HOMETOWN ONEONTA B-5
Rowley Has Prepared For Town Board Responsibilities To the Editor: I am a candidate for the Oneonta Town Board because I believe all citizens have an obligation to serve the community they live in. Additionally, I have many years of leadership experience in municipal governance that could be most assistive to the town board. I have no doubt that my opponent shares my passion for civic responsibility and that she has a genuine desire to serve. However, she has yet to explain her qualifications for the position. I have clearly detailed my expertise in municipal finance, grant writing, large scale commercial construction, labor relations, health insurance administration and interaction with state and federal agencies. My career as an assistant superintendent at Sullivan
West CSD and as a superintendent at Edmeston CSD, Oneonta CSD and Stamford CSD is a matter of public record. Exactly what are my opponent’s career accomplishments and/or experience in any form of municipal governance? My opponent rarely misses an opportunity to expound on her environmental activism. I believe she is sincere in her beliefs. I commend her for her generosity in the establishment of the Riddell State Park. I have hiked there and it is truly a gift that will keep on giving. However, I am also an ardent conservationist. In 1972-73, while working on my MPA at Penn State, I focused a great deal of my research on environmental issues. More particularly, I looked at the environmental
degradation that resulted from the traditional view that air and water were free goods to be utilized – at will - by industries and private citizens alike. I also investigated the hypothesis that capital investment in the prevention of environmental pollution is less costly then mitigation of the environmental damage. My early interest in environmentalism did not dissipate and it is why I am a longtime contributor to and supporter of The Nature Conservancy, The National Audubon Society and several other conservation organizations. Our decision to install a solar tacking system at our home fulfills our desire to do more to reduce our own carbon foot print. My conservation convictions are genuine and they existed prior to my participation in
the first Earth Day - April 22, 1970. Unfortunately, my support for conservationism does little to address other quality of life issues in the Town of Oneonta. Increasing taxes, the lack of job and career opportunities for all age groups, child poverty levels well above the state average, the cost of infrastructure repairs and maintenance, the burden of state
2009, when they sold it to Fred DeJoseph and Tom DeMulder. But running the Cooperstown All-Star Village has been keeping them busy in recent years, including a visit from Little League superstar Mo’ne Davis earlier this summer. “As much as we love the restaurants, it’s time to move on, put our focus on the baseball camp, he said. In the off-season, Patton has been traveling back and forth to China several times a year in hopes of bringing baseball to the country. “They play it in Japan and Korea, so we’re working with the government to try and bring baseball to the Chinese people. But it takes a lot of time. But even with Sabatini’s

Eldridge Will Help U.S. Move Forward To the Editor: Voting for Sean Eldridge for Congress next Tuesday, Nov. 4, will help move our region and the U.S. in a sensible direction. Eldridge wants to expand early childhood education, increase funding for our public schools, and make college more affordable. A college education is increasingly available only to those whose parents are wealthy. Chris Gibson has voted to continue this disastrous trend by cutting funding for Head Start and Pell grants. He also voted against consideration of the Student Loan Relief Act. Eldridge is in favor of raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Even though a large majority of the country, both Democrats and Republicans, are in favor of raising the minimum wage to at least $10.10 an hour, Gibson voted against that raise. He hedges by saying he is in favor of raising the minimum wage, but that $10.10 is “too much. Too much for whom? Certainly not for many local workers who struggle to make ends meet. Eldridge opposes cuts to Medicare and Social Security and believes we must maintain a safety net for our seniors.
Gibson voted twice for budgets that would reduce benefits and cut funding for these vital programs. Eldridge will support a constitutional amendment that will allow Congress to limit campaign spending. Gibson has voted against consideration of such an amendment. Eldridge supports ensuring women and their doctors can make decisions on reproductive issues, without government interference. Gibson has voted to defund family planning organizations and to restrict a woman’s right to choose. He also voted to block the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would guarantee equal pay for equal work for women. As a result of the Republican and Tea Party mindless obsession with cutting budgets, as well as their constant obstructionism, our infrastructure is crumbling, our public education system has deteriorated shockingly, and the gap between the top 0.1 percent and the middle class is the worst it has been since the 1920s. Our country needs to move forward. Sean Eldridge is the candidate who will help us do this. MELINDA HARDIN Cooperstown

Gibson Has Served Nation, District To the Editor, I write this letter in the strong support of Chris Gibson and also in an effort to correct the many unjustified criticisms of this candidate. In various letters he has been labeled a “loyal follower of the Republican congressional machine. In fact the Washington Post (February 2014), a rather reputable source, rated him the second most independent Republican in Congress! One local author accused him of “parlaying his military career for “political gain. Let’s get real.
