Morris Woman Was CBS Researcher By TERESA WINCHESTER MORRIS
I In this famed TV image, CBS anchor Walter Cronkite teared up on announcing the news that John F. Kennedy had died.
t was around 1:20 Eastern Standard Time, Nov. 22, 1963. Felice Marlier, who now lives in Morris, was in the elevator of CBS, 485 Madison Ave., New York City. At 24, she was a CBS Special Projects television researcher. She was leaving early that day to spend a week at her parents’ home in Stone Ridge, in
Ulster County. Suddenly, an announcement came over the loudspeaker ordering all CBS news staff to report immediately to their desks. “What’s going on?” she asked others Marlier in the elevator. No one had the answer because such a thing had never happened before. At her desk, she was informed that Please See JFK, B2

Oneonta and Cooperstown’s farmers’ markets are fonts of inspiration for Thanksgiving dinner planners. Ilyssa Berg, left, of Painted Goat Farm, Garrattsville, suggests a baked cheese treat; Larry Roseboom, center, Breezy Maple Farm, Westford, loves sweet potatoes with maple syrup, and Patrick Henneberry, Berry Brook Farm, Hamden, is partial to turnips and sharp radishes.

here’s nothing as inviting as the smell of a roasting turkey, the soft orange of squash in candlelight or the taste of sugar and cinnamon in a still-warm apple pie. But you don’t have to spend the day in an over-lit grocery aisle fighting for the last frozen pumpkin pie, nor do you have to be confined to the same tired menu. Both Oneonta and the Cooperstown Farmers’ Markets offer Thanksgiving staples and a little taste of something different for the holiday. “You have to be a little organized and

order in advance, but you can make a Thanksgiving dinner with what’s at our farmer’s markets,” said Dana LaCroix, Oneonta Farmers’ Market manager.
Ilyssa Berg of Painted Goat Farm, Garrattsville, offers up her recipe for an unusual appetizer. “You brush the cheese with egg wash and bread crumbs, then bake it. The outside gets totally crusty and inside is warm and gooey. You can serve it with cranberries, apples and pears — anything sweet and savory.” The cheese also goes well on a salad with greens from Patrick Henneberry of Berry Brook Farm, Hamden. “We have salad turnips, which you use like radishes,” he said. “But they have a sweet flavor, not that sharpness like radishes do. You can use them in a salad or a soup.” At Hare & Feather Farm, Laurens, Valerie Adams had some fresh ideas for Please See SAMPLER, B3

JFK Was Shot, And Morris Woman Immersed Herself In Research For Cronkite JFK/From B1 President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. Her assignment was to gather information about all U.S. presidents who had been assassinated, on whom assassinations had been attempted, or who had died in office. Though she and her colleagues were in shock, they were still propelled as professionals to carry out the task at hand. As she recalled, only one person actually began to cry. “Everyone was running around getting information to take to (Walter) Cronkite on various topics,” she said. Today, it’s hard for us to imagine doing research without using computer search engines, but Marlier had to do it the old-fashioned way, combing through magazines and newspapers in the CBS library. When she handed Cronkite her first batch of information, official word of Kennedy’s death had not yet been received.
“Mr. Cronkite appeared upset but in control,” she said. This assessment coincides with the footage, now imprinted on so many of our minds, of the moment Cronkite announced that the young and vigorous president had died at 1 p.m. Central Time. In the 1960s, as today, newsrooms wrote obituaries for famous people ahead of time, but the CBS staff was told to research anything that might be of human interest. Marlier conducted research not only on President Kennedy, but also on his wife Jacqueline, newly sworn-in President Lyndon Baines Johnson and accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Marlier worked through the night, periodically delivering information, sometimes hand-written, to Cronkite. She never felt tired, perhaps because she had managed to catch three or four hours of sleep on the couch in the ladies’ lounge. Because she had her suitcase with
her when the announcement had been made to return to her desk, she was at least able to change clothes. “That was the beginning of 24hour news coverage,” she said. Even in that intense atmosphere, people were already speculating about an involvement in the assassination that went beyond Lee Harvey Oswald, who had been arrested in a Dallas movie theatre by local police shortly after the assassination. Given that the workplace in question was the CBS newsroom, daily in touch with Capitol Hill goingson, it is not surprising that speculation abounded. “Some people in the newsroom thought Lyndon Johnson was behind it because of that Life magazine article,” she said. She was referring to a Life piece due out Nov. 24, 1963, that would have revealed damning information about Johnson and Bobby Baker, his former political advisor who had been the subject of a September 1963 Senate
Rules Committee investigation for congressional bribery. Had the article gone forward, it may have put an end to Johnson’s political career. Not even 24 hours after the momentous event, her co-workers were also speculating on complicity from Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, Russia, the FBI, and the CIA. And already people were questioning the number and origin of shots fired. “People thought one of the shots had come from the grassy knoll,” she said. “We’ll all be dead before people find out the truth,” one of her colleagues commented. On Saturday night, nearly 36 hours after her scheduled departure from the building, she was allowed to go home. At work on Sunday morning, she was the only one on duty. Frank Gifford, former professional football player and CBS sportscaster, appeared in Special Projects to do research for a sports
broadcast. He had a cup of coffee for himself, and one for Marlier. While he was there, she continued to watch the monitor and answer the phone. With Gifford, she witnessed Jack Ruby shoot Oswald on camera. Several moments later, she answered the phone to find Dan Rather on the other end asking for information on Jack Ruby. She assured him she would check but suggested it might be more feasible to get that information in Dallas. He swore at her. In preparation for President Kennedy’s funeral, held on Monday, Nov. 25, Marlier intensely researched past presidential funerals. She went home at 8 p.m. that night. On Tuesday, much follow-up work had to be done. On Wednesday, Nov. 27, around noon, she once again entered the elevator, headed for Port Authority and upstate New York. The clothes in her suitcase were different. And so was the world.

Farmers Recipes Enticing
SAMPLER/From B1 stuffing. “It would be amazing to use the sweet chicken sausage in stuffing,” she said. “It already has all the Italian spices.” And why choose between stuffing or potatoes? “You have to have mashed potatoes,” said Debbie Heller, holding up a pile of Heller’s Farm gold potatoes in Bainbridge. “But my family always has creamed onions – you slice sweet onions and sauté them in butter, then mix them into a white sauce. My father’s family has been serving it for 200 years.” And when it comes to squash, Adams says that Breezy Maple Farms maple syrup is a great substitute in the ubiquitous sweet potato casserole. “It’s a much richer flavor than Karo syrup,” she said. But the real centerpiece of any Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey. Hare & Feather will have turkey breasts at the Oneonta Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Nov. 23, and Denise and Tom Warren of Stone & Thistle Farm, East Meredith, offer a “Work for Your Turkey” program. “At $4.50 a pound, they get expensive quickly,” said Denise. “It’s a way to make them affordable to everybody and gives them an opportunity to understand that this is a live bird. Meat just doesn’t come in a Styrofoam pack from the supermarket.” Workers catch, slaughter and eviscerate their turkeys, with everyone doing every job. “It’s cleaner and it’s more humane,” she said. “They’re not transported, so there’s less stress.” All 171 turkeys are spoken for this year, but Denise begins taking orders on Columbus Day for next year’s feast. It isn’t Thanksgiving without a plethora of desserts, and Middlefield Orchard has everything but the crust for your favorite pies. “Cortlands and Braestar apples combined make excellent pies,” said Willis Bruneau. “And we’ve got pumpkins for pies.” But for those without time for baking, Joan Bruneau bakes pies, as does the Taste of Britain, with a full array of tarts, scones and fruitcakes. Leslie Berliant of Le Marais Chocolat, Sharon Springs, also makes decadent desserts, including truffles and French macaroons. “They’re a meringue and nut flour pastry with pumpkin butter or chocolate filling,” she said. Serve with Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, available exclusively from Lynn Deichman at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market. And when there’s leftovers the next morning, a Thanksgiving sandwich, made by Heather Pikul of You’re So Sweet in Oneonta. “Everybody loves the peasant bread,” she said. “But if you’re really stuffed, maybe you want some granola!”
