satellite classroom for facilities management,” he said. “It’s nice for them to get off campus.” It’s a two-phase project they hope will be complete by spring 2014. In the summer, Finn and Ed May, another volunteer, approached

Kuhn with the idea of having the students help rebuild the fledging airport. “Ed saw a presentation we did and he had no idea we were so involved in the community,” said Kuhn. “I’m a pilot, so I’m excited about airports, and it was a match. It’s a

“They’re a big asset,” added Finn. “They’re the biggest help we’ve had so far.” Kuhn also hopes that the national Job Corps office will allow the local school to add an airport facilities management program to the trade offerings. “It’s a pretty

valuable trade,” he said. The airport will also keep a student on hand to do maintenance around the airport, such as changing light bulbs on the runway. “It’s not just a temporary project,” said Kuhn. After the classroom space is completed, the students will move into the terminal. “It hasn’t been updated since 1966, when it was built,” said Finn. In addition to new windows and masonry, the students will also build three displays, one for Hartwick, one for SUNY and one for Job Corps. “When people come fly Oneonta, they’re usually headed elsewhere,” he said. “We want to give them a reason to stay and see what’s in town.” Currently, the pilot’s room is a standing desk with a computer, and the vending room is a coffee pot. “We’re

going to do a real gut renovation,” said Finn. “We have shower facilities for pilots, but you wouldn’t want to use them. Sometimes they’re here six, eight, 10 hours or overnight, so they want to shower, shave and look presentable. We want to give them the faculties they need.” They’ll also be making a two-story office for Dan Bentley, the aircraft mechanic, and building a conference room to increase the airport’s usage even if the meeting is held on the ground. It’s a project that’s earned them a lot of what Kuhn calls “institutional esteem,” and he’s hoping to take that into the city. “We’re looking at getting some of the condemned houses and fixing them up one at a time,” he said. “We’re here to help improve Oneonta. If it wasn’t for this airport project, we wouldn’t have thought to do that. It’s real world training.” “We want the city to know the airport is here,” said Finn. “We’re working for their benefit.”

Film Festival Launched In Cooperstown FILM FEST/From B1 directors. It’s how film was meant to be seen.” The festival will feature eight films with local and environmental themes, including “Microcosmos,” the colorized, Blu-Ray edition of John Ford’s Academy Award nominated “Drums Along the Mohawk,” with Henry Ford and Claudette Colbert, and anti-fracking “Drill Baby Drill” by Utica native Lech Kowalski. “It’s a nice latitude,” said Pope. “There’s short films, documentaries, films for kids and families.” Said Parsons, “The environmental focus is critical to Cooperstown. But it’s not just about films and issues, it’s also a social time.” The festival will also feature two live events; a brunch discussion on “Cooper on Film: The Three Faces of Hawkeye,” with Peter Rutkoff, a Kenyon College professor who summers locally, and nine short films from the Black Maria Film Festival in Jersey City, plus a local food buffet and drink specials. “Founder John Columbus travels with this (the Black Maria) festival, and now we’re part of it,” said Pope. Though there is no official cinema in Cooperstown, Parsons says that it’s all part of a growing trend. “People set up ‘microcinemas,’ a temporary screening facility in a church or a community center,” she explained. “They can talk and interact with a cinema gathering in a nontraditional venue. You don’t have to have a movie theater to have a public event.” In addition, there are four free outdoor events scheduled as part of the festival, including a 20-mile bike ride around Otsego Lake, a tour of Doubleday Field to discuss the new pesticidefree management plan, a bird hike and a walk up James Fenimore Cooper’s Mount Ovis. “This is going to be an annual event that includes more than just films, but a celebration of the environment by getting out in the environment,” said Pope. Tickets and the schedule are available online at www. glimmerglassfilmdays.com, or by stopping in to the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a good thing,” said Katz. “It’s exactly what we want in the shoulder season. It hits on all the good points of Cooperstown.”
