” including opening the first Blimpie’s south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Graduating in 1975, he attended the Culinary Institute of America, worked with the Levy Restaurants in Chicago, but soon was back in Atlanta. At 25, he opened Marra’s Seafood Grill, featuring fresh fish and an extensive wine list, which took the city by storm. He was soon involved in other projects, BBQ, a deli, a brick-oven pizza restaurant. In 1992, he and Montell met when he began developing the Melon Ranch winery, the first in Georgia to successfully grow French varietals – viognier

was a particular hit. With the 1996 Olympics en route to Atlanta, Gene sold his enterprises at the top of the market. But he couldn’t stay out of the business, and soon had opened three more restaurants, including the Bavarian Alpine Village in Helen, Ga., five miles from the Appalachian Trail terminus at Springer Mountain. At the dawn of the 21st century, the couple – now with two children, Clara and Gabriel – found themselves in Boca Grande, Fla. Montell was running the landscaping firm; Gene, the Palmetto Grill. Through their children’s school, the Marras met Michael and Cory Moffat, restaurateurs in Cooperstown who winter there. In 2008, when Michael was looking for advice on his Blue Mingo’s future, Gene spent the summer here as a consulting chef. Introduced the Cooperstown, he also became familiar with New York State’s fledgling distillery industry. He visited Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner, the first micro-distillery in the state, and soon was taking distilling courses at Cornell, Chicago and Florida. “By the end of ‘09, I was really smitten with it,” he said. In 2010, he began the process of selling the Palmetto Grill in a down economy. In 2012, he began collaborating with a high school pal in the liquor business in New York. “From that point on,” he said. “There was no turning back.” He arrived in Cooperstown earlier this summer, bought the former Ag-

way storage building at Railroad and Leatherstocking from Mike Manno and – with Mayor Jeff Katz aiming to make this project a model for business development – quickly moved through the approval process. Renovations began, the Cadillac-level CARL still was installed and – with the state license in hand earlier this month and state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, at his side – the ribbon was cut on the new enterprise. “This is the most fun I’ve had since the vineyard,” said Montell, who arrived with the kids, now 13 and 12, in late August, in time to enroll them in CCS. In the past three weeks, local business has been steady. And orders – some big ones, as corporations begin to put together Christmas gift baskets – are steady. As much as the family was drawn to Cooperstown’s beauty, Gene is excited about the “Cooperstown brand,” one he believes will demonstrate international reach. The Marras have started with Glimmerglass Vodka ($35), Fenimore Gin ($40) and Beanball Bourbon ($45). But they are preparing to launch the “Doubleplay” series in a baseball-shaped decanter; at Gabe’s suggestion, the parents added a baseball diamond on the base. The first out will be Abner Doubleday “Doubleplay” Vodka, followed by the “Doubleplay” Bourbon. “It’s our goal to be on every shelf in America,” said Gene, “which I think we can do.”

Children’s Book Series Connects Oneontan With Stars BOOK/From B1 The 2002 OHS grad and son of Alfresco’s owners Elizabeth and Jerry Webster went on to Syracuse University for mechanical engineering, but some friends in the illustration department saw those notebooks and encouraged him to attend one of their classes. “I learned more in that five-hour class than I did in an entire year in engineering.” He spent the summer “filling as many sketchbooks as I could,” and transferred his major to illustration, graduating in 2006. After an introduction from a friend, he began working with Sebastian Jones, president of Stranger Comics in Los Angeles, on the comic “Dusu: Path of the Ancient.” But when Jones met “NYPD Blue” actress Garcelle

Beauvais at a party, she expressed interest in working on a children’s book. Jones brought the idea back to Webster. “I’ve always wanted to work on a children’s book,” he said. “I want to give back with art.” Working alongside his fiancée, Adrienne Sagastiano, they illustrated Beauvais’ “poetic prose” and produced the book, “I Am Mixed,” which follows the story of twins Jay and Nia, who, born of mixed-race parents, look nothing alike, but learn to enjoy their combined heritage. “America isn’t that 1950s, Mom, Dad, two kids, picket-fence style anymore,” he said. “It’s getting a real response from kids who see that they’re normal too.” Halle Berry wrote the introduction, and the book launched in early August at Books and Cookies in Santa

Monica, with a reading by Beauvais and attendance by several celebrities, including Laurence Fishburne. “There I was, with people I never thought I’d meet.” He’s turning “I Am” into a series, with the second book, working title “I Am Living In Two Homes,” deals with divorce. “I want kids to know that just because their mom and their dad split up doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them or they love you any less,” he said. “It helps educate children in a helpful, hopeful way.” The book is planned for an early spring 2014 release. And back on the other side of the spectrum, the fourth book in the “Dusu” series is due out in November. “It’s all surreal,” he said. “But I’m really proud of the result.”
